Anyone remember their school motto? Ours was 'Gentleness and Justice'. Not sure I lived up to that.

Ours was "Nord et Fier"

Awwww a public seal how nice. Your school must have had a pool then Calendargirl?
If I had a personal motto I think it would be the Nike one - 'Just do it'!

I never saw a seal when I was there, and he wasn’t swimming in the school swimming pool, sadly filled in nowadays as too expensive to maintain!

Seriously, the school opened in the 1500’s, and the seal must relate to that.

I suppose school mottos became like the 1980s 'mission statements' which we all seemed to have to dream up after lengthy focus groups and meetings. I've forgotten them all but do remember the school motto.

My husband always sings his school song, after a few drinks, with old school friends! How pompous to have a song!

The school I taught in for most of my career has a school song. The memorable line is, 'for the school we do or die.' ?

Ours was 'Strive to Achieve' - if strive means to struggle I'd say that life at times has certainly been that. Sadly, not a huge amount of achievement.

My school would have chosen "School's out, school's been blown to pieces." (Alice Cooper.
Full of rebels! grin

We had a school song 'Forty Years On,' which we nicked from Harrow School.

These days the last verse brings tears to my eyes.

Fortitor fideliter feliciter
- bravely faithfully cheerfully.
I can remember being given the class prefect badge and being told,
"I give you this badge in trust and believe that you will serve the school bravely, faithfully and cheerfully."
I then had to clean it every few days with "duraglit".

Mine was pretty toe curling - I am, I can, I ought, I will, therefore I'm not, I can't, I shan't, I wont, ???

InterestinglyEllianne whenI met my husband (almost the Swinging Sixties) it turned out he lived near the school and all the local boys knew of the motto, you can guess the comments....

Semper Fidelis ( always faithful) in primary.

In Necessariis Unitas, In Omnibus Caritas, In Dubiis Libertas.
(Unity in need, charity in all things, freedom in doubt ) in secondary.

Until this thread started I didn't know that schools had mottos. Ours certainly didn't.

My Catholic Girls’ Grammar School was Vitae Via Virtus (Virtue is the way of Life). My mum had kept my school blazer, which I now have in my wardrobe. No idea why I’m still keeping it.

Auntieflo Sat 26-Sep-20 15:26:31

I knew my school had a motto, but couldn't remember it.
( it was a looong time ago that I left)

So I looked it up and there appears to be two?

Jubilate Deo
and
Let your light shine.

Is that odd, or what?

Elegran Sat 26-Sep-20 15:35:11

Be strong and very courageous!

Grandma70s Sat 26-Sep-20 15:46:43

Mine was Non Nobis Sed Omnibus, “Not for ourselves but for all”.

Grandma70s Sat 26-Sep-20 15:51:57

My grandson’s school motto is God’s Gift. I always think it’s just as well it isn’t on their blazer badge.

Niobe Sat 26-Sep-20 16:03:09

My school’s motto was “Non Scholae sed Vitae Discimus” which translates as
“We Learn for Life not for School”.

First school “Digna Sequens” - following worthy things.
Second school “Garde Ta Foy” - keep your faith. Should have been “Garde Ton Foie” look after your liver.

Ours was "In God is all our trust", and we used to get beer money once a year from our trustees!
