I've had two so far, one of them actually beat me to the bottom of the stairs.shock

Going to find some peppermint/tea tree/lavender oil and put few drops around my windows etc. Will also collect come conkers.

Yes they are back! I watched a naked man in our ensuite bathroom trying to remove one with a loo brush. It was very - er - entertaining?! I hope you find some conkers, biker - most of our trees seem to be dying of something this year!

Badgranma Sat 19-Sep-20 08:57:22

Does the Conker thing actually work? Where do you place them for best effect?

trustgone4sure Sat 19-Sep-20 09:07:12

Well bikergran it will be a good investment,iv`e used them for years and they do work i would say 90% of the time.
Home Bargains sell them at a very reasonable price, around £1-40.
Conkers do if you put a hole in them.

When we had a static caravan we were plagued with them.
I would collect fresh conkers and placed them along all the window sills and in the boiler cupboard , they seemed to like the warmth, it certainly worked for us.
I believe you can now buy oil or essence of horse chestnut.

Daughter swears by conkers she put them in all the rooms corners

Grandmabatty Sat 19-Sep-20 09:20:24

At the moment they are using the shed and like to jump out at me every time I go in. greyduster the description of the naked man in the shower made me laugh. I assume you know said naked man? Or that might be a whole new thread involving falling over in the shower ?

I too try to conquer with conkers as natural deterrents are the way to go. I might give the loo brush a try though. ?

Which ones are we talking about here? Spiders? My worst one is those crane flies that seem to float about with their long spindly legs and long wings. I can't bear them.

Callistemon Sat 19-Sep-20 09:33:17

I've tried the peppermint oil, the little creatures don't seem to mind it at all.
Now have lots of lavender in the room and I'm wondering where there is a horse chestnut tree for conkers.

They seem to hide but must come out at night and mark their territory.

Callistemon Sat 19-Sep-20 09:34:19

Yes, spiders Discogran. I know they're good things but they can go somewhere else!

sassenach512 Sat 19-Sep-20 09:54:00

I dread this time of year, it's usually as I'm watching TV that I see the scuttling little critters out the corner of my eye and I know I can't settle till I've seen it evicted. I invested in one of those catchers on a stick and a box on the end with a sliding door and I must say I feel braver with it, though the sliding of the door is a bit tricky till said creepy is shut in. I've tried the lavender oil around the doors and, touch wood, I haven't seen any for the past week so fingers crossed, I may have cracked it

I always have a clean glass jar and a card labelled SPIDERS and I keep them on the window ledge in the back porch so I always know where to find them.

MissAdventure Sat 19-Sep-20 10:00:24

I've been all of a quiver since finding a big spider in my saucepan cupboard the other day.

I keep shaking everything to make sure there are no monsters hiding..

Whitewavemark2 Sat 19-Sep-20 10:03:42

I like them! I love watching them scuttling across the floor trying to find a good hidey hole.

They do good work and are welcome.

trisher Sat 19-Sep-20 10:07:45

Oh come on they're useful little creatures, they eat flies and bugs. All you need is a glass and a piece of cardboard and remove them into the garden. Think of them as Anansi. Watch this and maybe you will feel better about them grin

Three so far in our house...big ones, huge b*****'s they were. One had the cheek to crawl up inside the leg of my jeans overnight whilst they were hanging up in the bathroom. Gave me a nasty shock. ?

paddyanne Sat 19-Sep-20 11:44:02

Ihaf one fall from the ceiling onto my chest yesterday.I'm not bothered by them but I was pleased it didn't land in my diet drink .I just scooped it up and put it on the floor poor wee thing scarpered so fast even the cat couldn't catch it

Luckygirl Sat 19-Sep-20 11:49:17

One came down on its thread and into my lap whilst I was reading in bed. And there is one that has taken up residence under the radiator pipe in the bedroom. I sleep more easily if I can see him - if I can't I begin to wonder where he is! - in my pjs??!!

I wish they were "little critters" as described above. Mine are big buggers!

Just be thankful we do not live in Australia!!!

Teacheranne Sat 19-Sep-20 11:52:07

I go on a spider hunt each night before I go to bed! I hope that by removing all the female long legged type, the big male ones won't bother coming in to look for them! I have a battery operated spider catcher from Lakeland which is great but I'm not sure i will be quick enough to catch the ones that race across the floor - and some of the beasts won't fit in the tube!

tanith Sat 19-Sep-20 12:54:28

Conkers do work I've got a good dozen around the house they seem to work better fresh off the tree.

trisher Sat 19-Sep-20 13:04:14

Teacheranne a battery operated spider catcher Now there's posh! grin

SueDonim Sat 19-Sep-20 13:04:19

Why do I always feel compelled to open these thread and then terrify myself at the thought of these eight-legged devil’s horsemen coming to get me?! ? ? ?

Dd1 has had some massive ones in her bath. A monster crawled out of one of my GD’s bath toys! Dd also had to take a reading from her outside meter cupboard and she swears the biggest arachnid ever reared itself up and roared at her! ?

Callistemon Sat 19-Sep-20 13:06:42

I have! Yes, some are like dinner plates, but they are probably not the ones to kill you although they can give a painful bite.

MissAdventure Sat 19-Sep-20 13:20:16

I don't care, even if they want to give me a kiss.

They're the stuff of nightmares!
