That's Nice or is it Marvellous, Brilliant, Kind, Comforting, Pretty ....?

I was taught, both at Primary and Secondary School , to eschew the use of the word Nice which was lazy and to seek a more precise/appropriate descriptive adjective. Consequently, every use of the word on Gransnet Forums, leaps out at me and makes my hackles rise. The only time I use the word is sarcastically, as in 'That was nice of her' when in fact is was rude, upsetting, or belittling.

Anyone else?

Oops, thought I’d dropped into Pedants corner by mistake!

Still, nice to see that others have nothing better to do than correct our posts.

Pedants corner or not, that made me laugh Oopsadaisy3.

Oopsadaisy3 Thu 20-Feb-20 15:12:54

toscalily I’m normally a ‘nice’ person , but today I’m feeling a bit snippy.....

toscalily Thu 20-Feb-20 15:18:19

Must be the weather, I feel the same.

Oopsadaisy3 Thu 20-Feb-20 15:24:37

Possibly, the sun has come out now, it’s stopped raining and it’s really quite , um, delightful.

Well, not delightful, what’s the word I’m looking for?

BlueBelle Thu 20-Feb-20 15:53:54

Yes we too were to,d to not use nice as it was lazy and there were a lot better word I m sure I still use it though

Jane10 Thu 20-Feb-20 15:53:58

I'm not so much bothered by 'nice' but to my DGSs the only adjective is 'awesome' which drives me nuts!

lemongrove Thu 20-Feb-20 16:15:10

Most older people were told to use ‘nice’ sparingly when in school.....but so wot!
Nice had a different meaning two hundred years ago, but again...so wot!
It’s better than using OTT words to describe enjoying a scone and cuppa for instance.?

Goodness, I stopped worrying about what teacher would think about 40 years ago. smile Nice is a useful word, covers a lot of situations perfectly.

grannypiper Thu 20-Feb-20 16:40:27

JenniferEccles "Bloody marvellous"is my favourite discription

JenniferEccles Thu 20-Feb-20 17:08:40

phoenix Thu 20-Feb-20 17:09:25

How about "pleasant"?

GrannyGravy13 Thu 20-Feb-20 17:29:03

phoenix I find pleasant normally means unpleasant

Callistemon Thu 20-Feb-20 18:22:18

Oh dear - guilty of using it describe another Gransnetter the other day?‍♀️

blush
I did say I thought it was inadequate, I think

phoenix Thu 20-Feb-20 21:22:48

Grannygravy13 I suppose it depends on how/when used, for example "I met her husband, he seemed a pleasant chap" (better than "nice"?)

mrswoo Thu 20-Feb-20 21:47:39

I think nice is quite a nice word, actually. It has its uses but it’s nice to use another adjective from time to time.

M0nica Thu 20-Feb-20 21:48:23

Nothing wrong with using the word 'nice'. There are situations where it is the right word.

It's original meaning was 'precise' as in 'a nice difference' or 'nice and tidy'

M0nica Thu 20-Feb-20 21:49:58

I might add it these sweeping statements are the lazy thinking. nt the ability to know when and when not to use a word.

MissAdventure Thu 20-Feb-20 21:52:52

I like 'nice' very much, and I have never been told not to use it, so I have been, to describe all sorts of vaguely pleasant things.

Chewbacca Thu 20-Feb-20 22:08:31

Like Merlot I too always think of Mrs Brown and inwardly snigger! grin

Eloethan Thu 20-Feb-20 22:27:56

I expect we were all told at school that the word "nice" is unimaginative and bland. I use it sometimes though and think there are far more irritating words - "awesome", for example.

Callistemon Thu 20-Feb-20 22:31:37

I like the word nice.

But not Nice biscuits. Never did.

(Yes, I do know)

vampirequeen Thu 20-Feb-20 22:34:02

I like Nice biscuits. They're awesomely delicious (and very nice).
