adverts to be banned

This could be a stand-alone section I fear. I am very angry with NatWest the bank for their latest advert featuring a large picture of a lovely little girl holding a huge ice-cream covered with syrup and sugar etc..Is this in line with all the health recommendations and the obesity problem ? of course not. We do not need this type of adverts, it is like advertising tobacco or alcohol, should be banned. What do you think ?

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 26-Apr-14 18:09:56

I like that sweet red syrup. And sprinkles.

It's not a different question. The ad is still perfectly reasonable.

and a new one where the dad is frying some bacon, he makes bacon butty for teenager...teenager walks down half asleep taking plate from dad and not a word of thanks! tut!!

bikergran Sat 26-Apr-14 18:07:07

the Utterley Buttery one...cartoon kids making toast for mummy n daddy...but mummy n daddy are busy! doing something else when kiddies take breakfast up!! is there really any need to bring sex into a "butter" advert!

Well, yes, your'e right, this is a different question, but I often think that about ads 'this is hardly going to make anyone buy it' factor. You wonder who comes up with these crazy ideas sometimes.

janeainsworth Sat 26-Apr-14 10:37:06

There is an ad in today's paper, spread over two half-pages, showing the little girl with a very large ice-cream with a 99 stuck in it and covered in sprinkles and unappetising looking red syrup, so I think that is what Jocelyne was referring to, not the video.

What puzzles me is why the advert makers and Nat West think that a picture of a little girl about to eat a large ice-cream is going to make anyone open a Nat-West account just so they can get an app on their smartphone that will enable them to get money out of cash machines without the bother of getting their debit card out of their handbag.

Or why this would make a child think their mother was 'magic'.

Yuk.

Should I phone for the ambulance now, or leave it until later?

rosesarered Sat 26-Apr-14 10:32:53

Later on I further over indulged in half a box of Maltesers. It was one of those nights.

rosesarered Sat 26-Apr-14 10:30:14

As I first observed, think Jocelyne WAS 'aving a laff, but on here, who knows?merlot I DID over indulge last night with a bacon sandwich in fact, lean bacon with fried tomatoes in a freshly cooked baguette, SLURP!

Deedaa Fri 25-Apr-14 23:05:12

As the little girl was also show doing karate she was obviously being reasonably active and it looked a very normal size cornet.
It was very hot yesterday afternoon, GS1 spent half an hour after school running about like a maniac and I bought us both an ice cream on the way home and didn't feel a bit guilty!

merlotgran Fri 25-Apr-14 22:44:55

granjura, not everyone has a sweet tooth. I can only eat a small piece of chocolate and rarely ate sweets as a child. I am more likely to over indulge with a bacon sandwich.

Do people really crave sugar like alcohol or nicotine?

Joelsnan Fri 25-Apr-14 20:17:36

Too much oxygen can lead to brain damage, lung damage, blindness and ultimately death...do we stop breathing! There is far too much scaremongering with regard to food and too many gullible people who are drawn into these fads.
Advertising food items can encourage purchases of fast foods, however obesity is a far more complex syndrome to be attributable purely to eating junk food. Our lifestyles have changed immeasurably in the last fifty years.

I would ban payday loans, gambling ads and no win no fee solicitors for starters smile

granjura Fri 25-Apr-14 18:15:11

Because it is very addictive, and the body and the brain crave forever more- just like a drug.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 25-Apr-14 18:13:06

I don't understand how it can be a drug. I agree it's bad for you in excess, but a drug? confused

durhamjen Fri 25-Apr-14 18:00:44

Just like Janea said.

granjura Fri 25-Apr-14 17:48:23

Sugar is 'the most dangerous drug of our time' and should come with smoking-style health warnings, says Dutch health chief

Paul van der Velpen, head of Amsterdam's health service, says sugar is a drug and its use should be discouraged because it is addictive
He says when people are eating fats and proteins they stop when they are full but if they are eating sugar they keep eating for longer
He suggests sugar should be taxed and regulated like alcohol and tobacco

granjura Fri 25-Apr-14 17:40:55

Absolutely Soutra- a little of what you fancy does you good. I am absolutely sure we all agree on this.

Problem is, some kids' diet include a huge amount of hidden sugars, in cereals, drinks and so much more- and the risks are clear and well documented- and it does act like a drug, with the body needing more and more. Surely no one would deny this is a modern problem.

Soutra Fri 25-Apr-14 17:36:27

"We want sugar and syrup
When do we want it?
Now!!! "
If not, a "99" will do nicely grin

Nonu Fri 25-Apr-14 17:32:25

Doubt very much whether we will see any more of JOCE !!
smile

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 25-Apr-14 17:14:51

blushgrin

We need Jocelyne to come back and tell us where she saw this ad. Was it on a hoarding? Is there more sugar and syrup on the ice cream cone?

merlotgran Fri 25-Apr-14 17:06:22

So it's ALL YOUR FAULT, jingl grin

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 25-Apr-14 17:00:56

I'm starting to realize it's a print advert the OP is referring to. Perhaps on a hoarding. Maybe that's the ad with the sugar and syrup.

I think I have misled everyone by putting up the Tele-ad.

Sorry!

Soutra Fri 25-Apr-14 16:58:23

I have had a really good laugh reading this thread- thank you all very much!!! I used to love a "99" and while I have not seen the ad so perhaps shouldn't judge I think that we have more healthy eating advice these days than we used to have hot dinners. An ice cream is a treat not a heart attack waiting to happen. Fat used to be demonised, then carbs ("no carbs after 6pm") now sugar - why can't we just enjoy everything in .moderation or as that renowned dietician music hall artiste Marie Lloyd used to
sing "A little of what you fancy does you good"grin

Nonu Fri 25-Apr-14 16:56:11

Probably on a sabbatical from the "Other Side" .
grin

merlotgran Fri 25-Apr-14 16:50:53

Do you think jocelyne is 'aving a larff?

Nonu Fri 25-Apr-14 16:50:15

In my paper yesterday it stated that children should be allowed to

a] watch television
b] have fizzy drinks
c] eat sweeties

All in moderation of course, bit like adults really !!

smile
