Is there a market for either here in the UK? I know in Spain fur is often proudly worn in winter and the supermarkets stock foie gras but I haven’t seen either in Wales this century!

Sadly, I have seen foie gras on menus when we have visited restaurants here in the UK.

So sorry to read this, both are appalling practices.

Shameful. Yes, foie gras is definitely to be seen on menus and probably a place such as F&M would sell it. Disgraceful that JRM would defend it, however why am I not surprised?

There are no EU regulations against these.
I suppose if we want to export to the EU and keep close trade relations we can't start banning some of the products of their dubious practices.

I did hope we might, there have to be some positive outcomes of Brexit and animal welfare standards in EU countries are generally woeful.

I’ve never been tempted by foie gras but did wear a lovely coney (rabbit) gilet in the 80s. I’ve always eaten rabbit so didn’t feel guilty about that on the possibly faulty premise that none of the poor animal was wasted!

A bit like the Spanish who eat all of the ? apart from the oink!

You can buy foie gras here which hasn't been force fed. I'm sure Waitrose sell it with an animal welfare guarantee. The practice used to turn my stomach in France when we drove past the fields of geese and ducks.

17 million mink destroyed because of COVID! And many of the pelts had apparently been destined for China.

TBH I’d thought the huge factory-farming industry of pigs in Denmark was bad enough. It’s an awful long time since I’ve bought any Danish bacon. Or Lurpak, come to that.

I've been campaigning against these monstrosities since my school days in the 1970s. Compassion in World Farming has been all over this since the 1960s and and Peta have been relentless on these issues for 40 years now.

From what I read here posters are outraged at all aspects of the trade wherever it occurs in the World. The difference is that we as individuals have no route to call on the French government to act. We have to campaign for change through our own government who, on this occasion, are not doing the right thing buy animals suffering in the EU and beyond.

When we had a voice in the EU, with MEPs acting as part of the decision making process in Europe, then we could campaign via our own MEP. Not now - that avenue has been closed for us.

Just the one route now, via Johnson's government.

It makes me so sad that a poster could see the subject of this thread and then reduce the discussion of this emotive and important subject to one word - 'clickbait'.

I'm not sure it was generally known, though. The EU is always held up as having high standards but in fact, it is pretty disgraceful compared to the UK.

I must confess that, until I read that minks had escaped from farms in Denmark during Covid, I had no idea that this abominable practice was carried on in an EU country.

I knew about foie gras produced in France, of course, but have never touched it even when I was there, although the family I was with used to serve horsemeat (which I refused).

I was a bit surprised to see how many women in Prague wore fur coats in the winter.

And the way agricultural workers are treated in Spain is disgraceful too.

All those years as an EU member and we never managed to improve their standards to those of the UK!
