My dad has just moved into a care home and is pretty fed up - I`m trying to find him things to do to take his mind off his situation. I got him an adult colouring book and some crayons but he is not greatly impressed by the results he is getting. He isn`t able to press down on the crayons so the pictures do look a bit washed out. Would he do better with pens? If so, can anyone recommend a good starter set. I don`t want to spend a great deal at this stage in case he decides it`s not for him.
Any advice would be much appreciated. I know absolutely nothing about this!

Lewlew What a lovely painting, and what a great achievement.

sillup My mum is 95 and also has age-related macular degeneration. I'm afraid she is rather set in her ways and is very resistant to any other way of doing things. She does receive material from a charity for sight-impaired people but she just will not listen to the audio magazines or books. Neither will she listen to the radio which is, of course, geared up to listen to rather than to watch. She has the TV blaring but because she can't see what is happening, she's not really taking it in.

We do have a sing-song together sometimes. She was a beautiful singer and pianist when she was younger and can still manage a tune.

After reading some of the comments here, I'm wondering whether, if I actually read the book to her myself, she might be less resistant.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

Thank you boo and Blinko!

He was only seeing a bit peripherally by this time so I am amazed he did as well as that. He was 89 in the photo and kept painting. He died just before his 91st birthday in 2006. I still miss him!
