Boris Johnson at his best. Terrorism speech.

Oh I know this means Boris Johnson will be criticised now by the majority of those who contribute to this forum, but his speech against terrorism (live from Whitehall now) is hitting the nail right on the head.

I see him usually as a buffoon, a bit of a liability and someone who speaks off the cuff and can be clumsy with words, but right now his insight and intelligence is impressive, as is his sensitivity for Islam, and he is extremely eloquent.

Boris Johnson in a new mode, which I'll admit is long overdue but I suspect in this speech he speaks for most of us. Bravo Mr Johnson, journalist, historian and politician.

OK, let the slagging off begin - or will he be given credit where credit is due?

lemongrove Sun 10-Dec-17 17:00:17

Yes tchgrin

Jalima1108 Sun 10-Dec-17 16:47:48

Shhh everyone, don't mention it, or is it just me who is superstitious?

lemongrove Sun 10-Dec-17 16:44:31

If the court case has been postponed, it may mean they are thinking about release.

lemongrove Sun 10-Dec-17 16:42:55

I have no idea what you mean durhamjen confused

whitewave Sun 10-Dec-17 15:48:48

Oh oh oh the court case has been postponed. I sooooo hope that is good news.

whitewave Sun 10-Dec-17 15:05:43

sadangry failed!

Baggs Sun 10-Dec-17 13:00:33

And I agree with what ww said too, as I'm sure we all do.

Baggs Sun 10-Dec-17 12:59:58

Good sense in your post, lem.

durhamjen Sun 10-Dec-17 09:43:04

Agreed, whitewave.
Showing your heart as usual, lemon.

lemongrove Sun 10-Dec-17 09:15:22

There are other British citizens as well that Johnson is hoping to secure release ( or lesser sentences) for.He can only do so much with diplomacy though. It will be a ‘I’ll scratch your back if you scratch mine’ scenario. They are very unpredictable though.

whitewave Sun 10-Dec-17 09:03:48

I wish Johnson the very best in his attempt to rescue our lady from the Iranian prison.

She is near to a complete breakdown, so needs someone with good diplomatic skills and intelligence on her side. Let us all hope he rises to the occasion.

NfkDumpling Sat 09-Dec-17 21:22:11

The media do like to give that impression. It’s always Britain and the USA and occasionally France. Thanks so much for the list!

lemongrove Sat 09-Dec-17 21:06:34

Glad that you pointed out how many countries involved Jalima because it suits some peoples agenda to say that everything is always Britain and the US.Plus the fight against terrorism is far more than ‘petrol and little else’!

Jalima1108 Sat 09-Dec-17 18:14:07

Ah well, that is another question - most of us did not agree with that, or of Blair being in Bush's pocket. However, having unleashed it all, then many more countries became involved - in an attempt to bring peace and to help fight terrorism.

jura2 Sat 09-Dec-17 17:31:34

... or in causing it? The USA declared war on Irak in 2003 btw.

Jalima1108 Sat 09-Dec-17 17:12:05

Switzerland too - are they fighting for petrol and little else or are they uniting with others in the fight against terrorism?

'In a speech entitled “The struggle against Islamist terror: How global Britain is helping to win”, the Foreign Secretary will point at countries that have been affected by attacks but not gone to war in the Middle East.

“To assert, as people often do, that the terrorism we see on the streets of Britain and America is some kind of punishment for adventurism and folly in the Middle East is to ignore that these so-called punishments are visited on peoples – Swedes, Belgians, Finns or the Japanese hostages murdered by Daesh – with no such history in the region,” he will tell diplomats and academics gathered at the Foreign Office in London later today'

Swedes, Belgians, Finns, Japanese and many others are very aware they are suffering too- because of our and the USA's involvement in the Middle East - in our fight for petrol and little else.

jura2 Sat 09-Dec-17 16:34:24

I was quite impressed with his speech - until he then went on to say our and the USA's foreign policy and wars in the Middle East had nothing to do with the rise of terrorism in the West. Therefore becoming an apologist for our going to war in Irak and selling arms to Saudis and others to kill innocents - the whole hidden agenda to protect the UK arms manufacturers and dealers sad

POGS Sat 09-Dec-17 16:32:28

Can I ask of the supposed knowledgeable posters who are against Saudi Arabia and other Arab Nations who back one side in Yemen :-

' What do you think about the Houtius and Iran who fight for the other side'?

durhamjen Sat 09-Dec-17 16:27:53

" IPB will award the Séan MacBride Peace Prize to Jeremy Corbyn. – for his sustained and powerful political work for disarmament and peace. As an active member, vice-chair and now vice-president of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament in the UK he has for many years worked to further the political message of nuclear disarmament. As the past chair of the Stop the War Campaign in the UK he has worked for peace and alternatives to war. He has ceaselessly stood by the principles, which he has held for so long, to ensure true security and well-being for all – for his constituents, for the citizens of the UK and for the people of the world."

Much more impressive than a speech that Johnson made, saying we should attack along with other western societies.

durhamjen Sat 09-Dec-17 16:24:27

I know they do. What I was showing is that Johnson changes his mind depending on his cause at the time.

Jalima1108 Sat 09-Dec-17 16:22:46

What was the source djen?
