33 days to go .... What’s the Brexit plan?

Something’s afoot!

The SNP’s embrace – with a public show of reluctance – for the idea of sending Jeremy Corbyn into Downing Street shows the mounting tetchiness among Remainers that somehow Boris will be able to get around the Benn Act, and thereby leave the UK hurtling towards a no deal by the end of next month unless they take action.

What are your thoughts on what’s going on?

lemongrove Sat 28-Sep-19 10:37:37

It seems Ian Blackford has fallen into the elephant trap by asking the SNP to back a VONC but am guessing he will be talked out of it by more intelligent heads.
My feeling is that we will get a deal that will be voted for by Parliament, as they are too scared that Johnson will simply take us out on 31st October.
Failing that, a short extension and a GE.
However, I wouldn’t want to place a large bet on any outcome the way things are.

Interesting exchange of letters here between Steven Barclay and Michael Barnier

www.gov.uk/government/publications/brexit-preparedness-correspondence-with-the-eu-institutions

Barclay sounds a bit desperate IMO

wheels are in motion to stop Boris leaving without a deal on the 31st October.Lawful wheels involving Scottish Judiciary ,the case will be heard on OCT 8th

My thoughts are that 'the plan' is to continue to wind up Leave voters to fever pitch with a sense of being hard done by, and then leave with no deal to satisfy those like John Redwood who say that they won't support a revamp of TM's deal.
Then have a GE in November which they hope Labour will win, so that BJ et al can blame Labour for the resulting chaos and hits on poorer Leave voters.
I truly hope this won't work and that we have an extension and then revoke Article 50.
IMO the many, many Leave voters who continue to lap up without thinking the nonsense fed to them by this govt and its unelected 'advisers' carry a great responsibility.

One rumoured plan

Maugham QC
@JolyonMaugham

Rumours flying about further prorogations. There is an amusing (to me) and potentially excruciating (for it) little trap for the Government if it does.

" Nobile Officium "

Meaning Noble Office, How better to Describe
The Power of the Court of Session and the
High Court of Justiciary Held in Scotland,
And those 2 Words are the Next to hit
Boris between the Eyes next month,
These exist in Scottish law and allow
the Court To Sign the EU Brexit
extension letter if Johnston Refuses
And no, he Cannot appeal it to the
Supreme court. So the Next time anyone
Says or Asks, What are the SNP Doing
For Scotland, Tell them this and so
Much more To protect (ALL)
of the People, Not just some

Was that written by Rabbie Burns Paddy ? grin

jura2 Sat 28-Sep-19 14:16:03

Something's afoot - oh yes- from all sides, for sure.

paddyann Sat 28-Sep-19 14:56:33

Lemon Dont LEAVE us ,pleaded Cameron ..LEAD us ..thats what we'll do,we voted remain and we wont be dragged out against our will .This law is rarely used but still valid so dont laugh too much .

Rabbie was a Nationist AND socialist ,thats why he is still popular all over the world .Celebrated every year by millions .

jura2 Sat 28-Sep-19 15:50:48

it is also being considered- that violence is being incited- so it leads to violence in the streets so Johnson can shut up all opposition by calling a State of Emergency. Cummings all over again?

Daisymae Sat 28-Sep-19 16:27:41

Jura2 that has crossed my mind too. I wonder if they will ever be called to account for their actions?

Whitewavemark2 Sat 28-Sep-19 16:33:41

I agree with Hutton

Will Hutton
@williamnhutton
What Johnson wants asap is a people v parliament election. The Opposition must not give it him: the more he waits the more he is exposed. An interim government must extend article 50, hold a referendum and then a general election. Corbyn would be smart to keep his hands clean

Whitewavemark2 Sat 28-Sep-19 16:35:50

The first instinct was the right on by the opposition.

Make Johnson sweat.

The longer he goes on the more he is shown to be the Charlatan he is and his paucity of ideas or planning.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 28-Sep-19 16:37:37

It will avoid this as well

More news of potential corruption by the charlatan

Whitewavemark2 Sat 28-Sep-19 16:49:22

I’m surprised that journalist aren't all over this.

Robert Harris
@Robert___Harris

Philip Hammond, ex-Chancellor, seriously suggests in today’s Times that one reason the Prime Minister may want a hard Brexit is so that his backers in the City don’t lose billions — corruption on a scale I wouldn’t dare put in fiction

Whitewavemark2 Sat 28-Sep-19 16:54:20

Here

Big scoop from @Byline_Media - extraordinary amounts of money amounting to £8.3bn placed by Boris Johnson and Vote Leave backers on a no deal crashout on 31 October #DisasterCapitalism bylinetimes.com/2019/09/11/brexit-disaster-capitalism-8-billion-bet-on-no-deal-crash-out-by-boris-johnsons-leave-backers/

Whitewavemark2 Sat 28-Sep-19 16:56:00

And this

McDonnell has written to the government’s most senior civil servant, cabinet secretary Sir Mark Sedwill, to ask for an investigation into alleged conflicts of interest with currency speculators #sackjohnson

Davidhs Sat 28-Sep-19 18:03:41

All this is quite probably true, proving it is another matter, because nothing will have been paid directly to the various service providers ( social media, lobbyists, bribes, you name it) all likely paid through offshore companies.
These are people who would sell their own granny for a fiver and have no morals or conscience whatsoever, the only thing that matters is winning.

Grandad1943 Sat 28-Sep-19 18:13:07

If anything is being planned, my guess would be that a move against Johnson by the Rebel Alliance could come on Tuesday with a vote of no confidence in the House of Commons.

There seems to be a growing consensus among the opposition parties in Parliament that Johnson should be removed and a temporary unity government installed on a strict timeframe with an agenda to bring about a further extension of artical fifty and during the period of that extension hold a General Election.

As stated the above is just my hunch, but such a move could wrongfoot the Tories, especially if during the Election run-up Johnson was facing further inquiries or worse in regard to his relationship with Jennifer Arcuri.

Such a situation would be of equal benefit to all the political parties in the election campaign, with exception of the Tory party of course.

Very dangerous but very intriguing times

lemongrove Sat 28-Sep-19 18:18:16

It’s not just a hunch Grandad43 as I read the exact thing on the ipad news half an hour ago.

Curlywhirly Sat 28-Sep-19 18:41:22

Blimey, talk about political machinations, (by both sides) what will they think of next? This scenario is getting more complex than a John Le Carre novel!!

lemongrove Sat 28-Sep-19 18:50:30

It certainly is Curly ? in fact, if it was a film we would likely dismiss it as too OTT.
There will be an entire series made on Brexit, at some point in the near future.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 28-Sep-19 19:56:11

Hope this plan falls flat on its face

Andrew Adonis
@Andrew_Adonis

Cummings & Johnson’s latest desperate strategy is clearly to whip up a ‘betrayal’ frenzy, with a whiff of riot, to pressurise MPs & maybe even to try & justify emergency powers to override the Benn Act

Just when we thought they couldn’t do anything worse than suspend Parliament!
