Is joining the Liberal Party

Anniebach Fri 14-Jun-19 09:21:00

Hope so NotSpaghetti

M0nica Fri 14-Jun-19 09:29:08

We had a referendum in 2011 on changing the voting system. The result was a majority for staying as we are. So, for once, we cannot blame Westminster for not supporting change.

Grandad1943 Fri 14-Jun-19 09:44:53

Well, Chuka TheMoaner has been wrong about a great many things in recent months.

He left the Labour Party as he was not elected onto its National Executive committeee and could not bear the thought of staying and fighting for what he thought should be Labour Policies, in short, he ran away.

He then joins the newly formed Change Parity obviously in full expectation that he would be elected as its leader. When that does not come about, he runs off once again rather than staying around to argue his "started principled belief" that there should be a new centre party in British politics.

In the above, where are the principles, where is the belief, where is any strength of character? For me, Chuka TheMoaner typifies everything that is wrong in British political circles.

I genuinely wonder why the Liberal Democrats would wish to have such a person in their ranks; he certainly will be no asset when things get tough.

Anyway, I am off to the office, see you later

Anniebach Fri 14-Jun-19 09:55:17

He left the Labour Party because he wouldn’t accept racism
,there was a thread ‘call off the dogs Corbyn ‘

POGS Fri 14-Jun-19 10:05:36

Not surprised Umuna has joined Lib Dems, others to follow?

I have banged on about ALL (21?) MP's who now sit as Independents /formed a new party and want a 2nd EU Referendum but hypocritically do not give their constituents the same chance.

Re the First Past The Post question the newly formed Change UK Party only fought as a party in the EU Election for MEP's and is that not implemented on a Proportional Representation basis?

I think the EU /MEP election showed those who thought they were going to work miracles by forming Change UK were going to have to work hard and those that left so quickly after the results were announced had no stomach for the fight when they saw how poorly Change UK had done.

I think there was quite possibility a potential for a clash of egos in Change UK between Anna Soubry, Heidi Allen and Chuka Umuna . I suppose the only place Chuka Umuna saw as a way to stay in politics would either be to win a constituency as an Independent MP or join the largest party that suits his belief , the Lib Dems. Hmm !

He certainly lost faith with the Labour Party under the Leadership of Corbyn / McDonnell /Momentum so at least he showed some metal then by leaving Labour but he bottled it very quickly by leaving Change UK and dropping his supposed friends /colleagues whom no doubt Chuka Umuna and Heidi Allen were major players in getting them to follow suit. I bet they feel really pissed off with them, I would be.

Since 2010 Chuka Umunna has:
-been Labour MP for Streatham, then resigned:
-stood for the Labour leadership but withdrew
suddenly;
- formed Change.org (now under its third name) then
resigned;
-now joined the Liberal Democrats.

Not someone I would put any faith in.

Anniebach Fri 14-Jun-19 10:44:05

You are mistaken eazybee the new party only had one name, Change UK. Chuka left before the party changed to
Change,.org.

Eloethan Fri 14-Jun-19 10:57:15

If he was a man of principle he wouldn't be jumping from party to party in order to further his own political ambitions. I am not a Lib Dem but at least its politicians - and many of its supporters - soldier on even when times are very tough.

NotSpaghetti Fri 14-Jun-19 10:57:30

Sadly M0nica, everyone I know who is pro-PR voted against the terrible “non-PR” version of PR on offer last time. This is why I said “I do wish we had a sensible system of proportional representation”.
The one on offer was hardly better than the system we have now!

SirChenjin Fri 14-Jun-19 11:01:26

He strikes me as a very grounded person who is only doing what more politicians should do at a time when the main parties appear to have been taken over by the more radical left/right wingers.

There's a reason that the LDs are topping the opinion polls and it's time that our elected MPs got a good firm grip of themselves.

Anniebach Fri 14-Jun-19 11:03:38

Having principles means remaining in a racist party ?

M0nica Fri 14-Jun-19 11:21:56

Notspaghetti I admire them, the whole event was such damp firework, beyond knowing I voted, I cannot, for the life of me, remember which way.

EllanVannin Fri 14-Jun-19 11:24:21

Whatever the man is, he appears to be more of a gentleman than any of the other rabble !

Callistemon Fri 14-Jun-19 11:33:51

I wonder if this is someone following their principles or someone desperate to remain as an MP - no matter which party he has to join.

I don't think so - is his present constituency likely to return a Lib Dem?
Last GE he polled 38,212 as the Labour candidate, the Lib Dem came third at 3,611.
Unless, of course, they find him a safe Lib Dem seat if someone leaves politics.

Grandad perhaps the Labour party left him, rather than he left the party. It has happened to so many other people, unfortunately.

Anniebach Fri 14-Jun-19 12:22:55

Agree Callistemon he could have stayed with the party in
a safe labour seat , as some Labour MP’s have chosen to do.

M0nica Fri 14-Jun-19 12:35:35

No one in their right mind thinks switiching from Lab to Lib was the sign of an ambitious politician. I say that as a lifetime member of the Libs, then Lib Dems.

If he was really ambitious he would now be a fully committed Corbynista, brown nosing Len McLuskey for everything he could get

Anniebach Fri 14-Jun-19 12:48:43

Chuka has said he was wrong. I too said I was wrong to vote for Corbyn as leader, admitting you were wrong is being honest . How many here have gone through life without having to say ‘I was wrong’

GrannyGravy13 Fri 14-Jun-19 12:59:18

Well this may come back to haunt Chuka at election time??

Anniebach Fri 14-Jun-19 13:10:14

Wish I could find my posts praising Corbyn in the lead up
To the leadership election.

Egg on face would sum it up

pinkquartz Fri 14-Jun-19 13:16:22

His handwriting is terrible. are there any handwriting experts who could analyse ?

GrannyGravy13 Fri 14-Jun-19 13:20:13

It's "digital" handwriting, like signing one of those dreadful machines for deliveries. Something available on smartphones and tablets.

Labaik Fri 14-Jun-19 14:12:02

He didn't leave the Labour Party. The Labour Party left him....[imo]

jura2 Fri 14-Jun-19 14:42:12

Labaik - I agree. Eloethan- as someone who truly believes Brexit will be a disaster for the country, and even more importantly, for the poorest in society - what choice did he have? Many of us feel currently totally politically isolated and without leadership.

And of course for all the arch Conservatives on here who criticise Chuka - if it was good enough for Churchill to crosse the floor, several times in fact- as he felt it was the only to go forwards - why not for others. He should have joined Lib Dem immediately and not waste time forming new party and divide the remain vote.

Callistemon Fri 14-Jun-19 14:45:49

He should have joined Lib Dem immediately and not waste time forming new party and divide the remain vote
Yes, he should!

jura I think that Laibak was qualifying my post, not agreeing with me about the Labour Party leaving Chuka.

Did he really post that GrannyGravy or was it a spoof grin

GrannyGravy13 Fri 14-Jun-19 14:48:52

It’s from his twitter account.
