I remember it well, I got mine pieced on my 13th birthday, went to the jewellers with my mum and felt very brave sitting there waiting for the needle, ? was disappointed I couldn’t have nice gold studs though , had to have the awful thin hoop, felt very grown up and couldn’t wait until Xmas few months later to get my first gold studs

I was 45. I had them done at the same time as my 16 year daughter who had been pestering for months. We said NO until she was 16.

30. I am an earring-olic! During lockdowns so not going out, I perked myself up in the mornings by putting the fancier and more expensive pairs on.

32. Always feel naked without earrings. Just simple pearl balls usually, but I've got fancier ones if I'm going somewhere really special. Can't remember when that last happened... think it was February last year!

I was in my 30's, I think my mother was in her 50's - my grandmother would have been horrified!

I was in my 40’s and only had then done as my husband wanted to buy me some ear rings for pierced ears!!

My father wouldn't allow it so I had them done the Saturday following my 18th birthday. I had a second piercing, still on the ear lobe, in my early 30s, it got infected and was so uncomfortable I left the earrings out and it sealed up. Then in my early 40s I repeated that second piercing and it was fine. I wore two pairs of studs for years, but dropped to one pair last year when mask-wearing became the norm, and have now abandoned them after catching the elastic on the butterfly fastenings once too often. I don't miss them and doubt I'll wear them routinely again.

18 birthday present from my 2 friends.

Pierced at hair and beauty show.
Ear piercing gun.
Felt like an injection in each ear.

Studs to be left in for several weeks.
Turned frequently and bathed in salt water solution each evening.

No problems however stopped wearing earrings, when first baby grandson started to hug on my ears.
Then number 2 and 3 grandson came along.
Just before locked down decided to start wearing earrings again, bit of pushing through virtually closed up holes!

Lockdown stopped wearing earrings again.
Now this thread has got me thinking that I might punch through the holes again.
Swim at least twice a week so not sure if earrings will just be s nuisance.hmm

My Mum wouldn't allow it whilst living at home, I left when I was 17 and had my ears pierced at 18.

I had years pierced when I was 15 and my mum called me tart for doing it, I then had them done again (2 holes) at 17. I wore 2 small matching colour coordinated studs in each ear, it looked nice and tasteful, and " no" I wasn't a tart, I was very reserved actually. My mother wasn't that nice to me. I was a hairdresser and used to colour my hair in light colours, the names she called me for that are unthinkable. My boss told me I suited the lighter colours better when I finally gave in to my mums bullying and returned to my natural colour, in fact, quite a few people were quite horrified that I'd gone back to my dark colour again. They said it didn't suit me. There's no wonder I have an inferiority complex now is there.... Plus other mental health problems due to my upbringing.

21, went to a jewellers in Southend with a friend who persuaded me! they used to spray your ears with a freezing solution before piercing and I was fine at the time but came over faint about 10 minutes later in Boots! when I got home my Dad said "If God had wanted you to have little holes in your ears he'd have put them there!" I'm glad I did it though

Had mine done around 17/18, loved it felt so grown up

Saetana Mon 03-May-21 14:17:36

On my 12th birthday - I had been nagging my mum for a while and then she just sprung it on me, lol! Down to the jewellery stall at our local indoor market and bang bang two studs literally shot into my ears. Glad I got it done though - wouldn't be without my large collection of silver earrings grin

I know men have pierced ears more than in some previous generations, but I am not among them. It used to be seafarers and gypsies, I think. Neither late first wife nor DW Ashcombe had/has them. I imagine they may be safer than clip on ear-rings, but late first wife seldom wore those either!

The whole (sorry) piercings thing is a mystery to me, just like tats. I see pretty young girls with rings through one or both nostrils. And I am aware that members of both genders now opt for piercings in all sorts of places we do not need to discuss here!

When I worked in London I used to frequent a unisex hairdresser in the Brunswick centre in Holborn. He and wifey were Greek Cypriots, I think. On one occasion a babe-in-arms was having her ears pierced while I was there. Lots of distress for the little one. And for what?

My parents would not allow ears to be pierced in the 50s and 60s so I waited until I was married and had children. I was about 32.

Wasn’t trendy as far as I remember growing up. Can’t remember exact age but about late 20’s early 30’s . I never go out without earings in , feel weird without if I forget. DD1 was a teenager as was DD2 but she stopped wearing them after a few years, her sister still wears every day like me.

Lewie Mon 03-May-21 09:10:40

I was 18 and paid for them myself out of my Saturday job earnings. My Mum didn't object. My favourites are my Tahitian black pearl studs - a reminder of a wonderful holiday.

SueEH Mon 03-May-21 08:48:58

I was 11. First day of the long school holidays as the secondary school rules were that they had to be healed up and able to be taken out for PE ...and my mother refused to let me have them done sooner. At the jewellers with local anaesthetic and a needle.
Always wanted a second set but never quite braved it until two years ago when I took the plunge and really didn’t know what I’d been worried about!
Now have tiny diamond studs in the top and gold danglies in the bottom piercings.

Nannina Mon 03-May-21 08:25:44

20-had to wait until I left home and removed them on visits for another year

Exclamation marks don't necessarily denote sarcasm more surprise really ! Sarcasm would be denoted as (!)

Janburry Mon 03-May-21 00:24:20

Myself and my twin sister were 5 and my older sister 7, we had them done at the same time, we were living in Singapore at the time, it was the norm to have them pierced when young

AussieNanna Sun 02-May-21 23:46:29

17.
My parents werent fans of pierced ears and wouldnt let me get them done any younger.
When I turned 17 and was earning my own money I got them done myself..

NannieDeb Sun 02-May-21 22:24:01

I was 13 and my older sister offered to take me and pay for mine as a birthday present because she wanted hers done but didn’t want to go on her own. She made me go first! I had gold studs and I remember it really hurting too.

GreenGran78 Sun 02-May-21 22:17:12

I never wanted to have them pierced. I’m not really into jewellery much. However when I was in my 50s I joined a Barbershop Chorus. When performing we all wore identical outfits, including earrings. Only a few of us had unpierced ears, and adapting earrings for us was a real nuisance, so I relented and had them done.
Most of my earrings are just costume jewellery. Sod’s law that the one earring I have lost is from a lovely pair of opal ones my Aussie DIL gave me. I’m no longer singing Barbershop, and haven’t worn earrings for ages, so they may have closed up.
