Please take a moment to watch this, it's one of the most uplifting things you'll see I'm sure. This lovely young man is using his position as a footballer to speak out on child poverty and asking the government to reinstate food vouchers for children so they don't go hungry this summer. His mother must be so proud of her boy!

They are voting today on the issue.

I would prefer that this footballer campaigned for people to not have children they cannot afford to feed and for men to start taking responsibility for the children they father and for women to make better choices in the men they allow to impregnate them.

It is not the state's responsibility to feed children.People need to take individual responsibility for themselves, their actions and their families. Too many people think it doesn't matter if a relationship fails or they don't have to work because they can just claim benefits.

@JolyonMaugham
It takes a very special kind of Government to ask itself the question "what's the best place to make a saving of one tenth of one percent of our pandemic spending" and come up with the answer "by taking food from the plates of the poorest children in the country."

Whitewavemark2 Tue 16-Jun-20 08:20:46

qq you are clearly one of those very special kind of people

Marcus Rashford
@MarcusRashford
1. When you wake up this morning and run your shower, take a second to think about parents who have had their water turned off during lockdown.”

My god is that even legal given the virus etc!!?

Iam64 Tue 16-Jun-20 08:28:21

quiz queen - you take the biscuit.
If his mum hadn't had children, the world would be a poorer place because we wouldn't have Marcus Rashford in it.

Whitewavemark2 Tue 16-Jun-20 08:29:43

9 out of 30 children in any classroom are in poverty and hungry.

Nannee49 Tue 16-Jun-20 08:38:02

I wish we all lived in your sunlit uplands world qq where there's clearly nothing to disrupt the status quo of lucky tranquillity...no adverse events, no cruel twists of fate, no need of a helping hand from compassionate strangers.

Marcus Rashford had absolutely no control over how many children his mother had nor whether his father was around to support the children.

What he has done is work hard to achieve what he has and and to help others.

A shining example of what "taking back control" should be all about.

growstuff Tue 16-Jun-20 08:56:01

Professor Brian Cox is keeping a tally of the trolls on his Twitter feed who claim that Rashford is wrong because people should have fewer children and the government isn't responsible for feeding them. It must be a "thing".

I wonder how many children actually live in big families. The statistics show that there are actually not that many families with more than three children.

quizqueen obviously hasn't heard that thousands of people, many of whom have never been unemployed in their lives, have lost their jobs in the current pandemic. Many of the children eligible for free school meals are in two parent households.

But - hey - let nothing get in the way of a good narrow-minded, bigoted rant!

Was his mother a widow?

Lucca Tue 16-Jun-20 09:05:19

Anniebach. I don’t think so, but why ?

The situation is what it is.

Quizqueen Rather than deny poor children food and denigrate single mothers like Marcus Rashford’s, who do their best under difficult circumstances, try to understand that by supporting such families we can change society.

Anniebach Tue 16-Jun-20 09:13:15

She had five children and if widowed would have had a husband when she had the children ,

Lucca Tue 16-Jun-20 09:18:04

Please can somebody find a reliable source which tells us (not that it is really relevant to the good work he is doing ) if his mother was single widowed married etc I’ll look now....

MaizieD Tue 16-Jun-20 09:18:49

Absolutely failing to see the significance of his mother's marital status.

What is more important is that she has clearly given him a good grounding in how to be a lovely caring and unselfish individual.

Lucca Tue 16-Jun-20 09:20:51

This is all I could find

Parents:
Father: Robert Rashford
Mother: Melanie Rashford
Siblings:
Brothers: Dane Rashford, Dwaine Maynard
Sisters: Chantelle Rashford, Claire Rashford

Lucca Tue 16-Jun-20 09:22:25

Maizie. Agree.
Also fail to see the need to let children starve because their parents may have made mistakes or had bad luck

Furret Tue 16-Jun-20 09:24:43

MaisieD if she is widowed she will gain more sympathy, understanding and respect than has her husband left her as a single mother.

Reading between the lines that’s what this implies ...

Rosalyn69 Tue 16-Jun-20 09:39:31

No child should go hungry.
No one should be homeless.

missymazda Tue 16-Jun-20 09:40:44

Well said,I’d rather my taxes ended up in the hands of a few undeserving than let the many go without the basics of life.

MaizieD Tue 16-Jun-20 09:43:21

Indeed, Furret. I could feel the hand of white protestant morality hovering over the keyboard...

Lovely sentiments, Rosalyn69 but unfortunately people keep voting for the party which doesn't really care at all about hunger and homelessness.

Furret Tue 16-Jun-20 09:44:47

Maisie at least we can agree on this one!

Furret Tue 16-Jun-20 09:45:52

‘ Indeed, Furret. I could feel the hand of white protestant morality hovering over the keyboard’

Beautifully put.

Anniebach Tue 16-Jun-20 09:47:44

Best not to try to ‘read between the lines’ Furret your wrong
