Pubs reopening - that went well ???

A number of pubs in England have shut after customers tested positive for coronavirus.
At least three establishments announced they had shut their doors again just days after reopening at the weekend.
They were among hundreds of venues that welcomed customers after three months as lockdown measures were eased - most apparently with no problem.
But crowds descending in some towns and cities prompted fears social distancing was being disregarded.
The Lighthouse Kitchen and Carvery in Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset, said it was "slowly" working through a list of customers who had left details at the weekend and that all staff had tested negative for the virus.
In Batley, West Yorkshire, the Fox and Hounds said a customer had phoned to say they had tested positive for coronavirus.
Meanwhile the landlord of the Village Home Pub in Alverstoke, Hampshire, said his team were awaiting test results after someone in a member of staff's "family bubble" tested positive. Jess Green, manager of the Lighthouse Kitchen, told BBC Points West she decided to close to "put everyone's health and safety first".
"I felt I had to keep my customers and my staff safe which is why I chose to shut the pub. I'm gutted, but safety comes first.
"We could have opened today but chose not to as I think that's the right thing to do."
Indian takeaway Saagar, also in Burnham, said it would be closing until Friday to undergo a deep clean after one if its drivers had been to the Lighthouse Kitchen, along with the bar the Vape Escape, which has also closed for a full clean after a customer's positive test.

Southend, grannygravy. Where else?

lemongrove Tue 07-Jul-20 21:29:52

Where all the best mass brawls are MissA ( were you involved again ?)?

GrannyGravy13 Tue 07-Jul-20 21:30:58

Of course, I wonder how many outsiders were involved?

It was the pubs that did it. Nothing to do with test and trace. If we don't get it working on a local Public Health basis I imagine there might be a pub here and there who stay quiet. They need the backing and immediate help when they here of a positive case.

Can you explain “it was the pubs that did it” ?

The publicans took it upon themselves to ring the customers and suggest they got a test MawB. They didn't have to close but did so to deep clean. It would be interesting to know when the test and trace system gets in touch with the customers but, even when they do, they will ask them to quarantine for two weeks. There doesn't seem to be any element of testing - but I could have missed that.

I'm always involved, lemon, without even leaving my flat.
I never need to go to southend, my neighbour brings southend to me.

I wondered about that too lemongrove, if some mischief maker would just think it a great joke to pretend they had tested positive. I suppose the track and trace would pick that up, but maybe too late to prevent upheaval.

I also wondered if some went out already feeling poorly.

It does seem rather speedy from pubs first re-opening to customers displaying symptoms, testing and confirmation of COVID.

I presume the claims have been followed up and confirmed.

Yes, grannygravy, and she wandered into my flat today, having seen off 8 visitors.
A quick "yoohoo!" and she was in like a flash.

Different priorities North of the (mythical) Border ,playgrounds are open and children under 12 dont need to socially distance , thousands of happy grannies got cuddles from friday over the weekend ,including me .Pubs with beer gardens open from yesterday but many choosing not to open this week ,its a bit more cautious but our numbers are showing the benefit
.Only 1 death since Thursday and just 2 new cases over the weekend ,that means we've had more days without a death than with for over 2 weeks Thats one of the reasons for the wee demo at the border ,we dont want it coming over from hotspots. Local restauarnts have been doing takeaway and will continue with that for a while,my friend has 3 restaurants in the next town and its amazing how busy they have been .

I live on the south coast, but I’m beginning to wish I lived in Scotland paddyanne.

I’m sure there are going to be other cases identified in pubs and restaurants over the coming weeks and months, but what’s the alternative?

It’s completely right to end the lockdown and I feel we will just have to accept that cases like this will arise.

If we find these few cases unacceptable, then the only other option is to close the hospitality industry with the permanent loss of goodness knows how many jobs.

Wouldn’t it be great though if the police did their job and cracked down on the vast numbers congregating to protest at the latest cause of the month, whether it’s saving the planet or the BLM lot.

The only reason pubs have opened is due to the tax the government will get on booze. But its obvious few rules will be followed in big cities, as when people get drunk they get loud and act silly, I just hope it doesn't spoil it for the rest of us and cause another spike as I'm looking forward to a hair cut soon, and I just wish swimming pools and gyms would open as I'm not always motivated to exercise at home, but I know I must as I have osteoporosis, my treatment I have to have in hospital is also on hold like many others and I so feel for people with serious medical needs.

Aepgirl Wed 08-Jul-20 10:14:44

Again, ignorant selfish people putting everybody else at risk. They got their wish to open pubs and immediately abused the privilege.

jaylucy Wed 08-Jul-20 10:24:36

That's 3 pubs out of how many?
You also have to remember that you usually have had corona for anything up to 2 weeks before any symptoms are showing and you are tested. I have also heard of people being tested positive and not showing any symptoms.
Many smaller pubs have decided not to open and there are at least 2 hotels with restaurants in my area that will be closing pemanently

clareken Wed 08-Jul-20 10:26:28

A Wetherspoons pub near me had to call the police to break up fights. Closed the pub for a couple of hours, then reopened.

Callistemon Wed 08-Jul-20 10:31:22

I cannot understand why gyms are not allowed to open where people would behave responsibly and the staff can ensure hygiene ripules are enforced.

The same with beauty parlours - one owner shown on our local TV last night was in despair as pubs are allowed to re-open, as are hairdressers but she may lose her business soon. She said that the highest standards of hygiene are maintained in her salon with her staff having the necessary PPE equipment.

At some point the public has to start making their own responsible decisions.

It does seem arbitrary.

The Somerset pub landlady clearly was suspicious of foul play because she said that she had asked for, and been shown, the customer's positive test result. Good for her for shutting and doing the work of the test and trace farce...

If you go to a drive-in test clinic you might get your results in a few hours, if the timings are good.

Our local pub has opened for takeaways, that's good enough for me for a while...

maddyone Wed 08-Jul-20 10:48:23

When I saw her being interviewed on the news yesterday, I was very impressed with the owner/landlady of the pub in Somerset. She came over as very committed to providing a safe service. I wish all those in the Soho area had been half as professional.

Noreen3 Wed 08-Jul-20 10:54:16

businesses need to start opening again, but there are always a few who spoil it for everyone else. There was trouble at a few pubs in my town.I've noticed that there are not many cafes open yet, expected more to be open

Bijou Wed 08-Jul-20 11:21:38

The pubs are doing their best however my son tells me that as he passed his local (on the other side of the road) a crowd of people were meeting and embracing one another.

Edithb Wed 08-Jul-20 12:39:41

I live in one of the towns that has a pub closure. I just think this is bound to happen for a very long time to come as there are new cases every day. It’s a balancing act.
