To expect Lidl to replace my torn plastic bag?

Like other supermarkets,Lidl's bags say that they will be replaced when broken but when I handed my old one over the assistant said they only do this for ones that break in the shop or the carpark and that anyway mine was far too old !I was astounded so rang their customer service and was told that this was indeed the case.Strange !Has anyone else been more successful ?

That's a bit mean.
Surely as a gesture of goodwill, they should have replaced it.
Still, like a lot of things, insurances included, the companies seem to be able to wriggle out of 'paying up', when it suits them.

I told them Auntieflo that I would take my custom to our new Aldi but they did not seem bothered !Actually I haven't been to the new Aldi yet .

Oh blimey all that over a plastic bag I ve got plenty I can send you
They don’t last for ever how can you be so upset over a 10p bit of plastic

Greenfinch Sat 28-Sep-19 17:06:37

Oh dear! I wish I hadn't mentioned it. Forget I ever said anything. It was the principle and I was not upset just very surprised.

NotSpaghetti Sat 28-Sep-19 17:10:24

Suppose it depends if it was marketed as a "bag for life" or just a carrier bag???

Cherrytree59 Sat 28-Sep-19 17:13:13

Greenfinch agree it is the principle.
Enjoy a good nose around your new Aldi?

MawB Sat 28-Sep-19 17:17:42

Your phone call will have cost you more than a replacement bag!
It may be a principle, but is it really an issue worth pursuing?
I would always use a cloth bag any way smile

Greenfinch Sat 28-Sep-19 17:20:29

Point taken but phone call was free. Let's just drop the subject.

Nortsat46 Sat 28-Sep-19 17:32:23

Greenfinch just before we drop the subject - thank you for the information, it's useful to know.

welbeck Sat 28-Sep-19 17:40:25

is this a wind-up. surely no one can be so cheapsake ?
you must be joking, surely. you expected them to give you a replacement for an old torn plastic bag.....
I thought mumsnet was the home of the hoaxer !
gave me a chuckle anyway.

It is Lidl, not Greenfinch who is being petty. I don't think that her harmless OP warrants the digs and implications of pettiness it has elicited.

Tedber Sat 28-Sep-19 18:02:40

I don't like mean comments either but it isn't something that would bother me t.b.h. I can never even be bothered requesting new bags at the ones who do offer free replacements (mainly because I forget to take them back ha ha). I just hope all my contributions are helping a good cause - shame we can't nominate our own when purchasing really but I guess would be there all day!

Greenfinch Sat 28-Sep-19 18:17:03

Thanks for your kind words Amagran. It is not a wind up and call me a cheapskate if you like but I thought it was right to take the old bags back for recycling. Most people do around here.

paddyann Sat 28-Sep-19 19:36:47

at Morrisons last week the man on the till said "your bag looks a bit worse for wear ,take another one off the hook" I was pleasantly surprised but as I had another bag in my handbag I declined .I'm still working my way through bags from before the change came in.

BlueBelle Sat 28-Sep-19 20:35:52

paddyann I am too I ve got 3 big bags of bags
I didn’t mean to be hurtful Greenfinch in my post but I did think there was a punchline coming If the principle really is important to you then I apologise I was just a bit taken aback

Maggiemaybe Sat 28-Sep-19 21:28:28

I understand where you're coming from, Greenfinch, and of course there's a principle at stake. If they advertise the fact that they replace the bags, then they should do so. The "only if they break in the store or the carpark" rule sounds daft, and a bit like something they've just made up on the spot!

I don't use Lidl, but to their credit I have heard recently that they've introduced a reusable drawstring bag for putting loose fresh produce in. That sounds promising.

I’m with Lidl on this one. It’s a discount no frills supermarket. I love it and Aldi. If it were Waitrose I’m sure you’d get a lovely new bag., but you’d pay for it with higher prices for your groceries. You pays yer money.......

Calendargirl Sun 29-Sep-19 04:52:08

They should replace it if that’s what they say they will do, no matter if it’s old or if it’s a no frills supermarket.

crystaltipps Sun 29-Sep-19 04:55:43

I’m not sure Lidl have ever called their bags “ for life” have they? I thought that was a Sainsbury’s slogan.

Greenfinch Sun 29-Sep-19 08:54:12

My "old" bag from Lidl states "If this bag breaks we will recycle your old bag and replace it free of charge" Obviously if it had not,I would not have tried to follow it through .smile

bikergran Sun 29-Sep-19 09:01:37

At Asda our bags are called "bags for life" .

The idea is that if your bag is ripped/torn/handles broke
you bring along your torn bag and we replace it.

That! bag that is torn goes for recycling.

This is meant to stop you throwing away the torn bag and having to buy a new one.
