Do you ever think that the food you eat is not safe?

ParlorGames Wed 29-Mar-23 18:03:56

Thanks for that Meryl......I had obviously missed previous posts.

Lets make use of this thread. It is about food safety,

The front page of the Daily Telegraph today had a big report about a major meat processing company in the Midlands, now closed) that may has been incorporating rotten meat and meat that had been dropped on the floor into its products for several decades.

It was a major supplier to several supermarket chains, plus caterers and food manufacturers and its products were sold as raw meat and incorporated into sandwiches and other fresh food products.

No name was given for the company. Anyone living in the midlands had a big meat processing plaant near them close down recently?

Mollygo Thu 30-Mar-23 08:57:04

Good idea M0nica. I wonder if the ‘cannot be disclosed for legal reasons’ could affect posting on here. Workers in those food depts who had to check all the foods would also know. I wonder if they were warned off too.

Mollygo Thu 30-Mar-23 09:03:39

There are 118 midlands meat factories listed on Google.

Elegran Thu 30-Mar-23 10:11:31

It took me only two minutes Googling to find this news item in the Guardian. Chicken production at West Midlands plant suspended I've changed the headline slightly so as not to broadcast the name of the firm across the globe - but the G has already done so.

I stopped searching once this came up, but it may not be the one referred to. There may be others.

Elegran Thu 30-Mar-23 10:13:42

Stacks of meat processing firms are closing for financial reasons, so some employees were cutting corners. Firm was shocked to discover this, of course.

Elegran Thu 30-Mar-23 10:19:41

That was in 2017, by the way. No longer hot news, but perhaps it is to Health1Fitness2 or he/she is in NI

The current "Telegraph" item is in the BELFAST Telegraph, and refers to a meat factory in Offaly.

If I get arrested for "legal reasons" for posting this, I hope someone will stand me bail.

Elegran Thu 30-Mar-23 10:24:49

Nope - I've read further, and the Offaly firm has been struck by Covid and is stopping production for that reason.

M0nica Thu 30-Mar-23 14:27:35

The item I saw was definitely an ENGLISH midlands factory and it involved meat of all types, not just chicken and include processed meat because it mention meat used in sandwiches.

The news item I saw was front page Daily Telegraph. I read it on the BBC news where they show the front pages of all the national dailies.

Yes, the article says the firm can’t be named for legal reasons.

The link posted by Elegran referred to a Midlands factory in Ireland.

Ireland has a region call the Midlands as well as mainland UK.

Not safe for me or not safe for the planet?

Good question.

Does anyone think that life is not safe?
Walking along the street, in the countryside, driving, just breathing?

Elegran Thu 30-Mar-23 14:38:37

Sounds as though they are to be charged and come to trial for it. People living locally will know the details from employees.

OP, are you the person who comes on MN quite often to ask if they've ever wondered if the mains water is safe ??

Oh yes, water.

Not always safe.

NanaDana Thu 30-Mar-23 14:42:26

Do you usually breathe out, after you've breathed in? confused

Oh no! Now there’s something else to worry about! DH is going to monitor me to check whether I do or not.

I was hoping this was going to lead to someone telling me that the almonds I found in the cupboard, best before end Jan 23, were safe to eat. Anybody?

Callistemon21 Thu 30-Mar-23 15:11:33

Do you breathe properly?

M0nica Thu 30-Mar-23 15:55:32

CallistemonI changed the topic to this case and introduced the case mentioned in the Daily Telegraph, which clearly preceded the one posted by Elegran

I was making the point that the article I first mentioned was the English Midlands and, according to the Daily Telegraph involved all types of meat, not just chicken. Here is a direct link to the article: www.pressreader.com/uk/1190

Out of curiosity, what is meat used in sandwiches?

When we ate meat, up to 10 or so years ago, I cooked sliced it, and used it in sandwiches. Is that the reference or what?

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 30-Mar-23 16:53:39

I’ve only known cooked sliced meat such as ham, chicken and beef to be used in sandwiches, though years ago you could get meat paste, perhaps you still can. I dread to think what’s in that. And pate of course though I haven’t seen it used in sandwiches. Also some ham is processed somehow to make it into neat, thin squares - I don’t buy that.

If in doubt I feed them to the grey squirrel.

They are all trying to make food cheaper, today Nestle in France announced that are closing a pizza factory because of contaminated meat caused by mismanagement last year.

Is this anything to do with it or is it another?
28 Apr 2021 The Swiss food giant Nestlé announced on Wednesday the closure of a factory in England by the end of 2023.
