Has the referendum poisoned our society?

According to the media Boris Johnson jibe has prompted calls for inquiry into Tory Islamophobia. We need to reflect upon what is happening in our two main political party’s

The Muslim Council of Britain has urged Theresa May to launch an independent inquiry into Islamophobia in the Conservative party after several of the party’s MPs supported “dehumanising comments” made by Boris Johnson.
The group’s letter to the prime minister said the level of political support for the former foreign secretary’s newspaper column about fully veiled Muslim women had “highlighted the underbelly of Islamophobia” in Tory ranks and demonstrated the need for action.
If there is far more extremism creeping into either party I would find it difficult to support either of them. I believe the UK is a far better place when we are more tolerant and I hate the intolerance that has rapidely developed since the
referendum. I have come round to the opinion mthat Brexit is now pestbsplitting our nation in a way none of us foresaw and we need to,wake up to the damage our politicians and the media are doing in poisoning our once tolerent society. How do we get out of this appalling continuous down spin treating us apart?
Is a National Governmental or a people vote we all accept part of the answers ?

Google People's Vote and sign the petition.
They have more than 203 000 votes towards their target of 250 000.
But in answer to your question Yes it has!

Anniebach Tue 14-Aug-18 11:41:32

I think it has always been there, now we are talking about it as if it only started with the referendum.

Framilode Tue 14-Aug-18 11:49:48

Yes. It was far too complex to be decided on a simple yes, no. It has split families and friends and unearthed a great deal of poison.

ContraryMary88 Tue 14-Aug-18 11:57:35

I agree with anniebach it was there when the Islamists terror cells became active in the UK.

Absolutely Nothing to do with Brexit.

Anniebach Tue 14-Aug-18 12:04:08

It was there with the Jews, Irish, those from the commonwealth, then the Middle East , we pretend this is a tolerent country, not so.

paddyann Tue 14-Aug-18 12:14:01

There have always been eegits ,Brexit just gave them a voice. Most people even if they had strange ,biggoted views they kept them to themselves .Not now its all we hear ,clowns spouting off about immigration without a thought of how things can be run without immigrants .
Even newspapers with horrible headlines.Sundays Telegraph had a front page saying Nicola Sturgeon is a liar and a traitor and should be beheaded !! That just whips up hate,I hasten to add they did change it after a shedload of complaints .Maybe they should have remembered Jo Cox before they put it online though

nigglynellie Tue 14-Aug-18 12:42:07

Social media as well as brexit has lot to do with poisoning society. (Its like the curates egg!) It's so easy now to target groups, individuals, spread gossip (lies!!) Like you annie, I simply don't know what to believe any more about most things and do you know, I'm beginning not to care! What will be will be for better for worse!

JenniferEccles Tue 14-Aug-18 12:53:45

Before there are any howls of outrage about Islamophobia, lets wait til we hear which ethnic group the latest Westminster terrorist belongs in, shall we?

Anniebach Tue 14-Aug-18 13:04:30

niggly, the same for me, when talk of brexit crops up on the news, as it does every day, I now think - i don’t care anymore

winterwhite Tue 14-Aug-18 13:22:47

Yes, I do think there’s more hate and intolerant talk than, say10 years ago. Don’t see it as connected with Brexit - or rather nothing to do with the EU as such, but immigration arguments may fuel it and immigration was a strong driver for many Leavers. Also trolling on social media.

OldMeg Tue 14-Aug-18 13:25:27

There’s always been xenophobia. We always need someone to hate or blame or to look down on. And not just us ‘Brits’ (who are a mongrel race anyway)

Muslims are just our latest hate, before that there have been the Jews, the Irish, those from the Commonwealth......hang on hasn’t Annie already made this point.

Probably the Romans looked down on the Celts.

OldMeg Tue 14-Aug-18 13:26:29

And the Christians (fed them to lions ?)

mcem Tue 14-Aug-18 13:26:54

Wish it was that easy!
Fingers in ears and walk away lalala-ing!
To hell with responsibility and social conscience!

Nicenanny3 Tue 14-Aug-18 13:29:24

Agree JenniferEccles no new threads about the terrorist attack today because it doesn't meet some posters agenda. It's just Tory, Boris and Brexit bashing.

Anniebach Tue 14-Aug-18 13:30:59

OldMeg, we did it again ?

Joelsnan Tue 14-Aug-18 13:48:13

As a nation we are far more tolerant than many countries within this world, we do tend to take a very parochial view of our country and many consider it the worst of worst, when actually, it's not bad.
Humans will always be wary of things that are unusual to us, that do not conform to our norms, but generally providing time is given (and this may be a long time), and there is give and take on both sides, assimmilation takes place.
Much as we imagine ourselves to be superior to all other animals on this planet there are very many similarities. You only have to watch a zoo program to see how difficult zoo keepers find introducing new members to an established group. We are no different.
Social media has enabled the pack mentality to show itself with one person posting bile and others feeling that they also then have lucense to post the same. Many would not say the things in face to face discussion.

M0nica Tue 14-Aug-18 13:50:37

Brexit made hating other people respectable.

Feel free to start a thread.

Luckygirl Tue 14-Aug-18 13:55:04

Oh dear - once again, (Boris aside - he is a bit of a buffoon!) - major inquiries into some sort of "phobia" are being demanded when people express their legitimate concerns - in this case about the security and women's freedom implications of the burka.

It is an erosion of free speech. It is not racist or objectionable to raise concerns. It is objectionable to shout abuse at people who wear the burka;but not to say that it worries you to see them.

Joelsnan Tue 14-Aug-18 13:56:44

but immigration arguments may fuel it and immigration was a strong driver for for many Leavers
How do you know this? Did you stand outside every polling station and ask or are you just using the same old ill -informed assumptions?

Luckygirl Tue 14-Aug-18 13:56:58

And no - I do not think that having concerns about this issue has anything at all to do with the referendum, much as I deprecate the decision to hold one.

Nicenanny3 Tue 14-Aug-18 14:02:32

Joelsnan an observation not a desire on my part to start a new thread.

JenniferEccles Tue 14-Aug-18 16:00:19

Brexit did NOT make hating other people respectable.

I voted Leave, and yes, immigration was an important factor (but not the only one) in my decision. It is not xenophobic to know with absolute certainty that our tiny country simply cannot continue with this level of uncontrolled immigration. Saying that does not mean I hate all foreigners.

lemongrove Tue 14-Aug-18 16:08:46

I agree with what Luckygirl has just said ( in two posts)
