Just a random question for a Saturday.

Have you ever had one too many? grin

I got merry (and on occasions drunk!) on social occasions from teenage to around 60. I’m not that keen on alcohol since reaching my late 60s, apart from one occasion a couple of years ago. My DiL and I had a girly night in. I was getting merry on Prosecco. Then she plied me with shots. The next thing I know, my partner had to come and scrape my unconscious body off the floor. Since then not a dribble of alcohol has touched my lips!

One thing I have noticed from comments on this thread is many admit to being tipsy rather than drunk sounds much nicer lol Where as in fact if you have had enough to feel tipsy you are in fact drunk
Now I have gone through all stages so have a wide experience drank very little until my late thirties was sometimes a little ‘tipsy’ then spent around 4 or so years as a practicing alcoholic have been sober now for 20 years still an alcoholic but don’t drink any alcohol

Well done !

Never, are we in the minority?

I have only had one occasion when I was very, very drunk. That was in my late teens. But I have been drunk on several occasions (not falling down drunk or outrageous behaviour drunk - just suddenly hearing voices a long way away and feeling very disconnected) - not recently though.)

I am fortunate in that I inherited a very poor tolerance of alcohol from my Mother - couple that with a job where you have to be available 24/7 - that means I rarely drank at all ‘till I retired. The last time I had a genuine hangover was as a student. To be honest now I do have the odd glass but hate even the remotest feeling of intoxication. I dread the possibility of losing my self control - my flash point is low enough as it is.
And there are so many less destructive things available to us that give a 10 times better buzz.

I used to like a drink and occasionally get merry. However one year I had so much to drink that as I arrived home, I projectile vomited all the way to the loo (too much info?). After that I kind of wondered how those guys who drink heavily with their mates and throw up in the street regularly cope with that. I decided then and there to stop drinking and have been 99.9% teatotal for at least 15 years. The o.1% is for the glass of sherry I have at Christmas. The thing is, I really don't miss it at all. In fact if I'm with people who are getting tipsey, it's quite funny to watch them.

Never been drunk in my life though I love a glass of wine, a G and T or a sherry. There were alcoholics in my wider family and I have always been afraid it might be genetic. Also, I'm a Christian and the New Testament is clear on never getting drunk on alcohol, so it's not even an option for me.

Drunk as a skunk!
Lol. Rarely these days but can attest to a misspent youth!! I have a hole in my savings to prove it!

If you have reached a certain age and never been drunk would advise not starting now because like other things getting drunk is best left to the young. grin

Allsorts Tue 28-Sep-21 07:26:21

Didn’t touch drink until about 30, Still not really bothered, but I do love a nice glass of wine and maybe the odd g and t. Remember once having just a couple of sherries, the ceiling came down to meet me and I was violently sick, it put me off it for life. I might have more than a glass if at a party but always stop if I feel remotely squiffy.

Once at 17. Barley wine and cider, put me off for life, if I drink one bottle of wine a year. I would be exaggerating.

Purplepoppies Tue 28-Sep-21 07:02:31

Too much when I was younger. To a point I don't indulge anymore. I did have some good times but the bad times started outweighing them.
My ex MIL was gold pin wearing pioneer (Catholic lady) never a drop had passed her lips.
Im unsure of the correlation but several of her children became alcoholic. Very sad.

I was tea total until my first husband divorced me, then after making the mistake of remarrying I find life more bearable with a wine glass in hand. However, I am finding nights spent on the bathroom floor much harder these days.

Many times! Too many to remember. Lol!!

Yes on many occasion, and having had a pub tenancy plus my OH being the Steward of a Working Mens Club alcohol was literally on tap.
Since loosing rather a lot of weight after joining SlimmingWorld I prefer to use my syns on food rather than alcohol. I do however partake of the demon drink when I’m on holiday but not to the drunk stage.

Thank goodness my grandchildren don’t have to experience this

I was just thinking that many may be experiencing Freshers' Week - I hope they can be sensible and the drink culture is waning, Seamus89.

I’m sure there are lots of people who grew up in places like Liverpool where your whole life after the age of 15 revolved around pubs , clubs and 24 hour drinking at weekends . This was the 70’s and 80’s and even at work all successes were celebrated by a piss-up , especially in the police ….
I was out of my skull after my first night out with work , I was 18 , thankfully I was looked after .
Asking for fruit juice or lemonade resulted in derisive comments all round .
Thank goodness my grandchildren don’t have to experience this .

Greciangirl Mon 27-Sep-21 20:02:34

Many times, but not for the last few years.
I found that the older I got, the less I could drink.

Amalegra Mon 27-Sep-21 19:00:51

Used to thoroughly enjoy a drink or three in my youth and until a few years ago I enjoyed a few glasses of wine. Yes I’ve been quite tipsy! Now I don’t drink at all as it really does exacerbate the stomach problems I have (as does spicy food, alas!). I missed it at first as I felt a bit left out in social situations as it is sometimes viewed as ‘not quite the norm’ to drink no alcohol. Now I don’t care, I don’t miss it one bit and take me as I am or not at all! Saves me a fortune too!

CarrieAnn Mon 27-Sep-21 17:44:27

I am Ttotal always have been,I was brought up as a Methodist. That's not why I don't drink though. I hate the taste and smell of alcohol and I always like to know exactly what I've said and done.Comes of being a bit of a control freak I think

LovelyLady Mon 27-Sep-21 17:28:35

Never. I enjoy seeing others behaving foolishly and loosing control of their tongue. If they could only see themselves they’d stop drinking I’m sure.
The ones in white trousers who leave ‘wee’ Mark’s as they leave the lavatory.
The ones who tell others there deepest thoughts in a loud whisper.
The ones who treat strangers as if they’re lovers.
The ones who miss the chair as they try to sit.
At a wedding where a guest fell as he tried to toast the happy couple.
The ones who have no regulation of what is polite and what is rude behaviour.
Do I drink? - no, it’s more fun watching those who do indulge.

Fairly unusual, I guess. In common with many other people, I got drunk once or twice when I was a young person (and I mean once or twice, not every week!).

I don't drink any alcohol now, and haven't done so for something like 11 years. I didn't drink much prior to that - mostly the odd drink when visiting family members for Birthdays or Christmas. It is so expensive, and you don't have anything to show for your money!

I'm happy to visit a pub with family or friends - I just have soft drinks. Everyone can decide for themselves what they want to have.

Harmonypuss Mon 27-Sep-21 16:41:02

At 53 I can count the times I've been 'extremely merry' on one hand and there was one occasion (my 18th birthday) when I drank so much I managed to drink myself sober.

I've rarely touched alcohol over the past 15or so years (I prefer my driving licence in my purse, thank you), I might have one or two drinks per year if celebrating with my son.
