On New Zealand's North Island, I visited the Gumdiggers' Park tourist attraction, where a workforce used to excavate the gum extruded from the ancient buried Kauri forest. The gum is very similar to amber and is used in jewellery. Among the exhibits we say were long rubber boots worn by the diggers: gum boots! I don't know if this is the origin of the name sometimes given to wellies, but it seems possible.

Water boots might be a Northern Irish term, but not in other parts of Ireland. Wellingtons when I was growing up, wellies nowadays.

There are some interesting local names for things - in Cork (Ireland) Rubber Dollies are gym shoes, runners, trainers or whatever you call them!

Wellyboots in my house. My late DF wore galoshes - water proof coverings for shoes.

I’m Scottish and definitely Wellies. Having said that when I was really Wee I called them “bogats” why? I know not.

Around here they're called rubber boots or gum boots.
