Following the success of The Roses last year, we're delighted to be involved in The Older People In The Media Awards (new name, same thing) in 2013.

As last year, there will be a special Gransnet award for the best older person's character in a film, TV or radio drama, chosen by gransnetters. (Last year, Maggie Smith won as the Dowager Lady Grantham in Downton Abbey). As last year, the character must have appeared between August last year and August this year.

Suggest nominations here. We'll have a chance to vote on a shortlist after the summer.

Full details on the page. You can also vote on all the other categories on the awards web page.

This is a really good way of generating discussion about the issues facing older people and how they are portrayed, so we are putting on our thinking caps here at GNHQ. That usually requires wine

here is what's ridiculous about Celia Imrie. She goes on trashy shows like this

j08 Fri 05-Jul-13 19:03:32

She's an ageing bimbo.

Nonu Fri 05-Jul-13 19:09:22

Bit harsh there , agree it is a white trailer trash show .

BUT a gal has to do what a gal has to do !!

Has to turn a buck , somehow .

grin

j08 Fri 05-Jul-13 19:10:28

Ha! Shows she's not a very good actress then. Can't get parts! grin

Nonu Fri 05-Jul-13 19:14:37

Meanie !!!

I like her a lot !

Sylvia Goodwin (Stephanie Cole) or Gloria Price (Sue Johnston), the two best characters in Corrie, or at least the two with the best lines. Neither of them coming close to the late lamented Blanche Hunt (Maggie Jones) though:

"Like Postman Pat, do you? So long as you remember it's a work of fiction. 'Early in the morning, when the day is dawning?' Your real Postman Pat rolls up around noon wearing a pair of shorts and his breakfast. And, if he's not chucking elastic bands about like confetti, he'll be rifling through your birthday cards for ready cash, or leaving your valuables out on the step.

Nowt but propaganda, is this! And as for Mrs Goggins, she'd be cowering behind three-inch glass with a baseball bat under the counter... assuming that her post office hasn't been shut down, of course."

And that AA meeting when she laid into every member of her family. Comedy gold! Sadly she's no longer eligible for any award this side of the pearly gates.

j08 Fri 05-Jul-13 19:29:24

Yes. Very good lines. Corrie gold. smile

If it's the character we've to nominate then I suggest Mrs Brown.

j08 Fri 05-Jul-13 23:22:10

Ooh yes!

Why didn't I think of that? Mrs Brown gets my vote too.

Sorry Judy et al.

merlotgran Sat 06-Jul-13 09:26:35

And mine grin

Why has a post been deleted?

j08 Sat 06-Jul-13 09:28:13

Yes. She's a very well rounded matriarch isn't she. She supports everyone in her family, even grandad! She makes us laugh, but there are situations we can recognise too. Somehow we can have empathy with her.

j08 Sat 06-Jul-13 09:30:48

I wanna know what that post said. hmm

j08 Sat 06-Jul-13 09:31:38

And it would be a way of giving it to a man AND a woman! Could be ideal all round. smile

Ana Sat 06-Jul-13 09:38:20

Brendan O'Carroll's only 57 though...

j08 Sat 06-Jul-13 09:43:32

Ah!

The character comes across as a bit older then that perhaps? It is supposed to be the character rather than the actress (I think).

Oldgreymare Sat 06-Jul-13 09:59:33

The entire casts of 'Marigold Hotel' (apart from the young 'uns) and Quartet, especially Pauline Collins.
Derek Jacobi and Anne Reid, Alison Steadman, and the very naughty 'Nan' (O.K. I realise 'she' is really too young but we were asked for characters!)

Oldgreymare Sat 06-Jul-13 10:03:45

I mean the characters played by the above! blush

Stansgran Sat 06-Jul-13 10:19:30

So how old is old?

NfkDumpling Tue 16-Jul-13 22:09:20

Older than me. grin

NfkDumpling Tue 16-Jul-13 22:11:50

Isn't it a good sign that there's so many to choose from? I can't think of one particular character - agree that it should be all the oldies in Marigold Hotel and Quartet.

Cora from 'Enders (Anne Mitchell) is still the best of this bunch.

By miles.
