Heard the Jonah Lewie song ‘Stop The Cavalry’ on the radio this morning. I remarked to DH that it was one song I didn’t like at the time, and still don’t!

Is it the tune, ‘du du, dududu, du du ….’ the words, the singer?

Don’t know, but certainly not in my top ten.

Wizard. He looks scary and is obviously miming. The children look bemused and even scared. When he kicks the little girl and demands a kiss. Ugh Gross

Damn! Posted prematurely. "Oh du fröhliche". The tune is more suited to a funeral.

We get almost all the same tunes here in Germany. That's not surprising when you listen to German Christmas carols. They are terrible dirges. The most "popular" one is "Oh dunfröhliche"

Fairytale of New York by The Pogues. Sean McGowan can't carry a tune in a bucket.

I always find myself singing along to Bandaid singing Do They Know it’s Christmas, but cannot join in with the line “ tonight thank God it’s them instead of you”. It seems such a horrible thing to say.

Fairytale of new york is just so terrible, no tune ,silly words. Just yuk

I don’t even know some of these songs named apart from some of the older ones. I belong to three choirs, so at this time of year we sing many proper carols, traditional and some newer ones. The Shepherds’ Farewell and Bethlehem Down are two of my favourites.

Fairy tale of New York is a favourite. It's different and fun. I think of Kirsty McColl and her Mum's fight for justice over Kirsty's death every time I hear it.

i used to like most of them but sadly now they make me cry why do memories have to hurt so much

I actually enjoy listening to most Christmas music, although I do have my favourites, notably most of Phil Spector’s Christmas Album and Mariah Carey’s ‘All I want for Christmas is you’ as well as her version of ‘Oh Holy Night’. Steeleye Span’s ‘Gaudete’ is a beautiful take on the traditional and (oh joy!) in Latin too! These songs, most of them very old now, really get me into the Christmassy mood!

I believe in father Christmas by Greg Lake is the one I almost like.
Is he from Emmerson, Lake and Palmer?

Love this one. And Fairytale of New York. Everything else is just awful imo.

I hate Fairy Tale in New York. Such a miserable, sour song. Makes me depressed. I also don’t like the Cavalry song. We had to sing it in our choir. It was chosen by our leader, a strict Jew, who admitted he had no real knowledge of Christmas carols! It was taken off our repertoire quick quickly?

welbeck Tue 07-Dec-21 17:52:21

i hate that irish new york one; so rough and aggressive, sounds as if they are wanting to start a fight. horrible.
not the spirit of xmas at all.
i appreciate the traditional religious ones, some very ancient, although many of them make me a bit sad. re times past.

Just love “ the drummer boy” sung from Bing Crosby and David Bowie

songstress60 Tue 07-Dec-21 17:39:23

I hate the Cliff Richard, Slade, Wizard Christmas songs. I love "Fairytale in New York", "I believe in Father Christmas", but my all time favourite is "Stay Another Day" by East 17. A real tear jerker.

I listened to Oh Holy Night yesterday by the choir from Carols from Kings 2017. It was so lovely, and I admit, it made my eyes fill with tears. I don't like Christmas songs on the radio, but I love this carol.

Thisnis another choir fave! I have to go through it a couple of times before I go to practice/concert as it makes me weep....

I hate The Pogues Christmas song. Everyone seems to love it but I cannot understand why! I think it is rude and crude!

Ditto, as mentioned in my post!!

I love Tijuana Christmas and have Alexa play it on repeat throughout Christmas Dinner. It reminds me if my dad, the sun and beaches.
Fairytale of New York is homophobic twaddle with intimations of abuse - I hate it.

NotTooOld Tue 07-Dec-21 16:31:40

Oh, noooooooo.....now I know about Little Drummer Boy and I wish I didn't. That's terrible.

maddyone Tue 07-Dec-21 16:15:45

I love Oh Holy Night. I have a CD in my car and as soon as it’s December I play it as I’m driving.
We have lots of Christmas music, songs, carols, classical, all on CD, but we usually just ask Alexa to play Christmas music these days.

My dear late husband hated 'Stop the Cavalry' but I can put up with it. I loathe 'Fairy Tale of New York' which he very much liked! Our tastes mostly coincided pretty well except for the odd exception.

MissAdventure Tue 07-Dec-21 15:18:33

I love the lyrics.
I find them quite touching, especially in Shane McGowan's beer soaked, croaky voice. smile

ShazzaKanazza Tue 07-Dec-21 15:13:01

I love the tune Rowsie without the lyrics so I know what you mean.

MissAdventure Tue 07-Dec-21 14:41:45

I just can't abide being stuffed into a winter coat, sweating like a pig I don't know what, with inane drivel blaring out while I'm trying to concentrate.
All the worst when it starts in September.
Never mind peace, it's more like hell on earth!
