I've been trying to find out if I can get some help in getting my daughter to the JR A&E to be checked out for damage to her back...she is still in great pain and can only lie on her front and has great difficulty in moving at all....

She's only been seen very briefly by a doctor who did actually visit and gave her Tramadol injection and Tramadol tablets, which don't seem to be doing very much
Now she's told me she has a bad bruise on her back which wasn't seen by the doctor, probably not visible at the time...I haven't seen this...
I would take her in the car tomorrow, but I don't think she can get in!

I've rung available numbers and the best offer is a return call from NHS direct - in four hours time!

I'm so glad your DD has had some relief and you can now try and get over the trumatic time you have had,it may take a while for a more marked improvement as it took nearly 6 weeks for the pain I had in my back to ease a few months ago but as long as I kept the medication topped up and rested as much as possible it did ease off,my doctor sent me for x-rays etc and found no major problem.Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Thanks for messages, all.

Just spoken to J and she is feeling better - but I had to tell her firmly that she couldn't work on Friday!!!! If she doesn't get this through her head she will cripple herself..........
My sister, thank goodness, is going to help her out a bit financially..........

Looks like a happy outcome? I hope so!

It's not done yet.....has been bearable in the day, but her back was agony in the night last night. She's tried to get a duty doctor but hasn't managed to get through all day..........has given up for now but will phone GP in the morning if it is worse again......

Rotten for her, alie. Has she been given a diagnosis yet, or is it just vague? I do hope she gets better soon. I know how awful it can be. x

Now waiting to hear from J who said the doctor was ringing her at 12.

Thing is, this is so bad that she is scared that it is more than a trapped nerve.

A trapped nerve can be really, really bad, AlieOxon. OH had one in his back a few years ago and was in excrutiating pain. He had to be given pethidine in the end just to help him sleep!

Allie she has had an X ray and nothing is broken is it. Backpain can be excruciating but is not necessarily a sign of damage.
Has her GP got an arrangement with either an osteopath or a chiropractor ? as they have far more training in backs than either physios or GPs do and may be able to relieve her pain. Some GPs do.

AlieOxon Wed 06-Jun-12 13:39:53

Yes Jess the doctor said it again re the Xray (I already had) - she seems to have been encouraging, and has told J to try and move around....she's trying!

Will check re osteo or chiro...Chiro helped me, I remember, a while ago when I had sciatica.
I'm going over to Oxford tomorrow, I think.

Moving around does help, even if it's crawling on hands and knees (yes, I've been reduced to that) or bent over with two walking sticks (been there too). I hope your daughter feels a steady and gradual improvement, alie flowers Has there been any improvement so far?

Thanks folks for responses....I think I will be able to tell better when I have seen her.
I got a microwaveable bag, as she says warmth helps.

Hello Alie, hope things are settling down a bit for you. Just thought I'd add my comments as I've had 3 major slipped disc incidents since my late teens and have survived.
The pain is awefull and you do get to the point where you just dont know what to do with yourself.........and yet........you do get through it in the end. Bags, I too have done the ole crawling on hands and knees bit too! I think a lot of the problem is that you get so tense and resentful that you are not helping yourself. You must keep up the painkillers so that you can stay as mobile as possible. Its all to easy to find a position where it does not hurt quite so much and make the mistake of staying put, not good.

My last episode was in Oxforshire and my GP referred me to a specialist back clinic that allowed me to have a lovely long consultation with a specialist who really help put things into perspective. When things have settled down get your daughter to find a gentle yoga class that deals with back injuries..it can be very helpful because it helps you to boost your core strength AND learn a few relaxation methods.
All the best to you both.

Sorry I haven't been here!
I had a hectic day in Oxford on Thursday and just about knocked myself out doing shopping and getting painkillers via doctor and chemist for Jay.
I get hyper on these steroids and just do everything, and then am still hyper and can't sleep....so ended up yesterday pretty much of a zombie and didn't have the energy to do anything.
Now I have had a night's sleep....except the cat woke me at 6 am...

When i saw her, Jay was able to move around a bit and heat herself soup and the heat pad - but the pain gets bad at night.
I'm worrying that she is taking too many of the painkillers.
