Which actors do you consider over rated?

Flicking through channels last night I came across an actor who I think is vastly over rated and I can't understand those who think he is talented. I am talking about Mandy Patinkin. His movements are wooden, he rarely speaks with any inflection and has only one expression - miserable, even when trying to smile!

Jude Law.
Tom Hardy (just why??)
Brad Pitt.

RulaNula

Not a fan of Suranne Jones either.

There's a chap who used to be in everything. Some antique thing. A drama.

Some people found him attractive but I never did.

Can I remember his name?

No I can't

Ian McShane? He was Lovejoy, then he went all tough in some American drama. He also played the devil in a film with Cher.

Keira Knightley! Beautiful face but one of the worst actresses I`ve ever seen. Plank of wood.

Can't stand Keira Knightley and IMHO she can't act. Love David Tennant, Nicola Walker, Richard Armitage ( brilliant in Uncle Vanya) Anne Reid and I am liking Morven Christie in The Bay

RulaNula ,Lorriane kelly isn't an actress, she started as a reporter and went onto presenting .
I'm not a fan either to be honest but you cant say the same about her as you would an actress who is being paid to play different roles ...IMO

Timothy Spaull, just hated how he grunted through the film based on J.M.W.Turner.

Someone mentioned Brian Blessed. I agree. I can't stand that booming, over-the-top voice. He obviously thinks it's amusing.

I thought David Tennant was really good in the TV film "Des", a factual account of a serial killer, so would disagree with his name in the list.
My main gripe is when several women are cast who are often similar in height, build and hair style/colour so I am constantly getting them mixed up.
I do have an appointment with an optician next week which may help though.

I think Martin Clunes is very overrated as well and just plays himself. I used to think the same about Neil Morrissey but I saw him in a stage play of Rain Man, he played Raymond and was outstanding with huge amounts of complicated dialogue to remember. He got a standing ovation and it changed my opinion of him. He was type cast as a pretty boy but as he aged he was given different opportunities and proved he was amore than able actor.

Jaffacake2 Tue 23-Feb-21 09:51:08

Peter O Toole was awful actor as he aged. Went to see him play Macbeth at Bristol theatre and people just laughed when he said his opening speech, completely hammed it !! Most of the audience walked out by the interval .

I so agree! (MM)

In the past she would have been referred to as a starlet.

Rowsie Tue 23-Feb-21 09:47:41

Hugh Grant! He is the stupid upper class twit in every film he has been in. Having said that he seems to have got better as he gets older and has done some half decent roles lately.

vira70 Tue 23-Feb-21 07:36:50

Brenda Blethyn with that same whiny voice in everything she plays...Amanda Holden up her own backside....Lorraine Kelly soo false...Danny Dyer soo rough how did he get that game show ...Tracy Solomon and that boyfriend of her’s can’t even speak the Queens English.....I could go on ...how do they get these jobs ..

grannybuy Mon 22-Feb-21 23:37:43

Funnily enough, whenever I saw the title of the thread, Danny Dyer was the name that came into my head. I"m in good company.

Skallagrigg Mon 22-Feb-21 22:28:06

Mandy Patinkin also thought he could sing? If you think his acting is bad perhaps you should have a listen.

NellG Mon 22-Feb-21 21:28:55

Lily James, is there anything she isn't in these days? Girl must be exhausted.

Riverdaffyd Mon 22-Feb-21 21:24:05

Meghan Markle springs immediately to mind.

Oh, I disagree with Judi Dench, Olivia Coleman and Nicola Walker; I think they are all wonderful actors! When I was watching Last Tango in Halifax I wondered why Sarah Lancashire was getting all the hype! As British actors they were unknown to me (NW & SL), I had to look up their other work.

I will agree with others on Tom Cruise, I could never see the draw. Most of his movies are only watchable because of the action and special effects.

I think so many actors do get type-cast and can really only widen their range if they can afford it! But if you keep getting offered millions to play a certain type, most would be hard pressed to say no.

I agree about Olivia Coleman and Judy Dench. Also the girl who used to be in Coronation Street Whose name i cant remember. She gets lots of work and is the same in everything. She played Raquel in Corrie.

Sarah Lancashire.

Lizbethann55 Mon 22-Feb-21 20:23:54

A truly good actor is one who can play different characters and "become " that character. There are too many "one trick ponies" out there. You can almost hear the casting directors saying "oh we need such and such a character, I know we will use him / her , they do that so well". Most soap actors just happen to be in the right place at the right time. A high school near me seems to provide most of Corrie's teenagers, regardless of their acting skill. There are also many lazy casting directors who use the same pool of actors over and over again, until the viewer is sick of them. David Tenant and Olivia Coleman are two of them. Lily James is really reaching saturation point. So many soap and continuing dramas use the same casting agencies so many actors just do the rounds of all these shows without ever proving themselves as actually being any good. But my real pet hate, who I absolutely always turn the tele off when he is on, is Danny Dyer. I cannot abide him or his "I'm an oh so tough cockney geyser " voice.?

Tom Cruise, a strange man, and a wooden actor. Used to adore Richard Gere, have seen error of my ways and now think he’s rubbish! Always had a soft spot for Hugh Grant. Good comedy actor and was fabulous as Jeremy Thorpe.

Seems to me they are all same old same old. I agree Judi Dench is always the same . Directors probably choose someone who is going to pull in the viewers because of the name. It’s about time someone else had a chance !

Witzend Mon 22-Feb-21 19:03:05

OTOH....

I seem to remember reading a story about the young Alec Guinness. Someone in the business who’d seen him in (IIRC) Kind Hearts and Coronets, enthusiastically told someone else in the business that he really must go and see this young actor.

So that person did. And afterwards told the other that he hadn’t thought him particularly special in the part.,

‘Er, which part? He played 7 of them!’

well thanks for all this discussion of mandy patinkin and his name.
i'd never heard of him, so looked him up.
he seems to have emerged into mainstream acting from musical theatre, and anyone with a voice like that...also i would say he sounds like a mensch. so thank you for introducing me.
