MPs vote decisively with the government. No second referendum.

Common sense prevails.

MPs voted decisively 319 to 23 to reject Lib Dem Amendment 120 seeking a referendum on the final Brexit agreement.

Labour were told to abstain but this time Caroline Flint and John Mann were the ones to defy Corbyn and vote with the government against a second referendum. Kate Hoey and Frank Field obeyed their whip and abstained. On the Tory side even veteran Remainer Ken Clarke voted with the government against a second referendum.

My point about other countries is to highlight that this issue is not always due to govt policies and there is no obvious correlation to the wealth or size of the country.
The number of homeless is around double in Germany. It's a similar percentage to the UK in Sweden and France.
All countries struggle with reducing the number of homeless. Instead of just criticising, as I asked before - who is getting it right?

durhamjen Sat 23-Dec-17 21:12:39

Lemon, the government stopped collecting the statistics on where immigrants were living, and where all the rough sleepers and homeless were in 2012.
Ask yourself why.

suzied Sat 23-Dec-17 19:33:53

People who think the billions not paid to the EU will go to public services are living in cloud cuckoo land.

Solving problems of addiction are hellishly difficult, and
Mental health problems are much the same.
Addicts mainly don’t want to stop taking drugs, and anybody with mental health issues don’t want to be in institutions.
There are no easy answers.

suzied Sat 23-Dec-17 19:23:42

Rough sleepers - most are homegrown not migrants so why not try to tackle problems of addiction, mental health, housing policies etc not blame immigrants!

lemongrove Sat 23-Dec-17 19:07:55

Successive governments have been abysmal when it comes to immigration over the years.

lemongrove Sat 23-Dec-17 19:06:49

It isn’t numbers of immigrants that we need to know of per se, but who all the people are that are rough sleeping and why to seriously tackle this problem.

durhamjen Sat 23-Dec-17 18:47:41

Well, lemon, if we need to know numbers of immigrants, and know where they are, you'd better tell your friends in the government. They stopped collecting the meaningful numbers in 2012, under May's watch in the home office.
Can you ask her why?

durhamjen Sat 23-Dec-17 18:45:09

It doesn't, suzie.

suzied Sat 23-Dec-17 18:39:34

Btw more immigrants come from outside the EU - how does our esteemed government control those numbers?

durhamjen Sat 23-Dec-17 18:21:49

EU residents didn't just arrive in 2010.
The ones I know have been here for at least twenty or thirty years.
The number of immigrants overall between 2010 and 2017 rose by 1.5 million.
But don't worry, it's going down now because of Brexit.
Who will you blame then?

whitewave Sat 23-Dec-17 17:51:02

petra supply and demand can’t be used for the housing market in the U.K. because there are a number of variables which stop this happening. Land banks for one. Overseas wealthy investors for another. There are a number of factors.

petra Sat 23-Dec-17 17:42:46

durhamjen
You often post on the fact that we aren't building enough houses/flats in the uk.
The uk population in 2010 was 62mil +
......................................in 2017 is 66 mil +
You maintain that immigration has had no negative Impact on house prices and rents.
Simple economics, it's called supply and demand. If there's not enough of something the price goes up, whether it's a house or a sack of potatoes.

lemongrove Sat 23-Dec-17 17:25:37

Many Eastern Europeans are doing low paid jobs so not contributing much at all, but they all need to live somewhere, need to have their children in Schools and use the NHS.
Maybe some are living rough if out of work and don’t wish to return home.
That’s why we need to know, not just numbers but the reasons and who.

ninny Sat 23-Dec-17 16:25:46

It's common sense actually but because it doesn't meet your agenda you refuse to see it 3.7m EU citizens who need somewhere to live so obviously rents have risen and we are short of housing stock especially in London. Perhaps some do contribute and pay taxes but that's besides the point they are taking up housing stock and pushing rents up.

durhamjen Sat 23-Dec-17 14:27:05

Rough sleepers have gone up by 113% since 2010, so obviously there were rough sleepers when Labour were in power.
However, aren't you ashamed that the number has more than doubled since the Tories came to power?

durhamjen Sat 23-Dec-17 14:20:12

Stupid childish response.
EU citizens contribute more to the economy than they take out.
Many EU citizens are still here because they have married a British citizen. I presume you count that as anathema, too.

ninny Sat 23-Dec-17 13:33:08

Were there no rough sleepers when Labour were last in government.
Perhaps if we didn't have 3.7m EU citizens here rents would not have risen so high and more housing stock would be a available.

Theresa May thinks it works, because it did in the 12th century.
However, we need to build more almshouses.

durhamjen Sat 23-Dec-17 12:01:55

What rubbish, Baggs.
How has trickle down worked anywhere in the world?

Why do those at the top have more of the world's wealth than ever before?

Maggiemaybe Sat 23-Dec-17 11:50:55

Not all are homeless due to mental health issues or drug abuse. There are always cases of family breakdown, youngsters leaving home to escape abuse, etc. Established charities such as Centrepoint do a great job and I'd like to see them publicly funded.

Baggs Sat 23-Dec-17 11:18:11

The fact that numbers in other European countries are equivalent is relevant.
