Elf - a favourite Christmas movie no longer?

I see Elf is high on the list of favourite movies at Christmas. I watched it recently and wondered how come the PC brigade haven’t got into a lather about the scene where a grown man dressed as an elf walks into where a young woman is having a shower and starts singing ‘Baby it’s Cold Outside’ to her?

❄️?

I love The Polar Express. I usually hate animated stuff but watched this one day with my GD. It's great.

My favourite Christmas film is The shop around the corner (1940). I think it was re-made as You got mail, which I thought was not a patch on the original.

We still go to the Pictures to see a fillum.

I find Will Ferrell cringe making and have never managed to watch all of Elf. Muppet Christmas Carol is THE best Christmas film - we still watch it every Christmas Eve regardless of whether we're on our own or have a houseful!

I find Elf rather an uncomfortable watch to be honest. It is like watching an adult with learning difficulties as he gallops about and I have never found that funny.

I’ve never heard of Will Ferrell.

Talking of Pc-ness in films and songs, we shouldn’t tinker with, or ban them. They were ‘of their time’. It wasn’t considered offensive, by most women, to be whistled at in the street years ago. We rather took it as a compliment. Likewise, I find it amusing when looking back in amazement at our acceptance of songs like ‘Wives and Lovers’ “Hey, little girl, comb your hair, fix your makeup. Soon he will open the door. Don’t think because there’s a ring on your finger you needn’t try any more!”
They have even started tinkering with Christmas Carols. I was shocked to see “Born that we (not man) no more may die” on a carol sheet.
Changing our past, in any way, is a bad idea.

I've never seen Wonderful Life - or Gone With the Wind (not Christmas I know) - maybe I'll manage it one day. I did watch Miracle on 34th Street last week which was lovely.

All this PC nonsense is ridiculous - Morecombe and Wise's bed scenes would have been banned now - we thought nothing of them back in the day they were just hilarious!

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation with the Griswalds is the funniest Christmas film ever. It cracks me up every time. Hope it's on this year at some point.

I can't bear Will Ferrell either. Everything I've seen him in is totally over the top and infantile.

Shelagh6 Thu 20-Dec-18 23:21:43

I’ve never managed to get through “Its a Wonderful Life”!
Call me unusual......

I’ve never been able to get through “It’s a Wonderful Life’! I know I’m unusual........

There are quite a few actors I can't stand. Will Ferrel being one of them. Adam Sandler and Jim Carey being another two. They have managed the odd dramatic film where they have done well but I just can't stand their silliness! Just leaves me bored to tears!

I thought the media were depicting Elf to no longer be a favourite. It's the oldie with James Stewart (black and white) that has made a comeback.

EllanVannin Thu 20-Dec-18 20:26:29

The Griswald's Christmas was the funniest. National Lampoon with Chevy Chase.

Ilovecheese Thu 20-Dec-18 19:53:07

But there hasn't been any over the top p.c. The Op thought there would be, but there just wasn't.
Some people like the fillum and some don't.

For goodness sake with all this over the top PC there'll be no fantasy films/books left. Snow White's been pulled to bits with other 'FAIRYTALES'. They are fantasy...not real. Elf is a bit of fun. From the start it's based on innocence & naievity. For crying out loud...if you don't like it, don't watch it.

Kate51 Thu 20-Dec-18 17:10:29

Grampie, another vote for the Christmas story, love that film .

GrannyO Thu 20-Dec-18 15:40:04

Lovebeigecardigans Chevy Chase wasn't in Elf but he was in National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation which I loved

GrannyO Thu 20-Dec-18 15:36:41

Awww I loved that scene. A plague on the pc brigade.

Theoddbird Thu 20-Dec-18 15:22:07

I still like the term used when I was young. We went to 'the pictures. My favourite Christmas film is It's a Wonderful Life. I will watch it at some point over Christmas.

Too much preoccupation with America! It may come as a shock that many of us here don't find Will Ferrell amusing either. His brand of humor is both myopic and sophomoric. It's not just that he's not funny, he's downright annoying!

On this side of the pond, most 'Elf' fans are young children who still can't tell the difference between a real elf and Will Ferrell. The rest would be their loving parents who must sacrifice in order to keep the children happy or just grateful for having two solid hours of free time to themselves.

Inexplicably, Will Ferrell has had a lot of success around the world. He's made quite a few films and he has a large fan base. He has followers in America as he does all over the world. I do suspect however, that most are adult 'twelve' year old males and the other two are Beavis and Butthead. tchgrin.
