Have found 'Streetlife' so useful

The Streetlife site is finishing and we are asked to move to Nextdoor. When we moved to Hampshire from Kent we found Streetlife invaluable as a source to find good trades people, hairdressers, dentist, exercise classes etc. No one on our local Streetlife seems to like Nextdoor and complain that private information is not protected. It seems crazy to get rid of such a useful web site. Apologies if no one has a clue what I'm on about.

Thank you for the apology. I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

Charleygirl Fri 10-Feb-17 10:36:58

I could not agree more. I do not want to leave Streetlife either for exactly the same reasons but it would appear that we have little choice.

I've found Streetlife very useful and recently received the email notifying me of the changeover to Nextdoor. Quite by coincidence, I think it was yesterday I heard the founder on the radio - he's sold out to Nextdoor who are American.

I also liked Streetlife for good local info. When I went to look at Nextdoor it seemed I had to get 10 neighbours to sign up too, so that's never going to work!

annsixty Fri 10-Feb-17 10:45:39

Beware when moving over that your full name and address are shown to the people local to you. I have emailed to ask for my details to be deleted but so far all they have removed is the number of my house. The unsubscribe button seems not to work. Our local site has pages of complaints.

Thanks for that info, I've had the email asking me to transfer but was putting it off. I don't think I'll bother now...or at least I'll wait and see what Nextdoor is like first, then might join again.

Same here, Ana, I've just had my email this week. Streetlife in this area is so quiet it has tumbleweed blowing through, so I was hoping Nextdoor might be better. I'll wait and see what happens now.

I joined a local Facebook group where I get much more information - unfortunately you've to wade through an awful lot of garbage witty banter to get to it.

I liked Streetlife, found it really useful, but from what I've seen of Nextdoor I don't think I shall be staying. Such a shame.

Riverwalk Fri 10-Feb-17 11:03:23

Thanks from me too annsixty - was considering transfering over but don't particularly want to be identified by neighbours.

Sometimes members ask for recommendations on local social services, GPs, home tutors, etc and I wouldn't think you'd want your close neighbours knowing so much.

Another leaver

Just wondering if GN Local would be a good alternative? I'll mention it on Streetlife and see what happens. I'm just going to miss it so much and have no intention of using Nextdoor.

Elrel Fri 10-Feb-17 11:11:54

I've been very pleased with Street life the last few months, since I discovered it. All kinds of useful local contacts and information. Several people have posted on Streetlife that they won't go on Nextdoor because it is too identifying. Why do we have to sell everything to America?

I really found Streetlife useful but am not impressed by Nextdoor and am unhappy about how the migration has been handled. As a consequence I have deactivated both accounts. Such a shame.

POGS Fri 10-Feb-17 11:32:46

I was on Streetlife but I got bombarded by e.mails and left.

I did manage to get rid of some stuff mind so it had it's use.

NanaandGrampy Fri 10-Feb-17 13:15:22

Yes I moved over from Streetlife and promptly left. I see absolutely no necessity to have my full name and address on it.

I think it's very much the case of another American company buying something up that they don't understand the cultural nuances of.

tanith Fri 10-Feb-17 13:27:09

I loved Streetlife it was so useful, I moved over to Nextdoor but as soon as I realised they were so lax about security I deactivated my account I won't be using it and most of the people on my local Streetlife are not going to move over to it. Such a shame as lots of those people have started groups such as Pub Quizing etc..I'll miss it a lot.

JoyBloggs Fri 10-Feb-17 13:40:26

Yes, I'm going to miss Streetlife too, I've found it useful and interesting, but definitely not moving to Nextdoor, far too revealing!

ninathenana Fri 10-Feb-17 13:49:34

I've been putting off the change over too simply because I've never heard of Nextdoor and was dubious about the site. It says if you don't change before the cut off date your account will close so to avoid my details being shown (which I didn't know) I will be sticking to my plan of letting SL account close and checking out Nextdoor as a new member to see if I want to join.

Astra Fri 10-Feb-17 15:21:29

I also loved Streetlife and very disappointed that it is no longer.

I signed up with nextdoor and did not like the idea of using my
real full name and address even thought you could removed the house number still did't feel right, also it only covered a small
area, whereas Streetlife covered various area's in and around.
I found Streetlife very friendly. I've now deactivated my account

We should keep this thread running so if Nextdoor see it maybe they will change things if not many people sign up to it.

Nelliemoser Fri 10-Feb-17 15:35:52

I looked at this swop from streetlife very briefly this morning and I am worried that as far as I understood I have to give my full name and address. I do need to get more info but does that fit with what others understand?

tanith Fri 10-Feb-17 15:48:40

yes Nelliemoser and unless you change the settings your full name and address is displayed as the default setting. You can remove the number but not the name or street. That is what most people are worried about and some don't realise.
Streetlife was fine as it just displayed your first name and initial of surname. Apparently the Americans aren't so concerned about their security. Ironic isn't it considering the state of affairs in the USA.

Nelliemoser Fri 10-Feb-17 15:49:18

Right! Giving the above opinions I am going to leave as well although so far I did enter my full name I balked at putting in my address for Nextdoor. I wanted to have a proper look at their site details.

I posted on streetlife as forname, and surname initial and it was useful. I live in a fairly small town and I not going to give them anymore information about me.
I wonder when, if you do migrate to Nextdoor, you will start getting adverts.

Ginny42 Fri 10-Feb-17 15:55:27

I decided to leave when the notice came, although I was lucky and had made some good friends through Streetlife. I will sorely miss the ease of getting help when things go wrong in the house.

Nelliemoser Fri 10-Feb-17 15:55:37

I am having a devil of ajob getting any sensible answers from Nextdoor's FAQs. The b*****S just have set primed responses on their FAQs that make it impossible to make the sort of comments you would wish to.
Off to cancel on Streetlife.
