The trouble with exercise......

In this case, walking.

If I go and do it first thing (I invariably lose my way walk further than I meant to), I arrive back completely knackered and the housework/ironing doesn't get done.

Or, if I do the house stuff first, then the urge to exercise goes off and then that doesn't get done.

Is there an answer?

Sigh.

jinglej Wed 19-Oct-11 10:33:02

Yes, I know I could get off GN and go and do one or the other!

Elegran Wed 19-Oct-11 10:34:39

Be firm and do your walking and housework on alternate days? But then it would pour with rain on a walking day and be glorious weather on a stay-in-and-iron-day. You can't win.

Notsogrand Wed 19-Oct-11 10:39:49

The trouble with exercise is.... it hurts!

jinglej Wed 19-Oct-11 10:42:45

I quite enjoy it notso, specially when the sun is shining, like today.

Yes Elegran that would be the sensible thing to do. But I get this urge to get out! (and leave the lot of it)

Notsogrand Wed 19-Oct-11 10:42:51

Can you cut down on the amount of housework you do jingle? If you squint your eyes, it only needs doing every 3/4 days. Leaves you more time for walking and surfing. wink

jinglej Wed 19-Oct-11 10:45:28

Yes. I'll take me glasses off. grin

jinglej Your family loves you and your taking exercise contributes to your chances of being around longer for them to love. No one loved his/her mother or grandmother because she had smooth sheets and a vacuumed carpet. No brainer. grin

janthea Wed 19-Oct-11 11:40:02

I've always taken the line that exercise is bad for you!! Think how it makes you feel!! grin

Joan Wed 19-Oct-11 11:53:53

The trouble with exercise is - when you are feeling lazy, you can't pay someone to do it for you.

gracesmum Wed 19-Oct-11 13:50:24

Every 3 to 4 days Notsogrand? I subscribe to the view expressed I think by Quentin Crisp, that the trouble with dusting/hoovering, is that you exhaust yourself doing it and then in 6 months it needs doing all over again!
(Apologies to any purists) for paraphrasing his wise words. wink

Notsogrand Wed 19-Oct-11 14:09:06

I think he also said gracesmum that dust only gets so thick....then no thicker. I can verify that. The reference of 3 to 4 days was my attempt to not seem as slovenly anti-housework as I am in reality. grin

jinglej Wed 19-Oct-11 14:48:30

See, I did the ironing and dusted half the living room (no, its not huge! I got distracted hmm) and now its started raining.

Tom Sawyer it is then. (reading it to "test it out" to see if it is suitable for GS for Xmas.

Notsogrand Wed 19-Oct-11 14:59:49

Respect jingle.

GoldenGran Wed 19-Oct-11 15:02:15

I love Tom Sawyer, much better for you than house work.I am putting off mine by being on this. Must stop. grin

..no point dusting a shelf that no one is tall enought to see, either..I also discovered something the other week. Although I dust the house [sometimes] when it comes tiles [kitchen and bathroom] I always used a damp cloth. I never thought to use polish. Obviously not on greasy kitchen tiles but those in the window etc. I suppose I should still use something bacteria zapping in the bathroom sometimes.

Annobel Wed 19-Oct-11 16:11:18

Nor is there any point in dusting the top of the wardrobe! If dust is discarded human skin, how does it get all the way up there anyway? hmm

bagitha Wed 19-Oct-11 16:35:59

gracesmum grin! That's my approach to housework. Where it needs to be clean it is, but I've always got something better to do than dusting.

Tom Sawyer is suitable for everybody, jings.

Ariadne Wed 19-Oct-11 16:45:15

When I was in the last class at Junior school, in 1956, our teacher read "Tom Sawyer" to us -a chapter every Friday afternoon. Bliss.

Gally Wed 19-Oct-11 16:48:23

I have to get up and do the top of the wardrobes before the end of November as the decorator is coming to do our bedroom which hasn't been painted since 1996 and he's going to dismantle them - oh the shame if he was covered in all that horrible stuff on Day 1 blush
I had a Swiss friend who didn't believe in doing very much housework, if any at all 'life's too short Gally, I want to make the most of it and my kids'. Sadly she died just after she was 50, so when I begin to worry about the state of my house, I remember her and then go and enjoy a walk somewhere or time on the beach and get my exercise another way. smile

nanachrissy Wed 19-Oct-11 16:58:15

Jinglej, I have the same problem with my walks/housework. If in doubt go on G/net! As for dusting, "Henry" comes out with the little round dust brush and it's done in no time! I love him wink

Elegran Wed 19-Oct-11 17:29:01

Annobel wants to know how the dust gets on top of the wardrobe. Well, clearly it is from the little old lady who reported that her neighbour opposite was parading naked in full view of her bedroom. The policeman who came to have a look told her that he could not see into her neighbour's house from that bedroom window. "Well, not from standing just there, of course" she replied "you have to be on top of the wardrobe ....."

About Tom Sawyer. (Suppose this should go in the book club bit, but still.)

Its got a bad word in it that obviously was acceptable in America at that time. Begins with "n". So, can't really give it to ten year old GS. Perhaps when he's a bit older. I wouldn't want to teach him a word that he hasn't come across yet.

Shame, but still. sad

jinglej Wed 19-Oct-11 18:09:59

He has heard the odd word or two from his granny's lips - by mistake - that he shouldn't have done. But not as bad as that one. shock

GoldenGran Wed 19-Oct-11 18:19:04

I'd forgotten that, are there not updated edited versions.
