Things your mother said that you never believed when you were younger.

I remember when I was younger my mum telling me to tuck my top into my trousers because I'd get a draught. Then I ignored her because it didn't matter, I didn't feel the cold. But now I find myself tucking my vest in- and it is warmer. Has your mother ever turned out to be right about things?

Only one thing: classical music has a bigger appeal when you get older (vs your teens)

'You'll be old one day'. Never believed her....

My mother lied to me and told me I couldn't sing. I believed it for far too many years but now I know I can sing and I do.

That's the reverse of the question of course.

"When you have kids you'll know what I mean". Oh yes, she was right on that !

My mother told me I would regret giving up my piano lessons and I do. Wish I could play now.

Always wear something wound your neck - it’ll stop you getting a chill. Never believed it and now I don’t go out without a scarf.

Red wine takes time to appreciate - I didn’t enjoy red wine til my mid 30’s, my tastebuds must have matured by then!

Oh dear.....My Mother was enchanted with having a daughter, after her son. She thought I was just about perfect. Not as good as it sounds.
She so wanted me to be talented in singing and dancing, paid a fortune over the years having me taught which I thoroughly enjoyed. She never realised that I had little talent, and I found that out the hard way. I was always so wanted always to please her with my accomplishments, that I started only to do things I could do well, and not attempt anythng else - played havoc with my GCE's.
Whereas, praise to children is great, never over-praise, Be realistic and honest. 'Well Attempted' is often better and a lot more honest that 'Brillaint'.

Sodapop, my mum said the same to me, and I do regret it, as I would love to be able to play my non existent piano.
The real reason I gave up was that the piano teacher hit my knuckles with a ruler!

Ditto, sodapop

My mother would always tell me it'll never get better if you pick it as I was sat there pulling scabs off my knees

I suppose that was vaguely true but I got great enjoyment from scab picking

Definitely with you on the tucking my top into my trousers trisher. Especially at the back. Mum always said keep yourself warm there and you will stay warm. I laughed at her a lot. Not laughing now, buying long thermal vests and keeping them tucked in.

Not to Marry the first man that Asked, and not to Marry too young, I was strong willed and insecure in that if I believed her over these two things, I would be left on the Shelf.
I took no notice of her, married my Boyfiend of 2years on my 19th Birthday, had 3 Daughters before I turned 24, and Divorced him 5 years later. We still remain distant friends via my Daughters, he went on to have two more failed Marriages, and now lived alone.
I went on to remarry two years later, and remain with DH2 till this day, we have two Daughters together, now both with families of their own and decent Careers, DH2 has always put them first in his life, they had an amazing childhood, whilst DH1 became more interested in Wine, Women, and Song!

Grandmall. It depends; I married my first and only boyfriend at just turned 21, after dating for 18 months, and we're still together 45 years later. You just have to be lucky and get the right one!

If you want to grow your hair long you need to get it cut regularly! What nonsense. I'm not sure I believed her then as I so badly wanted long hair as a little child but she wouldn't allow it.

Mum: It’s shin beef in that stew, not liver!
Me: well it doesn’t taste like the stew you made last week.
Nice try Mum but 70+ years on I still can’t abide liver!

Oldtimer60 Thu 03-Dec-20 09:44:23

My mother always said as we were growing up, "remember marriage is far more than four sticks and a blanket". Very true words indeed.

My mother used to tell me I would feel differently about the village I was brought up in when I was older when I said it was the most boring place on earth.

Glosgran Thu 03-Dec-20 10:11:23

Don't sit on a cold surface (such as the doorstep) or you'll get piles. ? ?

When I had my second child I was suffering from haemorrhoids after the birth and the midwife gave me an ice pack which completely contradicted my mother's advice!

Funnygran Thu 03-Dec-20 10:15:10

Don't wash your hair when you have your period. When I asked why, she said because when I leaned over the washbasin all the blood would rush to my head and I would faint!

This made me laugh out loud....Hilarious

My mum was right about nearly everything and I didn't listen to anything !

Nannina Thu 03-Dec-20 10:39:19

When I used to do the ‘you don’t understand’ or been caught out for something I thought she could never know she used to tell me that she wasn’t born middle aged. I now know what that means after having two stroppy teenage sons and now a teenage granddaughter smile

Urmstongran Thu 03-Dec-20 10:43:33

My mum used to say in winter ‘it’s easier to keep warm than to get warm’. In other words, stay cosy!
