As, I understand, had always been intended. Well deserved though.

Yes, I think it was the Queen's wish. Prince Edward is the quietly working behind the scenes one and does deserve this.
So congratulations.

It was his fathers wish , they were very close.

luluaugust Fri 10-Mar-23 10:07:03

Very pleased.

Yes I have just seen this. Well deserved indeed. I understand that the late Duke of Edinburgh discussed his intention with Prince Edward and Sophie soon after their engagement. A factor I suppose in him receiving a 'lesser' title on their marriage.

Rosalyn69 Fri 10-Mar-23 10:11:40

Well deserved. Quietly understated chap.

Sparklefizz Fri 10-Mar-23 10:14:02

Well deserved. Edward and Sophie work nearly as hard as Anne, and Charles and William need all the support they can get. The Queen had 4 children to help, Charles has only 1.

I was very pleased to read this announcement. On his wedding day, it was agreed with his parents that he would take the Wessex title, but inherit the dukedom on the death of his father. Obviously the Queen was reluctant to confer it close to Prince Philip’s death, but the King does seem to have been shuffling his feet over this one. Both the new Duke and Duchess have valiantly supported both the Queen and King Charles and this is an acknowledgement of that.

I did notice, though that the wording of the notice appeared to imply that the Dukedom would not be passed on Edward’s death to his son James, though the young man is now elevated to the Earl of Wessex,

Rather like Prince Philip then - his title didn’t pass to any of his sons on death but reverted to the Crown. I wonder if Harry’s dukedom is hereditary.

I’m so pleased to see this, well deserved.

On his birthday, a nice touch.

MawtheMerrier Fri 10-Mar-23 10:33:57

Very pleased to read this.
Edward and Sophie embody the best in “working Royals” he may not be overly intellectual but he is genuine, sincere and as a Royal should, brightens their day for the people he meets.
His involvement with and commitment to the D of E Award scheme goes back a few years and this is well deserved.
Took a while? Maybe, I don’t know how long Court Mourning affects things like this, but if it’s his birthday, it saved Camilla going out to buy him more socks.

Pleased to read this.

I suppose it goes to show that you can bring the RF into disrepute and still claw your way back.
Anyone remember It's a Royal Knockout and Arden productions?
Or Sophie Wessex and the sheik?

Smileless2012 Fri 10-Mar-23 10:38:12

This is good news and recognises the work that Edward and Sophie do, the majority of which is rarely publicised.

Callistemon21 Fri 10-Mar-23 10:38:25

I'm rather confused because wasnt there a rumour (may be just on Gransnet!) that Charlotte was to be Duchess of Edinburgh?

Obviously unfounded gossip.

Good, someone needed to be made Duke of Edinburgh as the D of E Award scheme needed a titular head and Prince Philip was patron or president of hundreds of organisations. I think the Wessexes quietly get on with the job.

Yes, but isn't it good when people recognise their early mistakes and learn from them!!

If only ........

Smileless2012 Fri 10-Mar-23 10:41:44

Yes it is Callistemon and as you say If only ........

What does Lady Louise get out of it?

MawtheMerrier Fri 10-Mar-23 10:49:09

I expect she’s “well out of it” !
Seems a thoroughly nice girl, no doubt university is next on the cards for her and titles are not the best accessory for Freshers Week.

What does Lady Louise get out of it?

Nothing if she has any sense.
She's had a Saturday/holiday job and is at university.
Like any other normal young woman.

Jaberwok Fri 10-Mar-23 10:52:13

The late Queen was of course the Duchess of Edinburgh, which is perhaps why this has taken a while to execute. Anyhow whatever, and like most people I am very glad for this unassuming hard working loyal couple to have been awarded this honour. As for the past? that is exactly what it is and they have more than made up for any foolish indiscretions that happened some 20 years ago, and to bring this up is spiteful and meanspirited.

Callistemon21 Fri 10-Mar-23 10:52:42

Not say all normal young women are at university - many are working. 😀

Jaberwok Fri 10-Mar-23 10:54:50

Lady Louise can now call herself HRH Princess Louise, but it's extremely unlikely that she will. She too is an unassuming young woman leading a normal life.
