Things you think can make you look older than your years!

While having a discussion with two friends this subject came up! They were saying the way some people dress can look a bit matronly! I was saying but it’s not all about dress sense I think having a positive attitude and a smile makes you appear happier so therefore younger, it’s not always about how a person dresses! What do you gransnetters think!

When I was in hospital at Easter a doctor was checking my details and said "76? I thought you were about 65!" This was in a hospital gown with hair that hadn't been brushed for a couple of days so I'm hoping I look OK in actual clothes.

Are you in the North East Yammy? My friends and I use that expression a lot - it speaks volumes!

A face like a smacked a*se!
My late MiL wore that expression permanently - it made her look older and very unapproachable.
When I’m out and about, I try and relax the muscles in my face, especially if I’m anxious or tense.

A long time since I heard that expression but a very descriptive one it made me laugh. My neighbour has it all the time along with the Hyacinth Bucket accent. She's probably "All fur and nee knickers as well".grin

The mirror.

Ha! I do try to avoid looking at myself with my glasses on. They’re just reading glasses so I do usually manage it - it’s a bit of a rude shock when I don’t!

Assuming you don’t have issues that prevent you from standing and walking tall, good posture is IMO something to be aware of. An ex colleague of mine was once mistaken at a distance by another for someone much older, because of the way she was walking.

My hair is wavy. Some days I blow dry it straight but mostly I scrunch it into natural curls so I don’t look like everyone else. Don’t understand why curly haired women straighten their hair as if curls are horrible! I get compliments when I have my hair curly.

Short hair here- but whenever I go to the hairdresser's I always ask her to scrunch by hair and not blowdry it to smooth perfection. She is from Lithuania, and finds the word hilarious!

My DH calls old white haired ladies with tight perms ‘cauliflowers’ ??

Agree, Yammy, with all of the above. But I didn’t think perms were even done nowadays! My hairdresser says she hasn’t done a perm since the 1980’s.

My friend was persuaded to have a root perm by her hairdresser. Her hair is shortish and layered, straight and it gave her hair a lift without making it curly.

Mine looks permed when it's wet, takes ages to blow dry it out straighter.

Going at a tangent here - but attitudes and 'views/opinions' are huge factors, totally irrespective of looks.

This really made me giggle but you are spot on! grin

Long skirts / midi dresses with flat shoes / white trainers is a trendy look

Which only looks good on the young and slim. I can't wait for this to go out of fashion.

You should live in my village Aussiegran there is what is known by many with a smile as a JJ the initials of the hairdresser, they all look like clones.
Maybe Oz is different my cousin in Oz has a beautiful subtly coloured bob, didn't overdress for her son's wedding in Melbourne a few months ago and looked stunning. She personally dressed down not to outdo the bride she told me and wore kitten-heeled shoes so she could walk. I think I had her in mind when I posted. Her clothes were a subtle shade of green a dress with a toning jacket.
As Sago told me on another stream "You reap what you sow", Perhaps in this case "You reap what you thought you saw" not what others perceive of you.grin

Dresses that are too young or short for our age make you look pathetic, beaded or sequined especially. Pale colours that make you fatter than you are. Especially Beige in all its shades in any form Dress, cardigan, fleece, coat.
Not wearing any makeup a subtle touch takes years off you.
The "Village/town perm" provided by the local mobile hairdresser. Hair coloured too dark or that peculiar shade of Ginger you see.
Unkempt hands and nails that are too long or with things stuck on them.
Tatoos they may look good [though personally I don't think that} on young people but on older I think they just make people look as if they are grasping for youth.
False tans and heels that people can't walk in. Out-of-date glasses.
Telling or showing people how good you are going to look at an occasion or trying to outdo the main person i.e The bride or someone's big birthday.
Beauty and age are in the eye of the beholder not the mirror at home.
As said many times on this a lovely open smile works wonders.

Once, years ago ofcourse, a colleague said “oh H your teeth are so white!” - they actually are not, but I always use red lipstick - it always made the teeth look whiter

Look away now!!

I need the white trainers, though, don't I, to complete the look.

White trainers are the summer must have so the papers say.

I guess hairnets are one of those things that do age you, tho. smile

grin How apt! And pinnies too!
I’d love to have a Coronation Street fancy dress party

Speaking as a GN nipper, I’m older than Martha!

Looking at an older lady on TV, I often try to imagine how she'd look with a nice perm such as used to be usual.
It's an interesting experiment.

The whole thing might change making nice perms fashionable for young women, and the sleek bobs and spiky tops just passé.

Gawd, and 3 years older than Minnie! shock
