Is this a humiliation for Glasgow? ?

Strikes by binmen, piles of rubbish (and rats) in the streets, road-blocking protests and hotel rooms priced at £1,400 a night set to cast shadow over UN Climate Change Conference which starts on 31 October. Maybe it’s a ‘trick’ for Halloween ?

I know Alegriasbut it’s that bad. ?

No dear, its really not.

Why 'a humiliation' for Glasgow? I just don't get that. Surely, an embarrassment for our (so called) 'leaders'.

Urmstongran Thu 21-Oct-21 10:42:31

It seems that the fleets of electric cars have no charging points so will be using diesel generators!

Elegran Thu 21-Oct-21 10:43:02

So with 30,000 extra people suddenly arriving all at once and expecting all the stops pulled out for them, where could it be located that wouldn't be congested, over-booked and full of disgruntled locals? Edinburgh? London? Nether Littletown with the addition of several square miles of temporary Portakabins?

Suggestions on a postcard to the organisers toute suite.

While I'm here. Road blocking has been happening in London frequently, and most recently the whole M25 has been closed by anti-vaxxers, rats exist in everywhere, and no-one is on strike as yet. For accomodation, at an Olympics they build a whole village to put up the attendees, and for COP many of the visitors are VIPs needing protection, we don't usually have that sort of cover for our own policians here, far less other peoples. (The First Minister lives at home in a regular housing estate, the Official Residence is only marked by one polis at the door, it's on a bus route in Edinburgh and you can park across the road when going shopping. It's not exactly the White House.)

I wouldn't let yourself get irritated by this thread, Glasweegran. There's a great big wooden spoon being wielded...

I think I’d be pre-judging if I lived there Glasweegran just looking at the rubbish piling in the streets. And thinking of rats. I wonder if NS can get the bin drivers back to work next week?

Urmstongran Thu 21-Oct-21 10:45:44

My hands are empty. And don’t say my head is too!

using diesel generators....

...converted to run on used cooking oil.

Strangely enough, electricity doesn't appear out of thin air, even in Scotland.

Gosh, I hope not. I wouldn't want the national government meddling in local authority matters.

?? (Couldn't find a wooden spoon emoji, but this is close.)

But ... A cruise ship arrives to help deal with accommodation problems at a summit to promote clean energy - you couldn’t make it up.

Marydoll Thu 21-Oct-21 10:50:05

Technically, it is Glasgow City Council, who would negotiating with the union to get the binmen not to strike.
Thank goodness my DH is long retired, as he would have been heavily involved in negotiations!

Alegrias1 Thu 21-Oct-21 10:50:07

You thinking this is a summit to promote clean energy....you couldn't make it up. grin

Maybe they should all stay in tents? With open fires to cook on? Oh no, air pollution....

Elegran Thu 21-Oct-21 10:51:59

How about sending all the bigwigs to Southend? It has just been granted city status and has lots of accommodation in caravan parks and holiday lets, most probably empty at this time of year.

Elegran Thu 21-Oct-21 10:57:14

Could you post a note of the source for all the detail, Urmstonegran? I'd be interested in which journalist/newspaper/lobbyist the raw material has been filtered through.

No caravan parks in Southend-on-Sea, has got two very nice hotels.
Unfortunately the City of Southend is in mourning for Sir David Amess who was brutally murdered less than a week ago whilst carrying out his duty meeting constituents.

Elegran no idea what you were thinking in this post (if you were thinking at all)

The Urmiston Express and Courier

Urmstongran Thu 21-Oct-21 11:11:23

Well it wasn’t the Scotsman or the Herald! ???????

Granniesunite Thu 21-Oct-21 11:12:48

Tents on Glasgow green perhaps? Coorie in folks and watch. You might get a surprise.

Elegran Thu 21-Oct-21 11:12:52

"The UK is running its Cop26 presidency from within the Cabinet Office, under the leadership of the former business secretary Alok Sharma, who is the Cop26 president, and the businessman Nigel Topping who was appointed the government’s high-level climate action champion last year. "
rdian.com/environment/2021/ so any humiliation has been caused by Westminster.

Actually, it was the Scotsman.

Not a good idea. It's so close to the river, it could be overrun with the aforementioned rats ??????? ?

Granniesunite Thu 21-Oct-21 11:20:29

Pure dead brilliant marydoll

Elegran Thu 21-Oct-21 11:30:30

Perhaps Westminster could advise? They are so good at everything, surely they must have succeeded in getting rid of every last one of their rats, removing every scrap of rubbish from their streets, etc etc.

Do I hear derisive laughter?
