@TpotAtheist: For atheists everything in the world is enough and every day is holy. Every day is an atheist holiday. It’s a day that we’re alive
―Jillette

It appealed to something deep.

I thought people could submit quotes they like— not necessarily to do with atheism or theism (that's why I put it in the philosophy forum) — any subject, just something that, as it were, hits the spot.

No idea who Jillette is, btw. Off to find out.

“Money can't buy happiness, but it can make you awfully comfortable while you're being miserable.” That's one of hers.

What an amazing woman!

Oops, must be tired, Clare Boothe Luce.

janerowena Thu 19-Mar-15 13:47:54

No, apparently it was Clare Luce Booth. Along with 'Widowhood is a fringe benefit of marriage' and A hospital is no place to be sick'.

grin It was always one of my favourite quotations, was it Oscar Wilde? He had some brilliant ones.

I think it means - be careful what you meddle in, don't delude yourself by thinking you are doing you are doing someone a favour.

I find the quote comforting.

This too shall pass.

However bad things are or however good.

The past is a different country, they do things differently there....
Particularly relevant on Gransnet during some discussions.

As for mortals, their days are like grass;
they flourish like a flower of the field;
for the wind passes over it, and it is gone,
and its place knows it no more

Love you quote Eloethan. Even posted it on my facebook) Thank you. Really is it better to watch what is going on around you

annsixty Mon 19-Jan-15 17:42:38

Thank you. It is obviously one we must put our own interpretation on. Personally I prefer sayings to be a bit easier to understand.

Eloethan Mon 19-Jan-15 16:47:52

I've always taken "no good deed goes unpunished" to be just a humorous take on "no good deed goes unrewarded".

Randomly happened to hear someone on the Radio 4 book programme the other day quote Gramsci who apparently talked about 'the pessimism of the intellect and the optimism of the will'. For some reason it struck a chord with me, I get very depressed by the state of the world and it takes willpower to be optimistic. I think I'd like to amend it to say 'optimism of the heart and will'!

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 19-Jan-15 14:14:56

Perhaps it's cynicism. ie Don't expect thanks, rather beware that the recipient of your goodness will probably 'spit in your face'. grin

annsixty Mon 19-Jan-15 14:09:04

I will show just how dense I am but I can't understand "no good deed goes unpunished" and am relying on someone to enlighten me.

Jiddu Krishnamurti: "It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society."

and on a light note:

"If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs ......
Then you obviously don't understand the situation"
(don't know who came up with this, apologies to Kipling)

Yesterday is history
Tomorrow is a mystery
Today is a gift, that is why it is called the present.

You will meet people richer than you, more intelligent than you and in a different social position than you but you will never meet anyone better than you - (my grandad)

No-one can make you feel inferior without your permission (Elenor Roosevelt - I think)

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 19-Jan-15 11:20:03

On, Something Understood, on radio 4 last night, someone said the line, "Most men live lives of quiet desperation" and followed it with the lesser known next line, "And die with their song still inside them". Made me think, that did. Along the lines of "seize the day".

It might have been Jill Tweedie in Letters from a Faint-hearted Feminist who said that the wonderful thing about being pregnant was that you could be doing nothing and still know that you were busy doing something.
