It’s a journey, not an event.
It’s only been 2 years - 11 months were tied to EU legislation.
We’ve ‘saved’ £198 BILLION not being part of the European furlough and QE packages.
I’m glad we’re out.

Most of the people I know who voted to Leave are hugely disappointed that the most hasn’t been made of this opportunity. Brexit hasn’t had a chance yet.

Bill Cash, John Redwood, Jacob Rees Mogg are amongst others at an event tonight in Westminster with the impressive Liam Halligan reporting on it.

Brexit is costing the UK £1 billion per year .

Good job we’ve saved £190+ billion then since leaving varian. The European debit relief for Covid.

Well we can’t be helping out poorer countries can we? Actually Brexit is costing us far more than we’ve saved. There have been no benefits to anyone apart from the super rich. The U.K. is the projected to be the worst performing country in the G7 with negative growth. We now have freedoms to do what exactly? Pour sewage in our waterways springs to mind .That’s good.

grandMattie Wed 01-Feb-23 05:53:04

Because of the political antipathy of the rest of Europe, but their need for our money, Brexit was necessary. We were going to be made topay, both financially and politically whatever the poll result. Verhogstadt and Barnier are toxic politicians.
We have now left, with punitive clauses. TM didn’t do us any favour with her wobbling. Whatever his faults, BoJo got us out, then was catapulted into the pandemic.
We need a strong and committed Brexit government of whatever hue, with help from all the media. No more negative, woke, snowflake scandals. Head down, bum up, and work towards a fair trading agreement.

I don’t see how brexit can possibly fail with politicians like Rees Mogg, Redwood and Cash behind it. Such intellect and dynamism. The rest of the world must be so envious of us…

MayBee70 Wed 01-Feb-23 06:13:31

….was Peter Bone at the event, too? I’m sure he must have been.

vegansrock Wed 01-Feb-23 06:17:42

Actually Brexit is costing more like £100 billion per year so all that talk of saving is rubbish Any amount of “talking down” wouldn’t change the facts . Brexit lovers “talk down”the EU all the time - it’s still the biggest and strongest trading bloc on the planet, so all the rhetoric of how it was all going to collapse without the U.K. and how “they need us more than we need them” was so much piffle. Can anyone name any one genuine benefit we have had by leaving that matches the whole list of negatives? Answer: No.

grandMattie Wed 01-Feb-23 06:20:22

We can’t change things, but surely theEU was better as a trading group than trying to be the United States of Europe?
When we joined, it was the perfect system…

I have recently written to my MP regarding changes to rules for immigration to EU countries. Those of you who travel to and from Europe will be aware of the need to have passports stamped on entry and exit. EES is due to be introduced in May, 2023 (just over three months away) but I find no mention of this new regulation when I visit the UK government site, advising on travel to France. EES entails the fingerprinting and photographing of British travellers with these records being stored for future times when they might visit. Delays at ports and airports are expected when this is implemented. This will be followed by ETIAS being implemented in November of this year.

😄😄.

Lots of Bregreters out there. The vast majority now regretting their vote, made on the back of lies and fraud.

The EU has become more secure as a result, as people are watching the U.K. flounder and becoming poorer and say “not for us”

The NY Times is this morning reporting that the EU economy will avoid a recession (unlike the U.K.) and is expected to grow this year. Some countries like Germany will not do so well as expected, but the on the whole the picture is positive.

Meanwhile the U.K. is the only major economy expected to go into recession in 2023, performing even worse than the heavily blacklisted Russia.

vegansrock Wed 01-Feb-23 06:28:27

The Russian economy , with sanctions and a war, is predicted to have better economic growth than the U.K. Wonder why?

Ashcombe Wed 01-Feb-23 06:28:34

Anyone travelling regularly to and from Europe will be aware of the need to have one's passport stamped on entry to, and exit from, any of the EU countries, causing slower queues at Immigration into and out of France, for example. Under the rules for EES, from May (or maybe later this year) each of us entering an EU country will have to be fingerprinted and photographed. From November, ETIAS will be in operation.

Good job varian mistyped - £100 billion a year

Whitewavemark2 Wed 01-Feb-23 06:47:15

Exports to the EU by U.K. business has dropped by a truly astonishing 33% during the last year.

We are the only G7 country whose economy is smaller than before covid.

Bloomberg reporting that Brexit is costing the U.K. £100 billion a year.

The OBR is estimating that both imports and exports will be 15% lower in the long run than if we’d stayed in the EU.

While all these costs have been imposed on British businesses trying to export to the EU, the Government has repeatedly delayed implementing full checks on goods coming in from the EU because it is afraid of the consequences in the form of shortages and delays.

vegansrock Wed 01-Feb-23 06:49:06

We were told by the leave campaign that we would leave the EU but remain within the single market and have a Norway type agreement - they lied about that too.

vegansrock Wed 01-Feb-23 06:52:37

In order to “ move on” and “ get behind” Brexit, Leavers have first got to admit that there are downsides to Brexit and not pretend everything is fantastic for the U.K. Only then will we be able to move forward and try to mitigate the problems.

I admire your optimism Urms, but I doubt that it will anytime soon.
The country is in absolute blooming chaos.

And that was New Labour’s anthem. Roll on the GE

(I loved your comment Molly 😁)

All I can say is that I am absolutely disheartened by the whole Brexit experiment. I cannot think of a single advantage to our leaving but a whole list of disadvantages.

VioletSky Wed 01-Feb-23 07:21:18

It is not as if ordinary people are sabotaging brexit by disagreeing with it

What are we supposed to do exactly? Life gets harder and harder lately

Thank you, Mamie. My MP appears to “know nothing” but then I normally live in Torquay …… home of the original Manuel.!!
