Why aren't we proud anymore?

I very rarely post on political threads as quite honestly they often just go nowhere but I have to ask where our proud has gone.

I lived in Europe for nearly 20 years and realised that we are the only nation which is not proud of our country. We constantly criticise and put ourselves down. This leads us open to the same from other nations. You would never hear a Dutchman, German, Frenchman, I could go on, running their country down like we do.

There are many threads on here about how the government have done everything wrong etc but is there one praising our scientists, doctors for discovering a simple drug which my cut Covid deaths by a third. At last we have something of which we should be proud so lets celebrate for once and stop bringing our once proud nation down.

Please do not say it is due to the left, right or even middle politics. This has been going on some time I moved to Europe in 1977 and it was apparent then.

My grandson had "Dex" (Dexamethasone) three years ago in ICU to treat very serious breathing problem/infection.
It wasn't a new drug even then.

Just saying...

haha growstuff.
I must admit I wondered what the ‘fantastic breakthrough’ was with using steroids to treat inflammation.
Haven’t we been doing that for years?

Kandinsky Fri 19-Jun-20 08:25:09

If you fly the England flag here you’re immediately thought of as racist.
Doesn’t seem to apply in Wales or Scotland - they fly their flags with pride.
It’s very weird.

What Covid drug breakthrough? Some other countries have been using it for a while? Well done to the UK for finally catching up.

I so agree with original post. We are all responsible for our own actions, but it's easy to blame the government for everything. That other people pick up the pueces for others reckless of bad decisions. I am fed up with the blame culture, everyone's a victim, life throws most of us a bad deal but we get on with it. If you are suffered the loss of a partner and you gave children or have real health issues, of course you need help. We should not be blaming the government for bad life choices we made. I cannot for example, understand why any some women when they change partners, have a child, then moan on about his hard it it us to manage when they are left without a partner, most of us have one or two we can just about afford.
I said to my friends how wonderful it was that the breakthrough in the Covid drug was and why wasn't that a cause for major celebration, but no, it's easier to knock everything. Stop whinging and be responsible for your life. I am proud of my country but we have become too soft afraid to say no to the daftest causes.

Callistemon My MP has a note on her website stating that she will not respond to anybody who isn't a constituent. There's a request for an address when contacting her. Presumably this can be checked against the electoral role. There is no reference to forwarding anything, just that she won't respond.

In fact, she rarely responds to anybody in the constituency. She doesn't live here and seems unaware of local issues. People who have received replies have been sent standard, generic letters. The only time that she ever responds is when there's an opportunity for a photo in the local press. She doesn't hold local surgeries, so anybody "lucky" enough to be granted an interview has to travel to Westminster. She's a junior minister and currently has been given an important brief, but she'll only do what's needed to tick a couple of boxes. No change will happen, I can guarantee that.

She doesn't need to do anything. This constituency has a massive Conservative majority and I can't see that changing.

animoosh thanks for putting me right.
My GC live in VA though & I think they do at their school. At 8 & 10 years old I think they probably don’t have a choice.

I think the lack of pride that appears to be prevalent has an awful lot to do with the sense of disillusionment there is in people who no longer, if ever, command respect.
Throughout this dreadful pandemic, the government and Johnson in particular, has lied, misrepresented the facts, covered up and generally been grossly incompetent. I am not proud of my government. The outdated entity that is the royal family is riddled with lies, deceit and shameful behaviour. I am not proud of the royal family.
I am proud of my children, Marcus Rashford's Mum will be proud of him,I am proud to join in clapping for all the brilliant people of all nationalities in this country who continue to work their flipping socks off doing their jobs.
Thanks for the opportunity to rant

Mollygo I'm still awaiting a reply from Ed Miliband when he was Minister for the Environment. You could have a long wait.

If you write to your MP then he or she, should ask the appropriate Minister or Shadow Minister etc for answers and then write back to you.

My MP just emailed me to ask if I'm getting online shopping slots.

Dinahmo Thu 18-Jun-20 23:49:59

Jabberwok Apologies - I pbviously hit the wrrong line when replying to Mollygo. I wasn't intending to respond to you.

animoosh1 Thu 18-Jun-20 23:48:49

"jane"
pledging the flag is not a requirement /not a law
during vietnam i did not stand or pledge
i did not agree with the war/or other aspects of the pledge of allegiance/we could actually protest back then
as for the present situation many many of us do not
want him

Dinahmo Thu 18-Jun-20 23:48:36

Jabberwok

Oh yes! Didn't they look fabulous?! ????

Mollygo The role of the leader of the opposition is to question the govt. MPs don't (as growstuff said) answer questions from non constituents. Think about it. Why should they? No doubt they receive emails from thousands of Mollygos, most of whom are likely to be answering different questions.

Thanks, Lemon. I've just spotted the word Quote. I've been wondering how you did it.

Should've gone to Specsavers. grin

I still quite like the old italics thingy though.

MissAdventure Thu 18-Jun-20 23:24:13

Well, that's something new I've learnt. (Learned?) I never know these days.

lemongrove Thu 18-Jun-20 23:12:43

??

MissAdventure Thu 18-Jun-20 23:09:27

lemongrove

When you want to reply to somebody’s post click on or touch id on ipad, the word ‘quote’ which is next to add comment/report/ private message/ quote
And then type your own message and it appears ( the quote) before your own message and in a box.
I have been asking for a quote facility for years, so am pleased it’s now here.It makes it crystal clear what (and who) you are replying to.Not on this thread so far though, obviously.?

Testing, testing

lemongrove Thu 18-Jun-20 23:08:45

It saves typing things in italics!

Happysexagenarian There are lots of things I don't like about the United States, but their custom of pledging allegiance to the flag in their schools has always struck me as a good way to instill a sense of national unity and pride from an early age

Really? Even when their President is self-evidently unfit for office?
It actually distresses me that my American grandchildren are forced to mindlessly follow this act of obeisance.

growstuff Thu 18-Jun-20 20:33:54

MPs don't usually answer question from people who aren't constituents. Mine doesn't even respond to any questions, enquiries or problems from her constituents. angry

Mollygo Thu 18-Jun-20 19:34:45

Lisbethann55 it’s so true about media and as you say, the BBC.
The point about all parties being part of the government is also true-and they all have their ways of telling what happened. Unfortunately, none of them can be relied on to tell it exactly how it is, but only how it will make them look better.
I didn’t support this government at the start and not much has changed, but I don’t think others would have been much better.
I’m still waiting to hear Mr Starmer’s response to a raft of questions I sent him, asking what he would do (not would have done). If they ever come through I’ll publish questions AND answers on here. My only stipulation to him was that he must give the responses before BJ did, not wait till the government had been asked and had answered then say how he would have done it better.

Calendargirl

Well, I felt proud just now watching the News and seeing the fly past by the Red Arrows and their French counterpart.

They flew over here on their way back to Oxford - fabulous ??

I am proud of our country with the NHS, our carers, fire service, ambulance and police along with our sense of humour but I am not in the least bit proud of our present government.
