NeilYoung concerts here in Germany absolutely brilliant . Lovely reminiscing .

Sarnia Sat 13-Feb-21 09:12:54

The Beatles in 1963.
The Rolling Stones in 1963. The proper Rolling Stones with Brian Jones, not later imitations!
Several other 'lesser' 60's groups like the Merseybeats.
Later in life 4 concerts by Prodigy. Just not the same since Keith Flint's death.sad

If I see the word festival I think classical, not pop. There were classical festivals well before there were pop ones. Aldeburgh, Cheltenham, Edinburgh among others. Am I alone in this?

I know this isn’t the point of this thread, but the assumptions really irritate me.

How amazing that you guys have seen some of the world's biggest Legends.
I have seen quite a few as well, but we are all so lucky.
I'm still sitting on Tickets for Michael Buble and The Killers for this summer, doubt they will be on tho?

NotAGran55 Sat 13-Feb-21 09:48:30

Grandma70s why don’t you start us off with a classical thread - these type of threads are great fun smile

I have one ☝️ concert that I could contribute .

Kate1949 Sat 13-Feb-21 09:54:59

Visgirl. I don't know if you've seen him before but DO try to see Michael Buble no matter how long you have to wait.
We saw him about two years ago. What a showman. He puts on an amazing show. He involves the audience. He has amazing musicians. We were lucky enough to be so close we could have touched him (I resisted grin ). My husband wasn't really a fan but he is now!

The Who performed at a university student ball back in the 60s.
I’m not sure we realised at the time just how lucky we were!

The only other ones were bands like The Searchers, long after their heydays. When we were living in the Middle East in the 1980s several of these would perform at a dinner/concert round a hotel swimming pool.
So we’d have a table with friends. Some of these were the best nights out ever.

There were also ‘dinner/theatre’ nights, same idea only inside, when West End plays would come out on tour. Saw some brilliant ones - nearly always comedies - with some star actors. I still remember Leslie Phillips in one of them - merely by raising an eyebrow he brought the house down.

Billy Connelly once came on such a tour - alas we were too late to get tickets. An almost instant sell-out.

It was so refreshing to be part of Stones concert 50 years on!
A cursory look around us showed us hearing aids, walking sticks, the odd frame - brilliant!
As heartwarming was the lad of about 10 of 11 with his mum, having the time of his life.

Jaxjacky Sat 13-Feb-21 10:10:46

Visgirl we too have Killers rescheduled.

Anniebach Sat 13-Feb-21 10:16:10

I have only been to jazz festivals,

baubles Sat 13-Feb-21 10:16:46

I’ve never been to a festival other than Proms in the Park, does that count?

Lots of live music though starting with Free, sixteen year old me thought Paul Kossoff was the most beautiful man I’d ever seen. Walked into Glasgow Apollo and bought tickets at the door to see Elton John in the early 70s. Saw him again years later at Hamden Park

Some others were
Paul Simon
Lady smith Black Mambazo - just them after seeing them with Paul Simon.
Chris Rea
Brian Ferry
Peter Gabriel
Dire Straits
James Taylor
Leonard Cohen
Eric Clapton
Rod Stewart
Gerry Rafferty
Bruce Springsteen

The Dubliners (an impromptu session in the mens’ dormitory on the overnight sailing from Glasgow to Dublin)
The Chieftains
Imelda May

Kate Rusby
Beth Nielsen Chapman
Eddie Reader
Mary Chaplin Carpenter
K.d. Lang
Jules Holland and his band several times.

Phil Cunningham and Aly Bain plus too many to recall at Celtic Connections.

I’m also a huge ballet and opera fan so I’ve seen many, many live performances over the years.

baubles Sat 13-Feb-21 10:18:45

I know there are lots of others I can’t recall at the moment. I have a load of tickets in a box somewhere.

NotAGran55 Sat 13-Feb-21 10:19:29

Ixion my mum introduced me to the Stones . She called me into the sitting room and made me watch them perform Little Red Rooster.

I have been told that I look like Ronnie Wood and as I currently have a large (3.8cm diameter) gallstone I have named it Ronnie smile

trisher Sat 13-Feb-21 10:29:55

The Searchers
The Who (2)
The Stones
Tyrannasurus Rex (Marc Bolan and Steve Took before they became T.Rex) Reading?
Beach Boys (2)
Doctor Hook
Dr Feelgood
Hawkwind
David Bowie
Robert Plant
Alan Price

NotAGran55 Sat 13-Feb-21 10:30:18

Baubles I agree about Paul Kossoff! . I wonder if we saw them on the same tour ? They were supporting The Who and we were told it was their debut tour and that David Kossoff was there in the audience at the Adelphi in Slough.

NotAGran55 Sat 13-Feb-21 10:34:09

Just remembered a few more :

Bryan Adams several times
Fleetwood Mac
Chris Rea
The Tremeloes - Chip Hawkes lived in our village and I held Chesney in my arms when he was a baby ?. (his gran brought him into the village shop where I worked)

BigBertha1 Sat 13-Feb-21 10:34:38

Too many to mention but probably as many classical concerts as rock so I'll juts do the stand out memorable ones for me.

Rock Eric Clapton at the Albert Hall

Classical Andre Previn playing Rhapsody in Blue at the Festival Hall.

J52 Sat 13-Feb-21 11:07:20

Being a teenager in West London in the late 60s, too many to mention. We used to buy Time Out and NME on a Friday sit in the 6th form common room and plan our Saturday nights.
Free were a local group, my BIL was at school with Andy Fraser.
In 1969 my first Festival was The Isle of Wight to see Bob Dylan, still got the photos.
When I was at Uni. The student Union paid £40 for an unknown group called Queen to play at the summer ball. We all knew they were destined to go far.

Scentia Sat 13-Feb-21 11:09:37

A gig that sits firmly in my mind is watching the Stranglers and Darkness on the beach in St Tropez it was scorching hot, dark and as you looked out to sea the luxury Yachts had all dropped anchor to get a free gig.

Scentia Sat 13-Feb-21 11:11:31

The last gig I went to was to watch Steve Hackett and it was here I really learned what good music sounded and felt like under my feet❤️

monk08 Sat 13-Feb-21 11:38:07

Worked at Birmingham town hall late 60s and early 70s. Lots of lovely memories but the most unforgettable performance was from Emerson Lake and Palmer they played the town halls organ it was breathtaking.

muse Sat 13-Feb-21 12:25:28

1960s': Very little money. All gigs had to be a short bus ride away so main place was Buxton Opera House, Derbyshire:
Hollies, Walker Brothers, Tremeloes.

Didn't do much gigging till I was 50 and then, with many thanks to my gig buddy:
Muse - a few times - best one was at Wembley
Elbow - lots - best one at Eden Project, Cornwall
Snow Patrol - lots - in mosh pit too.
Alison Moyet
Squeeze
Mike and the Mechanics
Will Young - a few times
Doves
Foals
Goldfrapp
Joan Armatrading - as many times as possible
Steve Winwood
....and quite a few local bands.
