Andrea Leadsom

I turned on the BBC News this morning and could not believe what I saw. Andrea Leadsom had the nerve to say that the Media should get behind the Brexit negotiators presenting a united front against the EU. First she reckons that because 42% plus 40% voted for Tory and Labour that gives 82% in favour of a Brexit mandate. As for blaming the media for questioning them that smacks of dictatorship. Harping back to the referendum result which any reasonable person knows was seriously flawed.

How does she tick????

That media has to question government in a democracy, as regards Brexit and other matters they have not been outspoken enough. Which is why government has got away with it for so long.

What a loathsome woman with such a manipulative ungenuine smile on her face as she told the presenter off .....nasty piece of work

rosesarered Sat 24-Jun-17 07:45:39

grin Is she a Tory by any chance?

kittylester Sat 24-Jun-17 07:48:29

Guess so, roses grin

Anniebach Sat 24-Jun-17 08:10:48

How did you work that out Roses grin

I agree with her the media should get behind Brexit instead of slagging Britain off all the time.

daphnedill Sat 24-Jun-17 08:30:00

In a democracy, the media should hold the government to account - not be cheerleaders.

rosesarered Sat 24-Jun-17 08:30:31

Is the feeling from some quarters ' how very dare she suggest the media get behind Britain and stop slagging off the Government therefore weakening our position in Europe even more!' Yes, I think it is.

If the media had been less biassed towards 'Leave' at the time of the referendum, we might not be in this mess now.
And what right has she to tell us that we should be 'patriotic' and do what the tories want?
[fuming]

daphnedill Sat 24-Jun-17 08:33:55

If the media wants to get behind Britain, it should be campaigning to abandon Brexit - in my opinion.

The BBC's role is not to be cheerleader or the government's personal PR machine.

durhamjen Sat 24-Jun-17 08:34:21

Tim Farron said it was sinister. I agree.
Do you think Andrea Leadsom is squaring up for another leadership battle?

mcem Sat 24-Jun-17 08:39:50

Don't you think things would be even worse under AL?
On the other hand could things be any worse?

whitewave Sat 24-Jun-17 08:43:17

I think that the mainstream media is actually becoming more irrelevant as time goes by.

The young do not get their news from that, but from social media. So while we worry about mainstream media bias the young have found a way to by-pas it and go directly to the horses mouth as it were - I recommend it.

Rigby46 Sat 24-Jun-17 08:45:15

Sinister is a good word.On MN she is known as Andrea as a mother Loathesome because of her cheap shot during the leadership campaign when she said she'd be a better leader than May because she had children and therefore cared more about the future of the country. That's the measure of the woman. Those who are stupid and unthinking enough to think that what she said about the media and Brexit is even remotely acceptable has clearly learned nothing from history and we all know where that could finish.

Rigby46 Sat 24-Jun-17 08:46:32

ww good point about MSM

Baggs Sat 24-Jun-17 08:46:57

I don't think it's sinister at all. A majority voted for Brexit. Leadsom is part of the government trying to fulfill what the majority voted for.

I wouldn't think it sinister if the majority had voted Remain and a government minister said the media should get behind the government. Which, come to think of it, a good deal of the media probably would.

The media doesn't have to take any notice after all. It can say what it likes, thank goodness.

Yay for freedom of the press!

Alima Sat 24-Jun-17 08:47:39

Will she be going to Glastonbury too?

Baggs Sat 24-Jun-17 08:48:10

Yes, good point, ww.

kittylester Sat 24-Jun-17 08:49:27

What is 'sinister' about it?

quite. baggs.

Baggs Sat 24-Jun-17 08:49:46

Yay for freedom of speech for government ministers as well, I say. Whether I agree with them is irrelevant.

vampirequeen Sat 24-Jun-17 08:49:48

Is this interview when she said that anyone who doesn't agree with the way the government is handling Brexit is unpatriotic?

Baggs Sat 24-Jun-17 08:58:17

She has a point if that is so, vamp. Again, one can disagree without saying she shouldn't say that.

I've read some interesting things about the difference between patriotism and nationalism recently. one good nutshell remark was that patriotism is pride in one's country for what it does contrasted with nationalism, which the writer saw rather as pride in one's country whatever it does. The first attitude includes a feeling of responsibility; the second includes a feeling of blind arrogance.
I like that distinction and am glad I found it.

Luckygirl Sat 24-Jun-17 09:01:16

The country voted for Brexit by a small majority. That is a given. The nature and content of the negotiations are not and our media should be asking questions about how this is being conducted without being accused of not being patriotic. It is their patriotic (how I hate that word!) duty to keep us all informed as best they can when folk like AL are resisting every inch of the way. Silly woman.

daphnedill Sat 24-Jun-17 09:02:47

It is sinister. It is not the role of the national broadcaster to get behind the government. Democracy really is doomed if that happens.

I guess this message about patriotism is from CHQ. Our newly elected sycophantic MP is saying exactly the same thing.

suzied Sat 24-Jun-17 09:07:26

The Daily Fail ,Excess, Currant Bun and Torygraph are all trumpeting Brexit to the rafters. How is that anti government media?
