Just that, really.

I'm curious to know if crashing the economy has influenced anyone's thinking...

I've never voted tory and never will. I will never vote LibDem either. I would like to think labour has changed but I'm really not sure.

I’ve never voted conservative so not sure I should comment - but here goes.
I’m interested in the views of people on gransnet, who are natural conservative voters, in a similar way that I’m a natural left leaning Labour voter.
I imagine germsnshepherdsmum has ideological differences with Truss and Kwarteng. Can people who are as upset as the key financial experts continue to support this awful govt

This is my MP David Warburton, accused of sexual harassment by three different women, taking cocaine, and corruption and nepotism involving a very dodgy Russian.

He has not had the decency to resign.

So no, I will not be voting for Warburton or any other sleazy Tory.

I have voted Conservative in the past. I too thought Rory Stewart a good MP. I don't live in that constituency any longer though. I now live in another safe Tory seat, but while we've been here I haven't voted for them.

Iam64 Wed 28-Sep-22 19:28:41

Varian, thanks for reminding us about this.

So, we’re all either a little or very anti. It’s starting to feel we’re powerless to make a difference until the election. Could be a lot of damage before then. Maybe we should organise gran’s demo? I haven’t demonstrated since the ‘70s but feeling in despair now.

I could (but won't, don't want a ban!) name GN members who will still vote Tory.

The Tory conference starts in Birmingham this weekend. I wonder if there will be public protests. If it was in Manchester I’d be wanting to join protests
Rishi Sunak, Sajid Javid, David David and Mel Stride have told Sky News they will not be attending the conference.
It’s chaos and scary chaos. Economics aren’t my strong point but the concern being expressed by economists and the Bank of England seem rooted in reality

I have nearly always voted Tory. Was once impressed by our local Labour chap so voted for him. However I am seriously considering voting other than Tory at the next GE. Haven’t decided where yet though .

Question Time tomorrow evening will be interesting.

I get the impression that there are, mostly, what I would call traditional Conservative voters here on GN. The 'old-fashioned' Conservative voter, as opposed to the current rabid Right Wing Tories whose ideals are considerably removed from those of, for example, John Major, or even Theresa May.

Truss and Kwarteng, among others, represent- to me anyway - the Ayn Rand ideology of laissez-faire capitalism where self-interest is seen as the guiding principle. One that advocates a free-market economy, and to hell with any notion of consideration for others who might not, for many reasons, be able to compete in this dog-eat-dog world.

She (Rand) calls it rational self-interest and believed it was the natural socio-economic model. The problem with such an ideology is that it has the seeds of its own destruction within it. Huge disparity of wealth brings about strife, civil unrest, and even revolution, and the instability that these create. Her 'hero', in real life, was a man, a serial-killer, who never showed any regret, care or compassion for his victims - in her eyes he was the perfect example of self-interest because of his total lack of feeling for another. William Edward Hickman murdered and dismembered a 12-year old girl. Here's what Rand said about him,

"Other people do not exist for him, and he does not see why they should," (she wrote, gushing that Hickman had) "no regard whatsoever for all that society holds sacred, and with a consciousness all his own. He has the true, innate psychology of a Superman. He can never realize and feel 'other people.'"

It is worth noting that in America, in 2010...

The loudest of all the Republicans, right-wing attack-dog pundits and the Teabagger mobs fighting to kill health care reform and eviscerate "entitlement programs" increasingly hold up Ayn Rand as their guru. Sales of her books have soared in the past couple of years; one poll ranked Atlas Shrugged as the second most influential book of the 20th century, after the Bible.

Our former health secretary, Sajid Javid, was a devotee of Ayn Rand. Just sayin'

I think we are headed down the path of the glorification of the selfish brutality of capitalism, with this current mob. I'm not suggesting they condone murder BTW, but the dedication to self-interest propounded as 'growing the economy', I find rather disturbing.

(quoted texts are taken from various scholarly studies of Ayn Rand, apart from the quote from Rand herself)

Oh varian we share the fact that we have a Tory mp with past allegations against him. We dont even have the same Mp.
I would be quite grateful if people didnt vote Tory, I am in my fifties and we have lost 6ooo from our pension in 2 days.

It is two years to an election, so is guesswork only at best.
It is not the idea for this thread I do not think either.

It could go very wrong economically for the Conservatives, but there is a chance also that this gamble will pay off, so anyone who normally votes Conservative would have to see what happens before assessing the way they would vote by then.

Dickens, I’d never heard of Ayn Rand. She sounds like someone in an American novel featuring psychopathic ‘hero’s’

There is a school of thought that regards her as a sociopath!

I'd never heard of her either, until I started 'studying' the GOP in the USA.

Sajid Javid was one of a couple more who admired her philosophy. A tad worrying.

I tried reading one of her novels (Atlas Shrugged) but found it too depressing, I mean it really did depress me!

In real life, she did not 'believe' in any form of socialised medical care, but towards the end of it, did avail herself of the services offered by whatever Medicaid or Medicare was then called - her and her husband's medical bills were piling up at that time. However, she'd had no choice other than to pay into the system, so obviously was entitled to draw out of it. I don't think she was pauperised, nor did she rely solely on the state aid, but those medical bills can be quite hefty.

It's obvious sometimes MOnica.

Once the GE has been announced, they'll start showing themselves. I've got a list of about 6 (in my head, I'm not that invested in this!). I'd put very good money on it.

Nah. Just find it a bit sad.

It’s to early to tell yet (obv).
I might.
Then again, I might not.

Urmstongran heh, heh, nobody likes a tease.
It will be entirely up to you, like all of us, when we do vote.

As some day it may happen that a victim must be found
I've got a little list — I've got a little list
Of society offenders who might well be underground
And who never would be missed — who never would be missed!
