Anyone remember their school motto? Ours was 'Gentleness and Justice'. Not sure I lived up to that.

‘Liberae Scholae De Comune Sigilum’

Free School with a Public Seal.

Ashcombe Sat 26-Sep-20 07:33:07

Este fidelis- Be faithful!

Awwww a public seal how nice. Your school must have had a pool then Calendargirl?
If I had a personal motto I think it would be the Nike one - 'Just do it'!

Per ardua ad astra.
Through adversity to the stars.
I haven't thought about that for a very long time!

Crikey, you all went to posh schools. My London comprehensive had nothing. sad I've just checked the school's website and they recently introduced a modern sounding "learning through realising potential."

Per ardua ad astra
Grandmabatty That belongs to the RAF! grin

Family mottos are much more revealing.

Ours is; "Bona Side Fine Fraude"

The primary school I worked in had a motto, Laborare est orare, which has always appealed to me and fits my own values. ☺️

Sic itur ad Astra. Thus the way to the stars.

DillytheGardener Sat 26-Sep-20 08:33:55

Gaudeamus "Let us rejoice" a rather nice one I think!

Lexisgranny Sat 26-Sep-20 08:35:21

Abesque labore nihil - Without work nothing/ nothing without work..........how true!

fiorentina51 Sat 26-Sep-20 09:03:53

I went to a bog standard Catholic Secondary Mod school our motto was/still is, "Semper Fidelis". Always or Ever Faithful.

Alexa Sat 26-Sep-20 09:21:29

"EL James (Fifty Shades of Grey) went to my school! grin" Was the motto "Love Conquers All" ?

Alexa Sat 26-Sep-20 09:22:53

"Without work nothing/ nothing without work"

No landed aristocrats there then!

Greyduster Sat 26-Sep-20 09:23:47

Our school didn’t have a motto, but our regimental motto when I was in the Army was “Suaviter in modo, fortiter in re”. Gentle in manner; resolute in deed. I have tried to live up to it.

Alexa Sat 26-Sep-20 09:24:14

My first school if |I remember right "They shall soar like eagles".

Alexa Sat 26-Sep-20 09:25:14

Greyduster, what a super motto!

Lexisgranny Sat 26-Sep-20 09:35:12

Alexa actually there were a few, don’t know what they made of it! I don’t know that the encouragement to work particularly influenced me, I was more a “swot like mad the night before” sort of girl, who used up more than her fair share of luck whilst taking exams.

Lexisgranny Sat 26-Sep-20 09:46:54

Sorry Alexa misread your post, no aristocrats, but a few with families who owned a lot of land.

Persta atque Obdura - Be Steadfast and Endure
Has popped into my mind a few times over the years when the proverbial hit the fan.

Sarahmob Sat 26-Sep-20 10:07:42

The school I supply teach for has “sic itur ad Astra” which means “Thus one journeys to the stars” which I think is lovely.

Grandmabatty Sat 26-Sep-20 10:08:25

Rufus2 I am an absolute numpty!! ☺. I knew it was something Latin and that sounded familiar. What an idiot. I apologise to any in the RAF. My school motto, having had to check, is Optimum sequii. Follow the best.

Ailidh Sat 26-Sep-20 10:13:14

I don't remember my school having a motto but the theological college I attended had "Guard the Deposit" (i.e. of faith) stamped on all its historical (and no longer used) pottery, including, allegedly, the chamberpots. This may have been apocryphal.....

annodomini Sat 26-Sep-20 10:15:00

Ad Astra, to the stars. We missed out on the 'per ardua' bit - perhaps we didn't fancy hardship.

avitorl Sat 26-Sep-20 10:20:57

Bien faire et laissez dire, Good work, less talk. Quite a good motto to follow but there was always lots of chatter going on between us girls and not so much hard work.

Ellianne Sat 26-Sep-20 10:34:13

I like this thread. All these mottos seem very inspirational, rather than over heavy, which fits my view that pupils can be led to succeed but not driven to achieve.
