I cannot believe it!!

Scotland has just appointed the first 'period dignity officer'. A man.
That really does beggar belief. I'm with Martina on this.

Parsley3 Tue 16-Aug-22 16:46:44

I expect that he has been appointed because he has the necessary project management skills. It has nothing to do with the SNP government this time apart from their policy to provide free sanitary products. In my young day, I would have welcomed those little baskets of tampons and towels that I see in toilets these days. It is a good thing.

volver Tue 16-Aug-22 16:49:10

Oh, Martina knows all about what happens in Scottish regions.

Dear Leader? Woke is she?

Honest to goodness, the slightest thing and the wolves are out. Did any of you actually know what his job involves before you launched into the tirade? I'm going to guess not.

Aveline Tue 16-Aug-22 16:51:02

Not wolves just women. What do we know though? Thank goodness we've got a man to explain everything.

Aveline Tue 16-Aug-22 16:54:33

Oh good. Just discovered he's going to help us all discuss the menopause. What joy!

BlueBelle Tue 16-Aug-22 16:57:08

Aunt to nephew and what job did you do when you left school James I became a “Period Dignity Officer” aunty

I understand that the SG is giving some extra money to Health Boards/LAs to help them set up schemes. Publicly owned premises, eg health Centres, Sports Halls/pools, etc. will use their Council funding. Part of the job of the Officer will be persuading commercial premises and work places to routinely supply the sanitary supplies in their own toilets at their own (small in the scheme of things) expense.

PaperMonster Tue 16-Aug-22 17:14:42

Well, hopefully he’ll acknowledge that ‘people who menstruate’ are females. hmm

And is that meant to be derogatory? Is it meant to be beneath men to have such a job?

Just listen to yourselves.

Careful Aveline. That chip on your shoulder might cause you to lose your balance.

Baggytrazzas Tue 16-Aug-22 17:21:42

I must be really dim, what is all the fuss about here? Is it the provision of period products and the cost or the fact that a man has got this regional job that is the issue?

FarNorth Tue 16-Aug-22 17:48:02

From Twitter -
"How was that post only advertised for 10 days, inc two weekends,so 6 working days, and the man who got it already worked at that university?"

It's starting to look like other people didn't get a lot of chance to apply.

Aveline Tue 16-Aug-22 17:48:49

It's not just the provision of period products. The job description goes way beyond that. Can you imagine how comfortable 13 year old girls will be speaking to him about periods? How likely is it that he'll be able to have a clue how they feel physically and mentally? How does having been a personal trainer equip him for discussions of menopause issues.
The only chip on my shoulder is the one of sheer commonsense. This is a daft appointment yet somehow not surprising these days. Sigh.

AmberSpyglass Tue 16-Aug-22 17:52:40

He’s very unlikely to be speaking to teenagers himself. He’ll be coordinating activities. I think it’s hugely important that more men are comfortable discussing periods.

Callistemon21 Tue 16-Aug-22 17:58:43

This has been reported:

Jason Grant, from Dundee, will also discuss issues around the menopause as part of his role
SNP MP Ian Blackford said a woman would be better for the role

Why any country should need a 'Period Dignity Officer ' is beyond me.

Exactly my own opinion!

I just said much the same to DH.

Mr Grant is not a doctor or nurse practitioner then?

Well, yes it is important. It shouldn't be a taboo subject.

But this doesn't mean that a man is the right person for this job.

Grayling Tue 16-Aug-22 18:08:09

Thanks for your post Far North - it certainly sounds like "jobs for the boys". 9 days to sift through replies and carry out interviews and find the right candidate for the job sounds and is absolutely unbelievable even in this computerised age.

Welcome to the 19th century.

You may need to sit down for this Callistemon.

Despite the fact that I am a Scot who supports independence, I sometimes don't agree with other Scots who support independence when it comes to matters totally unrelated to independence.

Jobs for the boys, FarNorth!

I was a visiting lecturer at the institution in question.

Hint: It's not a university.

Not very well informed, these people, aren't they...? But very convinced that everything they believe is correct...

eazybee Tue 16-Aug-22 18:47:14

The job description gives no information as to what knowledge and experience the successful candidate requires, simply a cliche-ridden list of abilities : energy, enthusiasm, excellent communication and IT skills, etc etc. No mention of any medical knowledge or experience, or specific activities such as inspection visits to women's lavatories to check facilities, talking to young girls with no knowledge of menstruation, practical guidance in the use of products required? The post is dealing with people who menstruate so obviously the male sex has equal experience.

Apparently the Act deals with the provision of free sanitary products for those 'who need them;' free to all women or those in financial need, (how to be identified?). The post would require someone with great powers of persuasion, ie a salesman, because the institutions expected to make them available would also be expected to fund them.

It is the use of the term 'people who menstruate' angers me.

If you menstruate you are a woman because you have a womb.
