2 months ago I posted a question on TripAdvisor about a holiday resort we were visiting. My TA account is connected to my Facebook account which has my picture on. We went on this holiday recently and after being there for 5 days this lady came to me and said it's 'name' , I racked my little brain and couldn't think who she was so I had to say I'm sorry who are you. She then pulled out her phone which she had saved of this post from TA which showed my photo. As you can imagine I was a little taken back. She then proceeded to let me know that she regularly saved any posts from people who were staying at the same hotel as her every time she goes away.(6 times a year).
I've come home and changed my photo. It's freaked me out. Weird or what.

I have seen it! Scary stuff. Even if you take the greatest care the amount of information is huge.
I am going to look into it - I think my privacy levels are high but I bet they have all sorts of information that I am not aware of at the moment.

Jalima1108 Wed 28-Mar-18 16:49:14

Blencathra look at the Cambridge Analytica thread - a poster has put a link on there to a Guardian article about how much google, fb etc have stored about users!

Blencathra Wed 28-Mar-18 16:35:49

I could go in FB read someone's comments and think 'that sounds like x ' so log on to GN to see if I was right.
I am not likely to do that but OP shows that some people go to great lengths if they read Trip Advisor and go to the lengths of looking up the person on FB.
I don't put my real name on TripAdvisor, I do not have my photo (I have a seaside picture) and I do not link to FB.

Blencathra Wed 28-Mar-18 16:31:33

There are people who say where they live, their age, number of grandchildren etc and some have photos. OK if they are comfortable with that.

MissAdventure Wed 28-Mar-18 16:29:02

I'd like to think that's how it will work. Fingers crossed. smile

Blencathra Wed 28-Mar-18 16:26:03

Sensibly you don't have a profile MissAdventure so you remain anonymous as long as you don't give too much personal information in threads.

MissAdventure Wed 28-Mar-18 16:13:45

Yes, but my real name isn't 'adventure'. Its far more boring.
So, not quite the same.

Blencathra Wed 28-Mar-18 15:59:19

I have found the passport one on FB and 15 people have made comments about it, in addition to the 166 by GN users. As a member of FB there is nothing to stop me adding my comment on individual GNetters and saying 'I think x is talking utter rubbish' or 'I agree with the sensible comment from y'. I wouldn't because x and y probably won't see it- they don't realise that all of FB can read it! Or they are under the impression they are not on FB because they don't have an account.

Jalima1108 Wed 28-Mar-18 15:39:26

I see that my comments on passports are on Twitter I haven't commented on Twitter but GN have put them there.
iswym now

I think the comments on FB on a particular thread are purely FB comments by FB users, not taken from the GN thread. I didn't realise that comments were duplicated on to Twitter (I'm not a twitterer).

Blencathra Wed 28-Mar-18 06:36:01

Sites not sights!

Blencathra Wed 28-Mar-18 06:34:39

Exactly. That was my point. If I read the threads on FB I don't bother seeing who has commented on there- there are irrelevant when most of those on the thread don't know they are reading it!
I only commented to make the point that it is all connected- beyond FB- onto Pinterest, Google, TripAdvisor Twitter and others. Therefore it is useless saying that you are not on something like FB when lots of your opinions are on there for all to see.
To answer OP it is not surprising . Don't link accounts, watch your privacy levels, be careful how you sign into sights and don't have a profile on GN. (Unless of course you are quite happy with it all.)

MissAdventure Tue 27-Mar-18 23:29:05

It all seems a bit pointless really, people on Facebook or Twitter commenting on threads that were started here, by people who are never going to see what they're saying.

Blencathra Tue 27-Mar-18 22:38:20

I don't think it is very fair. I could go on Twitter and make very derogatory comments about some of the names who have signed the DM petition- but I wouldn't comment on there because they probably don't know the debate has been widened. They may even be on FB too- I haven't looked.

Blencathra Tue 27-Mar-18 22:31:20

Would people who hate FB be a bit miffed to find that FB users have read their comments on FB and then said what they think?

Blencathra Tue 27-Mar-18 22:29:06

I read the 77 comments by GNetters on FB about cookery books. Only 7 people have commented on FB but I didn't bother looking. Sometimes no one comments.

Blencathra Tue 27-Mar-18 22:22:00

I expect that I can but I don't look. I see that my comments on passports are on Twitter I haven't commented on Twitter but GN have put them there. It is a long thread with lots of comments - one Twitter person has commented underneath.

Jalima1108 Tue 27-Mar-18 22:18:53

I'm sorry, you've lost me completely now smile

I see FB names in the comments underneath the articles on FB.

Blencathra Tue 27-Mar-18 22:14:52

I am aware you can see comments on FB underneath but I don't bother reading them. I stick to the GN names.

Blencathra Tue 27-Mar-18 22:13:29

I don't know what you are looking at but I see the GN names on FB- I do not need to look on GN to see which cookery books people like- I can read it on FB and never have to look on GN.

Blencathra Tue 27-Mar-18 22:11:31

However clear links are made people are unaware or Nanawind wouldn't be freaked out to find TripAdvisor and FB linked.

Jalima1108 Tue 27-Mar-18 22:10:11

There aren't GN names on FB.

The comments underneath are by FB users. They could be the same people as post on here or not.

Blencathra Tue 27-Mar-18 22:09:18

For example Tessa101 says she doesn't like or do FB and yet if she comments and the thread is linked to FB people can log onto GN and she gives her name, age, grandchildren's names and more. OK if she knows this and is happy. I wouldn't want it - therefore keep myself anonymous.

Blencathra Tue 27-Mar-18 22:04:26

There are GN names on FB - fine if you are completely anonymous, but not if you have a profile and photos.

Jalima1108 Tue 27-Mar-18 22:03:28

I think it has been made clear over several threads of the link between GN and FB.

Jalima1108 Tue 27-Mar-18 22:02:50

They're not exactly on there - there is a link back to GN. No names are used on FB.
