to expect that not all grandfathers are known as grandad?!

I have been ranting grin

Trying to find a card for "grandpa" has proved impossible. Every single one (in ten shops or more) has been for "grandad". Yet our family (and so many other people I've asked) have always used "grandpa" - and sending a card that says "grandad" would be like addressing it to Martin if their name is actually Michael.

Has anyone found or received a "grandpa" card? According to the owner of one card the word is only used in America! Um...not in our family or countless others. And are there other popular grandparent names you'd like to see but never been able to find?

I'm on a mission!!

In Scotland, grandfathers are often Papa. Even more difficult. Suggest you (a) make one, (b) cross out 'dad' and add 'pa'.

Practical as ever, me [smug emoticon]

We have ended up making one - but she had set her heart on finding a nice one and there's nothing at all. There seems to be fairly even split between grandad and grandpa - yet the cards don't reflect it all all. [grumpy ranty face]

It is a sad world that can't produce a grandpa card. [another grumpy ranty face]

Very chuffed to hear you've ended up making one, Cari - they're the best. sunshine

Here in France, it is very difficult to find any relation cards at all, so I buy a job lot of daughter, grandchild and great-grand-daughter cards when I am in the UK. Cards are a lot cheaper in the UK too. I have always been Nana, but I am Nannynoo to my great gds. No idea why!

Grossi Wed 19-Sep-12 12:09:37

My children have one Grandpa (my father) and one Grandad (the other one).

MiceElf Wed 19-Sep-12 12:11:12

I'm married to Grandpa too. Don't know about cards but he got a lovely mug with Grandpa written on it that DiL found on the Internet. I got a Granny one as well. It's got the copyright sign next to Fellows on the base.

DD said she found the only "grandpa" card in WH Smith's for DH earlier this year! It made him feel unique as he is definitely not Grandad. I am also adamant that I am Granny and not Grandma - LF tried that on a few weeks ago and I had to pretend not to hear!!

cari try the online card people where you can put anything on the card you want.

But a homemade card is extra special I much prefer them. sunshine

Hope Granpa has a good day, he will love his special card.

harrigran Wed 19-Sep-12 12:28:19

My GC call their other grandfather Pawpaw so no chance of finding a card in a shop. I agree glass online card people are great and you can customise card to cover any event. Handmade is special Cari and any Grandfather would be pleased to receive smile

Agreed, make your own with the grand-children if poss. Or get one and alter it, very obviously, as a joke. BTW my OH is also known as Grandpa.

I thought this thread was going to be about calling Grandpas, etc, by their first name. Each to their own, but I find it sad when grand-parents are embarrassed about being grand-parents - which for me is a privilege. I'd never dream of asking grand-children to call me by my first name, to be 'cool'. (we do know many who do)

gracesmum Wed 19-Sep-12 13:41:14

Asked LF his name he replied "Wiyam Diddup", "what's Mummy's name? " "Mummy Diddup" "and Daddy's?" " Daddy Diddup."(Their surname is not Diddup, but close-ish)
If I asked him mine I hope it would be "Gwanny".

Cari, on www.moonpig.com you can design a card with your own wording. It can then be sent direct to the recipient or sent to you to be sent on to Grandpa with your own greeting on it in your own handwriting.

whoops! www.moonpig.com

granjura Wed 19-Sep-12 14:05:57

I love being 'Gwanny' smile

I would have said that 'Grandpa' was just as popular as 'Grandad'. I have rarely heard anyone call or refer to their grandfather as 'Grandad'.

Sadly my DGC only have one living grandfather as DDiL's father died when she was a toddler. He is called 'Grandpa'. The Grandm's are just that, with their first names appended to differentiate. DS was hoping that I would be called Grannima, which is what he called his paternal grandmother, but despite his best attempts 'Grandma' seems to be winning

glassortwo Wed 19-Sep-12 14:26:23

flick My DGC call my FIL their Grandad, used a lot in the North.

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Wed 19-Sep-12 14:33:12

granjura absolutely - and it's because he is so proud of being a grandpa that we wanted to find a card.

gracesmum yes have had the same problem - was pleased to find a "gran" card.

anno yes I'm a big moonpig fan. But she wanted to come and choose in the shops with me this time.

And glass - Very proud to be a northerner (but I still use grandpa!)

Go and look on www.folksy.com - individuals selling all kinds of handmade things, including cards which they will personalise as you wish. (Yes I suppose this is advertising, in a way, but it is advertising a lot of individual craftspeople, most of them amateurs....... a bit like saying "get it on ebay".....)

Here is an uninspiring one from M&S.

They are very thin on the ground even online.

My husband and my son's father in law are both called Paul. So to avoid problems, he is Grandad Paul and my husband is Grandad Bear (now, naturally, shortened to Bear). This makes me Nanny Bear. No chance of any cards there, then, so my son and daughter in law just buy ordinary grandad cards and write the "proper" names inside - our Littlies are too small to write yet. I think it is lovely to have a special name - the husband of one of my friends is known as "Gnome" - always thought that was great. smile

shysal Wed 19-Sep-12 17:10:34

Ebay has a small selection of Grandpa cards.
