Sir Anthony Gormley whose mother was German has just applied to become a German citizen and of course an EU citizen. He tells the truth about brexit. It is time more public figures told the truth about this self afflicted disaster.

1st one - Brexit voters describe themselves as middle class, educated but dissatisfied with life. Relevant phrase – “describe themselves”. Not “are”.
2nd one – four years old and behind a paywall
3rd one – review of what other people think, one of the people being reviewed is a writer for the Conservative Home
4th – same comments as number 1
5th – five year old article from Conservative Home
6th – five year old article arguing against a position that as far as I know, nobody has adopted.
7th – article from a priori Brexit supporting website.

So no, not changed my mind. Got anything else?

Brexit has exacerbated the UK’s labour shortages over the past year, with industries most reliant on freedom of movement hit hard, according to a report led by academics from Oxford university.

The research found that in parts of the economy such as hospitality and corporate support services there had been large declines in the number of EU workers, a substantial rise in vacancies and few opportunities for employers to recruit from non-EU countries.

The academics found no evidence that employers had responded by raising wages to attract UK-born workers to fill the roles previously occupied by people born in the bloc.

Tonight on Eddie Mair's programme on LBC a caller called Lee who rang in at around 5pm told us how he was the boss of a company which dealt in exporting high quality frozen fish - lobster, langoustines etc. His company which employs around 1000 people has been in business for forty years.

They have been clobbered by the nonsense of brexit which has hugely increased the beaurocracy of exporting to the EU.

They are now faced with an utterly horrendous increase in energy prices in the UK due to lack of government action to protect businesses from the greedy energy suppliers.

He has discovered that the government in The Netherlands are capping energy price rises at a modest percentage (a tiny fraction of our prices) and so he has made the difficult decision to relocate to Rotterdam, closing down his UK business and making around 1000 employees redundant.

The combination of brexit and the unwillingness of the UK government to protect us from the greed of the energy companies has destroyed this business.

Since Britons voted in 2016 to leave the E.U., the country’s per capita income has grown by 3.8 percent in real terms, compared with 8.5 percent growth in the E.U., according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Sunak has just said that a brexit benefit that will come into force next year will be ( drum roll) cheaper beer. Hurrah!

But, but - I don't drink beer!

Liz Truss is being totally delusional about this. This is happening in direct connection with the threat to the NI protocol, and is entirely the fault and responsibility of the Governement.

From The Times:

British scientists have been unable to access programmes such as Horizon, the £80 billion European scientific research budget. The EU has also excluded the UK from Copernicus, the bloc’s satellite programme, and Euratom, its nuclear research facility.

Under the terms of the UK-EU trade and co-operation agreement, the UK became an associate member of Horizon, Euratom and Copernicus in a £15 billion deal.

Truss, who is running to be Conservative Party leader, accused Brussels of trying to “politicise” the trade agreement amid a separate row over the terms of the Northern Ireland protocol. “The EU is in clear breach of our agreement, repeatedly seeking to politicise vital scientific co-operation by refusing to finalise access to these important programmes. We cannot allow this to continue,” she said.

If the UK threatens to not abide by the agreed Deal, of course the EU is not going to give access to such programmes.

We had a good system going employing care and health workers from just across the channel.

Now the fools are trawling the world at huge expense to try and recruit sufficient care and health staff because of the crises we are in.

Independent is reporting that Brexit has inflated the price of everything by 6%.

Benefits of Brexit!'

Tory peer demands bankers' bonus cap scrapped to attract investors. Lord Spencer has called on the UK Government to seize the full "financial benefits" by scrapping the cap on bankers' bonuses.

An average bonus of £596,000 was handed out to top-performing investment bankers at HSBC in January amid some of the largest payouts since the 2008 financial crash, according to This Is Money.

On Thursday, Downing Steet confirmed the Government is not planning to put restrictions on dividends or bonuses for companies that receive state support under Prime Minister Liz Truss's newly unveiled energy plans.

The Prime Minister's official spokesman said: "We are not introducing any further regulations or measures in that area on these companies."

Brexit a.easy was about more freedom and profits for the City, it hasn’t quite worked out as planned so more help is being given.
Truss is controlled by the ERG so nothing is going to change.

Imagine voting "leave" in 2016, having been told EU was source of this country's woes & leaving would let government improve your life, now to find one of only "Brexit benefits" = scrapping cap on City banker bonuses, as millions live in poverty with millions more in fear of it.

“The number of UK businesses exporting goods to the EU fell 33 per cent to 18,357 in 2021, from 27,321 in 2020, according to data from HMRC.
Discussing the figures with City A.M., Michelle Dale, a senior manager at accountancy firm UHY Hacker Young, pointed out the fall is due to the extra red tape UK businesses must now comply with when exporting to the EU.”
“Businesses are not getting enough support from the Government to navigate the post-Brexit trading minefield,” she said.

The Brexit liars were traitors who deliberately damaged our country.

I hope that at some time in the future they will be brought to account for their treachery.

Fleurpepper Fri 16-Sep-22 20:07:37

Today the Pound has dropped to the lowest ever against some currencies. It should be good for exports- but exporters can't export due to Brexit difficulties and massive extra cost. A huge own goal!

Of course, everything we need to import will cost massively more. Medicines, essential chemicals (as for water purification), energy, vaccines, and so much more, including many foods and not 'just' luxury ones.

Treachery indeed.

WWM2 - My OH was commenting earlier today that amongst all the photos of the Queen shown on tv he hadn't seen one of her with the daisy hat. Well done for finding it.
