Indian variant

Getting a little concerned about the mood music that seems to be in the air regarding this variant. There are over 700 confirmed cases, it seems to spread 60% more rapidly. I notice that in some areas well over 50% of new cases are of this variant and SAGE are having an emergency meeting this afternoon to discuss. Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water??

They've started surge testing where I live, unfortunately to get a test I have to catch 2 buses to get to the nearest test centre or take a taxi which has to go almost the same route as the bus because the metro line gets in the way of a direct route, neither seems very appealing under the current circumstances.

I only usually leave the house when I have to.

A woman of Indian origin in Blackburn was blaming Boris for not stopping people from coming back from India. Does nobody have any sense of personal responsibility?

Why is it relevant that the lady was of Indian origin?

No, they have a sense of entitlement.

Err? Who's "they"?

Tom Spector and Zoe have explained that they have reviewed their algorithm and that every region has got numbers going up because of the new way that they are measuring it. Not time to panic yet.

From the explanation in the app: We've adjusted our figures to account for the high number of vaccinated contributors using the ZOE COVID study. As a result incidence rates have been revised to be higher. The numbers remain low and there is no cause for alarm.

Our area is reported as having 40 active cases on the Zoe app. Which does not seem too bad. Except last week it was 20. This is before relaxing this week. I'm more concerned than I've been for a while.

Sorry if I come across as angry, it just scares me, the thought of living under all these restrictions for goodness knows how long.
Having a British government tell us when we can hug our children or have our families in our own homes would have been laughable 2 years ago.
Now we're all walking around with muzzles on, scared of anyone we might walk past, just in case they might be carrying the virus with no symptoms (there's still no proof of this) and so many of us aren't even questioning it.
It terrifies me that people are happy to accept this as the new normal.
The deaths and hospitalisations are level now, even though the Indian variant has been here for weeks.

Oh dear, ALL governments have been following similar routes. Should live in Germany or Spain, they have had curfews, and had to produce papers to give reason why they are outside past curfew. My sister has to have a lab test and make an appointment to visit any shop apart from a supermarket/chemist shop. Drs letter needs producing re exemption, her shop is only click and collect, but now closed again. So no we are not badly done to over here.

No bingo today then, the Indian variant is too close I’ll just have to be patient and continue to be safe and cautious it’s not as if I’ve a chance of winning wink

rosie1959 Mon 17-May-21 08:28:15

Daisymae it could but we cannot stay closed forever if it wasn't the Indian varient it would be something else
It probably spread more in some locations due to a lower uptake of vaccination hopefully this is being rectified

Daisymae Mon 17-May-21 08:22:38

Rosie, it can also grind to a halt as we well know. Article in the Times today quoting a Sage adviser who said it made no sense to keep the borders open. There's a lot we don't know about the Indian variant but we are going to find out. I think that government should be about more than keeping our fingers crossed and hoping for the best.

Our businesses especially those in hospitality have been closed around 6 months. They have now prepared for opening ordering in millions of pounds worth of stock between them. If we had reversed today’s opening how long could they carry on.
Hotels in the UK especially in resorts are now booked up. Pubs with no outdoor seating have ordered in food and drink do they Chuck it all away again
Will there ever be a good time life has to go on

Whitewavemark2 Mon 17-May-21 05:13:07

I so wish that we could have hung on for just a bit longer before opening up though.

This variant appears much more transmissible and it is inevitable that after today there will be another spike, more hospitalisations and deaths.

The trouble is the more freedom we give the virus the more chance it has to mutate.

Five people who have received the first dose of vaccine and one who received both doses have been hospitalised here with the Indian variant of Covid, according to BBC News.

MayBee70 Sun 16-May-21 23:21:46

Even though we’re relieved that the new variant doesn’t appear to be more lethal it’s still as lethal as the one that has killed millions of people throughout the world. And while we’re going to the pub and meeting up with friends and family we need to spare a thought for what’s happening to those less fortunate in other parts of the world.

I don't know about "certain conditions" but health issues have always thrived in proverty. I just hope that people have begun to realise inequality eventually affects us all.

JaneJudge Sun 16-May-21 22:32:43

I posted link the other day to a guardian article wrt to how the variant has been so dangerous in India and how conditions in health and housing has made the covid variant more dangerous and less able to treat there. I do think covid seems to thrive in certain conditions sad

Cathymac Sun 16-May-21 21:55:23

BBC reporting that early lab data showed that vaccines remain effective against the Indian variant .
“The variant may be less hazardous than feared but key questions about it remain unanswered.

Post pandemic I’m going to miss all the lovely people from other countries that do web chats on his bog. They’ve become like old friends!

What??? Do they discuss information while on his toilet?

Sorry!

MayBee70 ?. I am a Dr John & vitD fan too.

I watch him every night after I’ve had my tea. Don’t know what I would have without his blog over the past year.
