Elf - a favourite Christmas movie no longer?

I see Elf is high on the list of favourite movies at Christmas. I watched it recently and wondered how come the PC brigade haven’t got into a lather about the scene where a grown man dressed as an elf walks into where a young woman is having a shower and starts singing ‘Baby it’s Cold Outside’ to her?

❄️?

But they haven't got into a lather, so no need to worry.

Just some random grown man, dressed as an elf and passing by the woman's shower?

GrannyGravy13 Wed 19-Dec-18 13:34:52

Noooo leave elf alone ????

Parsley3 Wed 19-Dec-18 13:36:08

Sorry but I find it creepy.

I see nothing funny in Elf at all, or cute or lovely or thoughful. The worst Christmas film.

Aaah, it’s our favourite Christmas film!

I can't be doing with Will Ferrell. I haven't enjoyed any film he's ever been in.
He, to me, is just silly and not funny.

My favourite Christmas movie is
"The Santa Claus". With Tim Allen.

Clause!

I haven't watched Elf, but it sounds like an American thing (Will Ferrell) which they fondly imagine to be amusing. Not for me, thanks!

Elf made me laugh out loud quite a few times, so it gets my vote just for that ❤️?

Curious the sudden interest in Elf. At the beginning of the week the Co-Op staged free cinema screenings of it all around the country. And now it's on TV too. Can't understand the fascination personally !

Moving slightly off topic and prepared to duck when grans call me old fashioned but... why do people call films movies?

Christmas is not Christmas without at least once watching the original Grinch with Jim Carrey. My best Christmas film!

No, leave it alone, Elf is wonderful! - but my favourite Christmas movie by far is The Muppet Christmas Carol.

We watched it the other night and thought it was quite good.

We still love National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation though but my favourite and a must when it's on is the old black and white Christmas Carol.

A Christmas Story is our family favourite by far:

www.imdb.com/title/tt0085334/

Very warm and funny for both adults and children.

I recorded Elf on Sunday to watch later, just because I've never seen it before and it was high on the ratings. I'm wondering if I should have bothered now!

I'm the same it makes me cringe and I get that embarrassed feeling so now I just turn over!

goose1964 Thu 20-Dec-18 11:35:32

the point of the scene is that he's so innocent he doesn't realise what he's doing is inappropriate it's all about the singing

Nanny27 movie grates on me too. Not sure why but I much prefer Film.
My favourite Christmas film is 'it's a wonderful life' old fashioned and sentimental maybe but I don't think it can be beaten.
I saw it for the first time 10 years ago expecting to hate it but loved it.

CarlyD7 Thu 20-Dec-18 12:20:18

Nanny27 - I feel exactly the same. They're FILMS not movies. Just part of the gradual American encroachment on the English langugage, sadly.

Grampie Thu 20-Dec-18 12:53:11

Carly,

I’m glad I didn’t say movie instead of film

But it’s not encroachment from the USA, it’s he UK and other countries embracing US culture.

We are not victims.
