Im just wondering how many ladies have let their hair go grey. Im 65 and still have mine done blonde with highlights , but im starting to worry about how much longer I can keep this up. Not only is it an expense at the hairdressers but I dont want to look like mutton dressed as lamb.
My hair is thick and I wear it in a bob. I dont suit very short styles.
Any advise about growing out the colour would be helpful.

I spent a couple of years growing out the dye and two years with grey hair. Initially I felt liberated, only needed a hair cut every 8 weeks or so and free of the dye, roots issue.
I've just had a blonde/grey colour on it. It looks so much better and I feel so much better.
Sorry!

I stopped dyeing mine eleven months ago. My hair was falling out in handfuls. My mother and sister both developed alopecia. My sister advised me to change my shampoo etc. and I decided to let the dye grow out. My hair stopped falling out and has regrown. I’d been colouring since I was fifteen as I had mousy hair. So far everyone likes my silver hair. It’s still blonde at the ends. I’ve also stopped straightening it. I joined a FB group called Curly Silvers who are a great support.

Yesterday I was feeling old as I saw women with shiny, beautiful hair (mine has been short, 'Arctic blonde', i.e. a shade of white, for the last three years (I'm 73)), when I happened to meet a young woman with short, trendy cut, bright copper coloured hair who said as she passed by, 'I love your hair'. She made my day!

Diane, I know exactly how you feel.

I realised earlier this year, that... at 67... the sun kissed Surfer Chick had probably had her day and it was time to move on !

I have thick hair.... cut in a spiky bob.... think early Rod Stewart.

What I did to kick the process off... was to colour the whole lot grey... I did this two or three times... leaving it a little longer each time between doing it.

By then I knew two things.... firstly I loved my new look... and secondly, so did other people !

After years of being blonde, I was suddenly getting compliments again... many from people I didn't know... especially at the gym.

At that point I stopped doing a full colour... but every time I wash my hair I now use one of these lilac coloured shampoos.

It works a treat.

I absolutely love my colour... and am only cross I didn't do it years ago.

Give it a go - it's great !!

I have half head highlights and basically I am blonde (ish). I am having it done once more then just going to let it go. It's the right time me

Thankyou everyone. I feel relieved to hear all the positive comments. Im going to go for it. Have a great day ladies. X

The funny thing is that binning the dye may well make you look ( and feel !) years younger. Many women in their 50's are rocking their silver locks and enjoying the fact that they will also have fewer frown lines because they don't spend two weeks out of every four agonising over the badger streak of re-growth.

I coloured my brown hair with reddish non-bleach products now and then but haven't for years. I've always fancied having green or purple or pink hair and shocking the family. Grandson, then 11, got there first with his mum's help. He bleached and then went green. The school were fine! I think mum might have checked first. Then I thought bleach is bad for hair and I've been waiting to perhaps go green or pink when I am mostly grey or white and it takes the colour easily, but I actually quite like how the grey is creeping into the brown. And i am lazy. Having it cut is bad enough, never mind sit at the hairdresser for ages while it is coloured. And I suppose green or pink is not a matter of getting a packet of harmony from Asda.

I’m in the middle of going grey. I had long, dark ashy brown hair which I wore loose or tied up. I’ve just had a pixie cut and will just let the grey grow. I was a bit upset in the hairdressers but pleased by the time I got home! I’m pleased I’ve decided to go grey and even quite liking my short hair after a lifetime of long hair. Good Luck with it ?

I am really torn, my hair was very dark brown with red undertones. I found my first grey hair aged 15 and had to start dyeing my hair regularly by age 26. I am fed up of dyeing my hair, but I know if definitely makes me look older. I haven’t dyed my hair for several months so it is a mix of grey, nearly white and light brown. I am sick of dyeing it but my husband has commented that it makes me look older and to be fair he’s right. What to do....

Mamma66 Tue 09-Jul-19 11:38:24

I forgot to mention, I’m 53 now

I have very short hair. I used to have blond high lights until my hair dresser recommended that I stop dying it. He said people would pay a fortune to have my natural colour, grey, blond, brown etc. It is now a lot more grey but so easy to manage and means I can wear purple!!!

Am 62, stopped colouring a few years ago - totally liberating and I enjoy the different colours, style choices if clothing I now have - go for it!

I always had very dark hair but somehow magically became more and more blonde over a number of hair appointments. I call it 'pension blonde' and I love it. Not giving it up yet as my grey seems to be far more along the parting line than anywhere else. I'd look like a mottled badger if I went au naturel.

GabriellaG54 Tue 09-Jul-19 12:37:35

It costs so much.
I never tip my hairdresser nowadays. These are some bills.
£87 roots and blow dry
£92 flashes, hair masque (conditioner + hot towel) and blow dry
£125 roots, cut and blow dry

GabriellaG54 Tue 09-Jul-19 12:39:10

Oop's. £125 £129.50 shock

GabriellaG54 Tue 09-Jul-19 12:42:51

I can't imagine that allowing children to have green hair is normal...or even adults. How many job interviews would you get?

Theoddbird Tue 09-Jul-19 12:44:24

I started dying my hair metallic silver. I was dying my hair light ash Brown before that. By using silver the transition was easier... I used Schwarzkopf. They have shampoo dye for in between colouring which also helped. I love my silver hair

TwiceAsNice Tue 09-Jul-19 12:52:07

I am nearly 66. Still dyeing/highlighting hair and will go on at the moment. It was grey for a while when I was I’ll a few years ago because couldn’t get to the salon and I hated it

Lancslass1 Tue 09-Jul-19 13:36:45

I am 78 years of age
I would quite like to be silver grey but my hair is boring mouse.
I haven’t got any grey hair as such but two natural Mallen streaks of what I like to think are ash blond at the side of my face so I have highlights in ash blond on the rest of my hair because I think lighter hair is more flattering when one gets older.
I don’t wish to offend those who dye their grey hair burgundy or black but anyone who does that should not ,in my opinion ,have a parting because it doesn’t take long for the grey roots to show.

Tinker18 Tue 09-Jul-19 14:21:10

I'm in a fab Facebook group called Gray and Proud, full of lovely supportive people who have embraced their natutal colour. I've found it very helpful during my own transition (2 years 4 months in)

dogsmother Tue 09-Jul-19 14:21:58

61, a bob with white ( okay grey ) fringe and a few bits near my ears but all natural and I do get good comments and one was actual “hair envy”. But i do go @nd get it trimmed every 6 weeks. I couldn’t be doing with spending money on dye.

Quizzer Tue 09-Jul-19 14:41:30

I think it depends on what colour you started with. Friends whose hair was dark look great with natural silver hair which compliments their darker skin tones. If you were fairer, but not really blonde, and like me with fair skin, you can look washed out. Try a very light caramel or ash colour, no need for expensive highlights

Jani Tue 09-Jul-19 14:44:03

Well I have just had my 65th birthday and still have a mixture of golden highlights put in - have a few grey hairs but keeping it golden blonde I hope as long as possible - like crazyH
grey isn’t my colour - whatever colour I go I am just thankful I have lots of hair still.

Patticake123 Tue 09-Jul-19 14:52:30

I stopped having it coloured when I retired 9 years ago. I couldn’t stand the hours spent in the hairdressers and the cost was significant. Mine is now natural two tone. A bit like a badger really. White on top and a grey colour at the sides and back that defies description. Much darker than I ever was (I think). Good news is, I keep it in a fashionable style and I get a lot of compliments which I didn’t when it was dyed. Go for it!
