Which room first?

Prompted by the thread about the current state of your kitchen, which room do you make for first when you get home? Which room do you take visitors to?

In our house, it's the kitchen as it is south facing and always warm and I love being in there. Plus the kettle (and the wine) is in there!

Nope to the kitchen.

I frisbee my handbag into the furthest corner and head upstairs for my bed (with a cup of tea), where I stretch out having kicked off shoes and tights, to collect my wits. Happy to hold court from there with anyone who wishes to consult with me. Emerge again when I'm ready.

Kitchen for us, a cup of tea and sit watching the birds and view of the garden. Everyone else usually does the same.

If I’ve left the heating on, straight through the kitchen to the conservatory, into the squishy sofas and whilst I prepare the wine and nibbles, guests can watch the birds, rabbits and deer eating my flowers and shrubs. grrrr.
If I’ve forgotten to turn the heat on I will hand you a comfy blanket on your way through......

Kitchen to make a brew , visitors are always entertained in the lounge.

gillybob Fri 23-Feb-18 08:14:24

I’ve got a squishy sofa in my dining room (sitting room upstairs so not always ideal for visitors ) so any visitor can relax in the dining room and talk to Alexa while I prepare a cuppa or a glass of wine in the next room.

Straight to the front room and my seat on the sofa. DH is in charge of hot beverages, so no diversion to the kitchen necessary. grin

Pittcity Fri 23-Feb-18 08:39:40

I have to walk through the front room (or lounge if you prefer) to get to the kitchen/diner, so usually plonk on the sofa first to sort myself out.

Greyduster Fri 23-Feb-18 08:47:15

Kitchen to make a drink of some sort usually and then the living room. Visitors and family seem to make straight for the conservatory, via the kitchen (where they are it encouraged to hang around!).

Greyduster Fri 23-Feb-18 08:47:47

NOT encouraged!

Willow500 Fri 23-Feb-18 08:48:04

Usually head straight through the living/dining room to the kitchen to put the kettle on and then to my desk to check my work mail - sadly we don't have visitors.

shysal Fri 23-Feb-18 08:58:02

Straight to the living room and open the French door for a while even in the dead of winter. Somebody told me that it was bad luck to go into one door and immediately open the other, but I am not superstitious.
I only have living room and tiny kitchen downstairs so guests have no choice. In the summer it is straight into the garden.

glammanana Fri 23-Feb-18 09:08:20

Straight through to the bedroom and take off coat and day clothes to change into PJs (always nice ones) and anyone can call then and be entertained to a brew & cupcake in the kitchen.

Teetime Fri 23-Feb-18 09:14:06

When its warm its the conservatory or the garden otherwise its the living room/dining room - kitchen is too small to squish into and no room for a table.

BlueBelle Fri 23-Feb-18 09:20:18

My kitchen thermometer is showing 8 degrees so definitely not the kitchen so always my main room ( living room, front room, lounge call it what you may) gas fire on and turned up for first five minutes then cosy can face anything after that first five minutes
Any guests or family straight into my warm room even in Summer I have never been a kitchen entertainer

GrandmaMoira Fri 23-Feb-18 09:20:30

I go straight to the living room and take visitors there. My kitchen is too small for guests.

TwiceAsNice Fri 23-Feb-18 09:25:46

My flats main room is a big open plan space. Living room to the left with patio doors to a balcony and kitchen/diner to the right so guests are ushered in to sit on a sofa and then can see me making them a drink at the other end of the room. Best of both worlds.

NanaandGrampy Fri 23-Feb-18 09:26:33

Our kitchen is too tiny for stopping in..its purely functional.

We would take visitors through to the orangery ( which is nearly finished, its bright, airy and has comfy chairs and a beautiful view.

grannyactivist Fri 23-Feb-18 09:34:15

I usually head straight for the utility room to let the dog out, pausing in the kitchen to flick the kettle on as I go past. Then, with a cup of tea in hand we head for the living room and settle down, me in my chair and the dog on his comfy bed.

Visitors have been known to let themselves in by the back door and appear, having made tea, in my living room, but usually they're ushered into the front room. All of my friends know their way around my kitchen and often tell me to go and sit whilst they make drinks. smile

merlotgran Fri 23-Feb-18 09:44:44

Our kitchen/diner/siting room is now open plan so it's straight to the kettle, having said hello to the dogs then if DH has lit the woodburner I curl up on the sofa with a cuppa.

Visitors plonk themselves wherever they like

Jalima1108 Fri 23-Feb-18 09:55:44

Somebody told me that it was bad luck to go into one door and immediately open the other, but I am not superstitious.
Apparently it's fine if you sit down in that room even if only for a few seconds shysal grin

Alexa Fri 23-Feb-18 11:11:08

To the back door whilst I say to the dog "do you want to go into the back garden?" then I stand back to avoid the headlong gallop. If any human is with me they answer "no thanks I'm all right" as they put the kettle on.

goldengirl Fri 23-Feb-18 11:32:03

Kitchen to dump my stuff and then feet up on the sofa that's falling to bits in the front room but is soooo comfy.
Visitors I tend to start in the kitchen and migrate to the sitting room which is generally the tidiest!!!

Maggiemaybe Fri 23-Feb-18 14:08:32

At least nobody's said yet that they head straight for the toilet (without the guests, of course!).

Kittye Fri 23-Feb-18 14:31:27

Always the kitchen. Kettle on and then sit around the table with a brew cafe
