Bishop Michael Curry's Sermon

Anyone who thinks the sermon OTT or too long have never been to a black church.

Pity colour has to be brought into this.

One doesn’t need to go into any other church, renewal days in the Anglican Church are great. Just a time and place for everything

It wasn't a comment about colour - just to say many black commenters said this was typical of a sermon in their church - only much shorter!

Then why say ‘black church’ , there is no such thing

It was only 13 minutes not a lifetime I liked him and his words but I was willing the congregation to all call out Hallelujah and I was holding my breathe when his arms flapped around near the candles
Oh Anniebach there seems nothing you liked about the wedding or the people involved why did you watch ? So what ! she’s divorced can’t she love a second time round

That style of preaching is known as Evangelism, roughly translated as giving it your all when ever , where ever the opportunity arises. That was obviously a God given opportunity way to good to pass up & reign in.

BlueBelle, please reads posts, all I have said was talking of first love when one was a divorcee was tactless , a poor choice of words, I doubt many marry their first love and I doubt people enter a loveless marriage , not counting marrying for money ?. I would say the same if she had been a widow. He got hysterical and he’s a bishop, when I trained to be a lay preacher it was stressed one must consider every word . I expected a bishop to be able to give an address without such a clanger . Neither was talking of poverty suitable. Seems his arm flapping and hysteria attracted those who didn’t really care what he said, one does not talk of children being hungry at a marriage service. Well he does ?

There are plenty of black churches - theres over 200 in my part of London, mainly African.

Good grief, slavery? Apartheid ended quite a few years ago. There are churches where the majority of worshippers are black.

Yes and they call themselves black churches. Theres quite a few Nigerian ones near here. The style of preaching / worship is very different from traditional English churches - the services go on for hours.

I know and people of all races and colours are welcome . I am speaking of Welsh and English Churches through out Wales and England

It doesn't mean only black people are welcome - not at all, but for cultural and historical reasons there are clearly identifiable church groups which call themselves "black churches'. Bishop Curry's style of sermon would be recognisable in those institutions.

It was recognisable to me . If they call themselves black churches they are not Christian Churches , Christians do not ‘see colour’ or certaintly shouldn’t see colour

Agree with Annie not for me .
Felt that he was preaching at us, almost shouting.
It was far too long.
I had the feeling that it was his 15 mins (felt a lot longer) of fame and an Oscar beckoned.

The facial expressions and looks amongst the congregation was to say the very least interesting.

Zara Tindall face was a classic.

Cherrytree, I did find poor Zara’s face amusing, she looked stunned , and the poor queen , in her own Chapel . Was it really only 15 minutes ?

Well they call themselves Christian, they have names like “Evangelical Church of God” and are always very busy on a Sunday despite the services being about 3 hours long. Theres one in an old cinema near me where everyone really does dress up in their “Sunday best”.

I'm another one who thought he went on for far too long and that 'we' were being preached at. Each to their own but I lost the plot and couldn't wait for him to finish. We were amused by the expressions and supressed laughter from some of the Royals though.

Later on there was a report from LA from people who had been watching at 4am. Apparently, after the ceremony, somebody remarked, 'This wedding is going to change the world!'

Now, that really did make me laugh.

Bishop Curry is not an evangelical pastor, as some posters seem to assume. According to the BBC web site:

"The Most Reverend Michael Curry became the first black presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church - like the Church of England, part of the Anglican Communion - when he was appointed in 2015."

He is well known for taking on social issues and is controversial in the States for allowing the marriage of same-sex couples. I saw nothing wrong with his preaching about the power of love and issues like poverty which Meghan is know to take an interest in.

There was more than one person in the Chapel, he was puffed up with self importance , a wind bag .

Shame you thought that as he was giving a Christian message about the importance of love.
