Things your mother said that you never believed when you were younger.

I remember when I was younger my mum telling me to tuck my top into my trousers because I'd get a draught. Then I ignored her because it didn't matter, I didn't feel the cold. But now I find myself tucking my vest in- and it is warmer. Has your mother ever turned out to be right about things?

Haven't worn a vest since I was about 10 ?

Oh buy a thermal one they are fantastic (although I don't believe they call them vests anymore just tops-but its the one next to your skin!)

I have a couple of very old, holey t-shirts with lycra, they fit like a glove and I always wear one underneath, blissful.

My mum used to say ‘your name will go far further than your feet ever will’. And of course, she was right. I repeat it frequently.

Yes, I never believed either that washing my hair or taking a bath during my period would do me any harm, but I did as I was told until I left home.

My mother also said I would never be good at playing the piano or cooking. She was wrong on both counts.

However, she said a lot of other things that were right, but I realised that at the time.

It's Grannie's dictums that have come home to roost here, especially, "Have a place for everything, and everything in its place." That one really has made my life easier after I adopted it. So has doing household repairs immediately!

My knees are hurting because the weather is going to change - oh yes Mum, I get it now!

Daughter 2 gave me a coaster some time back- and it says 'sometimes I open my mouth, and my mother comes out' - lol, so true.

I had to wear a vest and a bodice! Does anyone else remember them?

Redhead56 Thu 03-Dec-20 11:27:13

Yes there was a discussion about liberty bodice last week. I wore one in the 60s it was very bulky.

I was always told, when there was a thunderstorm, it was the old woman who lived in heaven moving her furniture round and putting the lights on. I never believed a word of it!
I'm still scared of thunderstorms.

AuntyFlo, did you have my piano teacher? I too was whacked over the knuckles with a ruler for looking at my hands when playing. And she had the most awful BO too!

lizzypopbottle Thu 03-Dec-20 11:52:22

Sorry, haven't read them all:

If the wind changes, your face will stick like that!

Lulubelle500 Thu 03-Dec-20 11:54:26

Yes, 'This too shall pass'. It was one of my mothers favourite expressions when any of us were having a bad time. And over the years I've found it to be true.

Lilikemaho Thu 03-Dec-20 11:58:11

Oh my God I was told the same thing was also told stay away from boys

Lilikemaho Thu 03-Dec-20 11:59:50

That was in reply to funnygran

lovebeigecardigans1955 Thu 03-Dec-20 12:03:38

Our mum said the same Funnygran but we told her it was an old wives tale so she said, "Oh, all right then," and let us get on with it.

She didn't give much advice as she let us make our own mistakes but one thing she said was, "Your sins will find you out," which I took as meaning that they'll rise up to bite you.

Auntieflo Thu 03-Dec-20 12:13:26

B9exchange, no, my piano teacher was male!
I would so love to be able to make music now.

icanhandthemback Thu 03-Dec-20 12:13:55

My mother changed her tune to suit the way the wind blew (or the other way just to be contentious) so I never listened to her if I could help it!

sazz1 Thu 03-Dec-20 12:23:22

Wrap up warm or you will catch a cold.
Scientists have found now we're more likely to catch infections with a cold mouth and nose than with a warm mouth and nose. Apparently germs attach and multiply faster to cold facial areas.

Urmstongran Thu 03-Dec-20 12:24:49

Wearing masks outside in winter then to keep us warm might become a ‘thing’!

Dottynan Thu 03-Dec-20 13:01:21

"Dad where is such and such". It was always up in Granny's room behind the clock

BBbevan Thu 03-Dec-20 13:09:20

My mother told me I was never to show a man my shoulders !!. No other parts were mentioned. This has caused me a lot of problems over the years.

trisher Thu 03-Dec-20 13:26:40

Bbevan grin I wish there was a laugh out loud emoji.

grandMattie Thu 03-Dec-20 13:34:44

If you play with matches in the evening, you’ll wet your bed. I did regardless.
