What Are You Really Missing?

Just that really.

I know many of you will say the grandchildren, the hairdresser, going out for coffee et al.

I am missing the library. I managed to get 6 books out just before they closed, have spread them out as much as possible, but only a few chapters left of my last Robert Galbraith one, and dread finishing it as I will have to resort to ones on my bookshelf, you know the type, ones I bought and haven’t got into.

Oh well.....

??

Sorry, as for what I'm really missing- my terrible guilty pleasure of McDonalds ☹️ - I know, I know....?

The Sunday papers. No deliveries here. We used to drive to get them, call in at DD’s for coffee . Then home for lunch and an afternoon with the papers. One day all will come right .

The sea, theatre, going out to a restaurant, seeing my friends, going on holiday, freedom.

B9exchange Tue 12-May-20 20:10:30

Family first of course. But the ability to book and look forward to a holiday. The hospice job that I lost when lockdown started. Cinema and restaurant trips with friends.
And as others have said, the feeling that we can go out and do what we enjoy when we want!

I was the last customer in our Library ,the librarian let me in even though she should have been locking the door, i grabbed 10 books because that is all i could carry. i have read them and have now had to give in and buy a kindle and i hate to say it but i love it and my wrist feels so much better now i am not holding heavy books

My favourite farm shop cafe.Going there for brunch at the weekends is a favourite treat.
Our local fish and chip shop.Don't get them often but when we do they're really good.
Our cat. After 17 years had to have him put to sleep the other day.And our DDs were all upset too and we couldn't have a family hug and be together.I've been coping fine up until this but on a wobble today.

What I am missing is being in control of my own life. After years of Paw’s health issues dominating our lives I had only in the last two years become aware of my “freedom” to make my own decisions -well mostly.
90% of the time it makes no difference but just every now and then I am brought up short by realising that “No, I can’t do that any more”
Just that really.

I’m missing work, being part of something successful and the lovely people.

I miss driving my lovely car , spontaneous trips out , especially to Oxford for a mooch . I’m not sure it would count as an open space for exercise?

Meals out on Sundays .

Once a month Friday pub night with friends from the village .

My family.

I was a prolific shopper,I cannot believe how little I have missed it.I am hoping I never shop as much again ,my Bank Account looks much healthier.

Missing my FREEDOM ?
Meals out, sick to death of preparing meals.
Sitting in our favourite Italian cafe drinking delicious coffee and listening to the smooth jazz in the background.
Anticipation of the 4 short hols we had booked.
Theatre trips.
Outdoor productions and a delicious picnic.
Having fun with our 2 grandsons.
The list goes on.

I recommend the Libby app which allows library withdrawals of online and audible books to your phone. Free and fantastic.

Calendargirl Wed 13-May-20 11:10:53

Thanks to all who have suggested alternatives to going to the library.
I have now got the Libby app, not gone through it very thoroughly, but obviously everyone else in my area has the same idea!
But really miss just wandering round the library, browsing, seeing which books others have just brought back, feeling excited to spot a good one.....

My life is probably a bit humdrum I know.

I also miss the swimming and aquacise, but enjoy the freedom of feeling you can be at home without feeling you should be doing things. So I then don’t feel guilty about burying myself in a good book.

Just 'normal' life, really. Miss my weekly wandering round the fish and meat market, speaking to the ladies who are buying goats legs, etc. and getting recipes from them, miss calling into"Mr.Chatterteeth"s second hand bookshop and buying there, miss not sitting in the Cathedral Gardens while I'm sorting out my shopping, miss my neighbours(both have since died[sad}, miss my cleaner!, miss not seeing the little children walking to school...
BUT! loving my online shopping, love 'chatting"and sharing 'stuff' with my family in the US, and with my great friend who's stuck in France with zero chance of returning to the UK for the forseeable future...
Swings and balances, I've a LOT to be thankful for...

Happybumblebee I hadnt had a MacDonalds for some years but today when we were out shopping there was one next to the shop we went to. Well DH was doing the shopping as I am not allowed due to chemo treatment. For some reason I thought I would like one. After we had finished shopping DH asked if I still wanted one and we went through the "drive thru" . All I can say is it will be years before I try another one. Everything was luke warm and tasteless. What a waste of €10.50.

I'm not missing anything other than the little ones - just want to hug them.
But I am enjoying the freedom from routine - I can postpone doing things because there's so much time now. There's no urgency about anything.
P.S. if you're bored, do google "Virtual Tours" - you can go to places from your armchair - I've been to The Louvre, the WTC museum , the Hermitage etc etc. Great stuff !!

As mentioned in my previous post my life had already become more isolated before the virus arrived so not much I particularly miss except maybe being able to go to the supermarket which has a very good butchery department to choose my own meat. DH does his best but my request for 1kg of fillet steak in one piece has brought everything but. Although I have now written it down in Portuguese so he can just hand it to the butcher and hopefully we will have success..

Elrel Thu 14-May-20 00:37:00

The Library. Poetry Open Mic evenings. My family most of all.
This too will pass.

Blinko Thu 14-May-20 06:26:31

Eating out with friends, travelling into Birmingham on the tram for a mooch and meeting with old office colleagues for a catch up, playing bridge.

OTOH, with not eating out I've reached my target weight at Slimming World and am quite enjoying the peace, clearer skies, time with OH, more facetime with family, neat garden.

Blessings, I'm counting them cafe smile

Blinko Thu 14-May-20 06:27:48

Nice to see you, Elrel. Hope you're ok?

gillybob Thu 14-May-20 06:54:54

My darling little Evie and her 3 older cousins. My son and daughter .

Nothing else really .

NfkDumpling Thu 14-May-20 07:06:59

Freedom.

merlotgran Thu 14-May-20 08:35:28

My Sis-IL asked if I'd be the first in the queue at our local garden centre when it opens today but DH is shielding so I'm going to have to be patient until we're all let out of solitary.

On that glorious day, trap and greyhound will spring to mind! grin
