Do you listen to music much, ladies and gents?
What kind do you enjoy, and has it changed much from when you were younger?
Do you have song which take you back to specific times in your life?
Thank you; I love music, and interested in everyone's thoughts. smile

Oh yes. I live for music; always have. I was lucky growing up; my father was a music librarian and brought home lots of music (mainly classical) which we would sit and listen too (I know that sounds a bit cheesy...). It was mainly the usual suspects - Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert, Verdi, Rossini, and Strauss etc. I also loved hymns (I'm not remotely religious) and particularly Welsh hymns. I started to play piano at about 9, thanks to my gran's having a piano in her house. My cousin was also into pop music ay the time and I was sometimes allowed to play some of his records. My first recollection of hearing a "pop" record was It's Not Unusual in a café in Builth Wells in mid Wales! I also remember the Beatles' earlyish stuff -Help, Twist and Shout etc being played on the radio at home, along with Magic Moments, one of my mother's favourites.

I didn't do music at schoolsad and gave up piano at 15. However I finally went back to it as an adult (quite recently).

I'm mainly interested in jazz to play, but I love any kind of music to listen too, really. In the car, it's mainly disco, soul and funk, and at home it's jazz (particularly cool jazz) and rhythm and blues.

I honestly don't think I could live without music. It's part of me-in my soul.

Lovely! Do you still have 'music sessions' or is it more of a background thing now?

My biggest fear in life is that I might one day be deaf. I feel that I could live with anything other than that, because music is my life - listening, performing and sharing the joy of music with others.

I listen to music every day , although listen to Radio 4 a lot too, I swap about with my local radio station. Music gets me moving around,I do excercises to it, get showered to it and get dressed to it.I dance about to it as well.grin reliving my youth, as I went to dances every week when a teenager, flinging myself and my long hair about on the dancefloor energetically ( what I lacked in grace I made up for with enthusiasm) .
I have a radio in almost every room in the house and a couple of cd players, and a good music collection , pop, indie, jazz, soul, folk and classical.I can't go out in the car without a cd to play.if I need cheering up then I put something very upbeat on, to relax it's piano sonatas.

I like music to be on most of the day . It can carry you along when doing the house work , head banging rock whilst hoovering and shoving furniture about , it empowers ! Then something silky to do the ironing to . Some can be instantly comforting or take you off to other times . Let that music play on .

Life would be awful without music. I love pop, classical, rock, country, almost everything really except rap(with a c in front).

I love music although sadly I cannot play an instrument. I constantly have music playing at home, in my car and at work too. When I hear an old song I am immediately transported to a place and time. I was brought up with music and have my dad to thank for that. The was always music playing at home when I was a child and I also have my parents to thank for buying me my first stereo system when I was 12. It was amazing and in the summer I would put the speakers on the window sills (when my parents were out) and dance in the garden. I was brought up on Elvis, Buddy Holly, Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins, Ella Fitzgerald..... These days I like a wide mix of music but mainly listen to modern (and old style) country music although I am equally happy listening to Queen, Alice Cooper, or most rock bands. My DGC love music too and I am learning to love Little Mix who seem to be playing in a loop at mine when the grandchildren are here.

I share your varied taste grannypiper and remember my son being into Eminem when he was at home. Used to drive me nuts.

Yes, I love music too, almost any kind, and it is amazing how a tune can change the mood isn't it. When I ran the club for folk with learning disabilities, I would sometimes be sitting quietly with one of them, and suddenly he/she would say "My Mum/Dad died" out of the blue, when this first happened I wondered where that had come from, then listened to the music, that was the key.

Music has always been important to me. I was never much of a pop fan in my early teens - I liked classical and light orchestral music - but the Beatles and their contemporaries changed all that. I parted company with the pop scene in the late eighties (can't stand the stuff they play now, I'm afraid) and now my listening is mostly confined to jazz, classical, light classical and easy listening vocal. I enjoy playing the piano, but don't play all that well - I'm very much a desert island pianist (in that people wish I was on one when I am playing!!).

MissAdventure Fri 03-Feb-17 09:23:14

I've just recently started playing my music again; I had quite got out of the habit
I was a child of the 70s, so glam rock and then punk as became a teen.
I still enjoy both, but have moved to listening to more gentle stuff recently
"Spotify" has broadened my horizons, musically, and I'm exploring pshy chill at the moment,(sure I've spelled it wrong) lovely, gentle, Indian sounding beats. smile
Queen music always reminds me of my mum. Nipping along in her bright yellow escort car, singing along to Bohemian Rhapsody - her, myself, and my daughter.
We had that 'we are the champions' played at mums funeral, and it was just beautiful, with the vicar reading, in his beautiful voice over the top of the first few bars.

harrysgran Fri 03-Feb-17 09:26:58

My daughter introduced me to spotify recently and I love it I have different play lists depending on my mood I even have a housework play list

MissAdventure Fri 03-Feb-17 09:29:59

Its a wonderful thing, Spotify! grin I put the 'radio' on, and it suggests songs! Amazing!

Jaycee5 Fri 03-Feb-17 10:03:13

I prefer soul music. Slushy Percy Sledge style. I also like the music that Craig Charles plays on his show on BBC6 described as 'funk and soul' although I always forget that it is on.

Sheilasue Fri 03-Feb-17 10:06:18

Have my radio on all the time in the kitchen radio two or classical station. I also love to play my cd's. My mum always had the radio on when we were children, the light station it was called. I think ?

sandraanddaisy Fri 03-Feb-17 10:08:37

Music was always in the background of my life, all sorts, but when I got together with my lover almost 4 years ago it took a huge leap. He's a sound engineer of over 35 years, toured the world with bands and is also a accomplished musician himself. Now at age 56, I have a small studio in my home and we regularly have musical evenings, he plays and I sing (actually it's a dream come true, I was never confident in my own voice before). We went to Berlin Jazz Festival a couple of years ago and just last year went to Amsterdam to see The Necks 8 hour gig....it was stunning. Music is now in the forefront of my life and I'm loving it.

KatyK Fri 03-Feb-17 10:16:04

It's great going on a flight and listening to an ipod. We put all sorts on ours Beatles, Michael Buble, Frank Sinatra, Abba, lots of 60s stuff for me, Barbra Streisand. You never know what's coming up next. Makes the flight more pleasurable smile

Ramblingrose22 Fri 03-Feb-17 10:19:56

Which tracks do people find they must get up and dance to if they hear them?

I would like to do more exercise and this seems a good way to start.

MissAdventure Fri 03-Feb-17 10:27:07

Strange that, rose
Much as I enjoy music, I never dance. I really wish I could, but feel really self conscious, even on my own, in my own flat!

Craftycat Fri 03-Feb-17 10:32:55

Could not live without my music.
Bowie, Stones, Dylan, MJ, Bolan- showing my age now - but I do like an awful lot of 'modern' music too. A lot of RAP is really good is you listen to the lyrics- not the rude ones!

I love it turned up really loud in the car where I can sing along- when I have GC with me we have their music & all sing together.

Craftycat Fri 03-Feb-17 10:34:16

MissAdventure- if you can sit still to Uptown Funk I'll be amazed!

MindfulGrandma Fri 03-Feb-17 10:35:12

Playlist on Amazon Prime has been a revelation to me. Wonderful!

Kim19 Fri 03-Feb-17 10:46:17

Yes, I'm pathetically nostalgic and I have a tape designated to people and places. Some of these memories invoke joy some sheer melancholy and some a little tinge of sadness for what 'might have been'. They're specifically my tapestry of life which no one knows completely but me. Oh aye......BIG HAPPY sigh........ in fact, I think I'll just seek it out right now. Thank you MissAdventure.

MissAdventure Fri 03-Feb-17 10:47:18

Craftycat,
Is that a genre, or a song title?
I'd be interested to listen and see if I start to "throw some shapes" grin
