What would you buy/do?

When someone wins a large amount of money on the Lottery, Camelot advises them to take time to get over the shock. They've also discovered that people who have always struggled or been careful with money (which is most of us) find it difficult to spend more than they're used to...almost a sense of guilt. So Camelot advise them to buy themselves something (not gifts for others) that they would never have dreamed of buying in the past. This is to get them used to the idea that they can spend money on themselves and not just on others.

If you won the lottery and followed this advice what would you buy/do? Remember it can't be gifts for others. It has to be for you or you and your partner.

That's exactly what my daughter and I would do MagicWriter2016 we would have donkeys as well. Lovely dreams

MagicWriter2016 Tue 13-Oct-20 20:46:18

A purpose built rescue for cats and dogs, with its own on site vet and lots of staff to look after them all. Then I could just be a sort of Paul O’Grady and get all the fusses and cuddles while my staff did all the hard work ?

I love your dream. May it come to fruition xx

I'd buy myself the car I've always wanted - an open top. DH doesn't like them but I've always wanted one!

I don’t want to move again, and am happy where we are, but a holiday home by the sea would be lovely, as would a stylish and expensive car. Then (I don’t want much!?) a few stylish and expensive clothes. After that, it would be helping family and friends and favourite charities. What a lovely dream.
Better start buying a lottery ticket.

I'd have my kitchen extended at the back of my cottage. A lovely big kitchen diner, cottagey style.

A light and airy detached house with a south facing flat garden. It would be within walking distance of a village which would have lots of individual shops, some restaurants and a couple of friendly old fashioned pubs-at least one with a bowling green - for DH.
We actually live within driving distance of possible village but it would be so lovely just to walk there.

Lorelei I really enjoyed reading your detailed post of how you’d spent your fortune!

hereshoping Mon 12-Oct-20 08:14:37

I would buy a very large pale blue sapphire ring. I'm not one for wearing jewellery , so I doubt if I'd wear it very often, but that's what I want.
Then I 'd organise a holiday in a very large house for our family.

BBbevan Mon 12-Oct-20 06:27:07

I would get DD and DS and their families sorted first, Trust funds for the GCs, house, car, money etc for the adults. Then DH and I would go around the world. Cruise perhaps but interrupted by longer stays in interesting places. We don’t need much but DH would love a canvas topped Jeep Wrangler. We had one once but gave it up as it was expensive to run

If the win was a huge jackpot one I'd buy the dream small-holding with a fair bit of land attached. It would have to have a main building like a decent size farmhouse or barn conversion + at least 2 other buildings suitable for residential use. My better half would like all sorts of animals, but if dreams could come true he'd have a few alpacas and llamas so that they could 'hum' to him every morning. There would be plenty of garage space, barns, sheds, workshops, a forge, a mill and scope to build anything else the pair of them decided they'd need to make things, do the restoration projects they've been thinking about. There would be some woodland areas, maybe a small river/stream, where we could set up a woodland guardians group to teach skills and provide a safe environment for groups of people that would benefit from time with nature, with animals (e.g. kids that have been abused, people with mental health problems, people with disabilities, homeless, recovering addicts, rehab after serous injury or PTSD). I would also love to have the funds so that my better half and his business partner could head of to Alaska or the Klondike and spend 6-months- a year gold mining, diving and/or dredging for gold. I'd miss them terribly but if I was ever in a position to help them live their dreams I'd be happy to give them everything they needed to have a great experience - I'd even throw in a motorhome so they could travel in comfort or be OK 'on site'. They'd also get driving experiences, flying lessons and things like trips in Spitfires, going to space for zero-gravity etc - with a big enough win they could buy the car/plane/helicopter once qualified. They'd want other toys like drones, ride-on lawnmowers (for the bits not naturally 'cut' by the horses and other grazing animals.

One residential unit would be for my better half's business partner /friend - at present he'd be happy with a log cabin/small 1-bed place, but I'd like to future-proof for him just in case he ever gets a partner or decides to marry or ends up with a child or several children. A stable block would be a high priority for him and the rest of us would quite like that too, complete with stalls, tack room, shower room, boot room + a paddock, grazing fields and all the equipment needed to care for the horses and ride them safely

The other building would be so that our current neighbour could become our new neighbour - she has always dreamed of living on a small holding, having horses and the space, time and money to be able to rescue animals and provide suitable forever homes for them. Sure she'd be welcome to share the stable facilities and to have at least one horse of her own. Her place would need to be minimum 2-bed, preferably 3 so her grandson and his family could come to stay with her. If there was scope to have a few buildings as 'holiday lets' or as part of a business her grandson could stay there if she had a smaller home.

I don't need that much for myself - room in the house to have a library (built by a master carpenter - the men could help) with parquet flooring, hard-wood floor-to-ceiling bookcases, wood-panelled walls, lovely big desk, choice of comfy chairs. lamps, rugs, tapestries, office space well stocked with good quality stationery and I'd spend a lot of my time in there while they built things, made things, spent time on their various hobbies.

All 3 of the aforementioned people + a few family members & friends would be treated too. It may sound like a large chunk of 'my' winnings would be spent on others but it's not really all for them, I already require a fair bit of care and this will increase as time goes on. It would benefit me greatly having them all there, give me all the personal care and general help I need + the money would enable me to buy in help when I needed it or they were away for a bit. Buying them all a new car would mean reliable transport and the likelihood of at least one of them being around to give me a lift if I ever have to go anywhere or need to be taken in to hospital

The cats would be spoiled rotten, with beds, scratch posts, secret catflaps to get around the house. I'd pay the guys to custom-make homes, fencing, etc for all the animals we'd get - bespoke bird boxes, bird baths, bat boxes, hedgehog houses, bee hotels, insect hotels. Making a lot of the furniture for the new homes would keep them busy and use all their new buildings and equipment. I'd end up with a house built from love by the people closest to me and also have them as my closest neighbours. I'd be happy and think we could all live there happily together.

Please excuse any rambling and/or typos - had a rough night and not slept yet! Interesting idea for a thread

Definitely a small country cottage with lovely walks from the door.
I also must agree with fevertree about the cleaner. I can't bend to do bath these days! I love a bath full of bubbles.

M0nica Sun 11-Oct-20 21:58:12

I have often fantasised about renting a serviced flat at the Savoy. No need to even think about cleaners etc they are part of the deal, and all the services of a 5 star hotel at the lift of a phone.

I could then go up to London regularly to visit museums and exhibition and not worry about getting home on late trains. DH and I could go to any opera or concert that took our fancy before spending the night in our serviced flat. I could even join The London Library. I would also like to have an account at Libertys. To be able to look at the beautiful clothes, textiles furniture etc and if I see anything I like just say....' - and charge it to my account'.

Shocked by all these private jets! Have you not been listening to David Attenborough? I'm tempted by the Morgan, though that's hardly ecologically sound either, and the swimming pools. What I'd really like is a home in Tuscany, south of Siena and the magical means of getting there without having a huge carbon footprint. Flying carpet maybe?

kittylester Sun 11-Oct-20 20:59:35

We have a walled garden!! The garden in very, very tiny but it has a wall round it.

123kitty Sun 11-Oct-20 20:51:52

Travel round the Greek islands for a year with a local guide.

JadeOlivia Sun 11-Oct-20 20:50:21

I would start with a yellow diamond, an Aston Martin and employ a nutritionist and coach. I would then buy a rooftop apartment in Rome.....

JackyB Sun 11-Oct-20 20:42:30

No dreams of my own really. But on reading this thread I think I'll open an agency for training and hiring out top class chauffeurs and housekeepers.

Ngaio1 Sun 11-Oct-20 20:37:35

A house with enough land and stables for rescue horses and dogs, to have a good life.

GrauntyHelen Sun 11-Oct-20 19:59:03

A villa in Puerto Pollensa Mallorca I know just which one Iwant

Starblaze Sun 11-Oct-20 19:32:40

A walled garden is literally the dream for me too actually.

I'm getting so many daydreams from this thread lol

Grannynannywanny Sun 11-Oct-20 19:31:48

Depends what size of a jackpot we’re talking. Top of the list would be a new roof so I can remove the buckets from the attic.
If we can’t include a family share out in this then I’d say I’ll treat myself to a luxury camper van. I fantasise about owning one.
If we’re talking mega jackpot I’d park my camper van alongside a lovely big house in the countryside with plenty of spare rooms for visitors. A cleaner and a gardener.

stewaris Sun 11-Oct-20 19:29:07

A walled garden. Don't ask me why but it has been one of my lifelong dreams. We missed a house with a walled garden - couldn't afford the house but DH put his foot down about living in a caravan in the walled garden. Some people have no sense of adventure! Ho hum

sweetcakes Sun 11-Oct-20 19:04:31

I would like to go shopping and not have to look at every price tag before I maybe bought it!!

Grandmafrench Sun 11-Oct-20 18:49:20

Dee1012

I'd buy a rural property with some land and follow my dream...set up a 'doggy hospice' for those animals in kennels and rescue centres who are near the end of their lives.

A wonderful ‘dream’ to follow...just like Mike and Leeanne did with their Twilight home in Dordogne, France.
