Hi all,

As you will have noticed, we have changed the way that local works, and as part of this local usernames will be disappearing shortly.

But...coming very soon there will be the chance for you to add an additional username that you can use to post on sensitive threads or anywhere else that you would prefer not to use your regular username. This will be launched shortly so watch out for more details on how it all works.

It is the 'OR ANYWHERE ELSE' that concerns me.

1). So this system will allow posters to post on ' a ' thread using 'both' their User Names full stop! ?

2). So this system will allow a poster who holds two User Names the ability to post on numerous threads using 'both' their User Names simply because they can as there is no restriction or classification in place as to where, when it will be permitted?

3). What or who will define a Sensitive Thread ? Will we the contributing posters be alerted to what is being deemed as a Sensitive Thread ?

4). How will we as contributing posters know if and when we are engaging with one or more posters taking advantage of having the ability to post using 'both' User Names? That is a distinct possibility and I believe will most certainly happen.

I am asking myself what is the point in restricting it to 2 User Names? The whole purpose of the Forum for me was to interact in GOOD FAITH and in a TRUST WORTHY MANNER with other contributors getting to understand other posters quirks, characteristics but now I will be thinking I will simply be posting back and forth with with the same poster going under two pseudonyms.

It's obviously a personal view and I probably will be out on a limb on this one but the bad points do not outweigh the good and I am making my opinion known I have reservations .

I was just about to make a similar comment POGS
We need to have a dedicated sensitive thread part of GN surely if this dual name thing is to work.
Otherwise you will have the possibility of sock puppets.

MissAdventure Wed 21-Feb-18 15:23:23

I'm afraid I had to post my sensitive threads months ago.
All the issues that I was wary of asking for advice on, in case it 'outed' me have been done.

BlueBelle Wed 21-Feb-18 15:28:28

blimey I can’t remember one user name let alone two, totally confusing So you can be having a deep conversation with someone who suddenly turns into someone else ..... wonderful This site gets better by the day ?

Amazing the simply things we all asked for to be changed like an edit button and this complex one is given to us, blooming amazing

LaraGransnet (GNHQ) Wed 21-Feb-18 17:14:00

We did a poll some time ago and most users wanted the ability to change their usernames for anonymity. While we don't want to open the site to sock puppeting, we thought this was the best compromise - limiting the number of username changes. We'd hope that most people will still use a 'main username' and the second one is only meant to be used as a back-up for those times when you want to post anonymously. We'll keep an eye and if anyone is abusing this, we'll take steps.

Jane10 Wed 21-Feb-18 17:24:01

In the meantime how about that edit button?!

LaraGransnet (GNHQ) Wed 21-Feb-18 17:29:59

Sorry Jane10. No plans for an edit button. It opens up a whole can of worns. Best just to correct yourself in following post.

BlueBelle Wed 21-Feb-18 18:00:38

Not as many worms as somebody changing their name when they feel like it I think Most people if I remember correctly wanted a private space away from fb, daily fail or twitter for their sensitive conversations
I remember the poll and there were lots of people against it

Very stubborn about the edit button which seems to be no problem on most other forums in fact this is the only one I ve ever been on that doesn’t allow it even for five minutes

NotTooOld Wed 21-Feb-18 18:38:24

I voted for being able to change my user name but only because I can think of something nicer than NotTooOld. I don't want to keep two user names. How confusing.

Can we have a LIKE button, please?

maryeliza54 Wed 21-Feb-18 19:07:28

BB you are misremembering - the poll was about 80% in favour I believe.

maryeliza54 Wed 21-Feb-18 19:16:44

It’s quite easy to recognise a sensitive thread IMO. People will have the choice to use their usual name or their second one. What’s wrong with that? No one has to have a second name - if you don’t want to, don’t. As for sock puppets - really? You think it’ll be a common problem? Really? If you suspect it, report it anyway. A huge majority voted for it ( far more than the Referendum) but we do seem to have some sore losers ?

BlueBelle Wed 21-Feb-18 19:17:02

I m remembering the many comments I didn’t look at the poll just followed the comments, of course it depends how many people voted if 2000 use gransnet and 200 voted with 80% in favour wouldn’t mean much really Bit like Brexit ( I made up the figures before I get corrected)

I think I seem to remember most people wanted a private area/room and that was never even considered
I can’t see where changing your name would help annonimity as it doesn’t matter what name you use if your story is shared on FB Twitter or Daily Fail it can be recognised even if you call yourself ten different names it’s the story not the name I really don’t understand the thinking behind it at all

maryeliza54 Wed 21-Feb-18 19:27:26

But the FB/Twitter issue is predicated on the fact that GN is a business - not a cosy club. And why would they want a private area that the media couldn’t mine? They are a business and want advertising so all publicity is welcome - especially in rags like the DM.

Jane10 Thu 22-Feb-18 11:31:33

How is it that every other forum I'm on has an edit button? Somehow its just a convenience rather than a can of worm opening device?

jusnoneed Thu 22-Feb-18 11:56:53

I agree an edit or delete button would be far more useful, as they have on every other forum/group I use.

I really don't see the need for having two usernames, but it would be good idea to allow people to change their existing name if they wanted too.

OurKid1 Thu 22-Feb-18 12:04:55

Oh dear ... I have enough trouble remembering the one I do have, plus passwords etc .... Good idea though, especially when asking advice on personal issues.

OurKid1 Thu 22-Feb-18 12:05:57

A Like button would be very useful - the equivalent of nodding in agreement in the real world.

humptydumpty Thu 22-Feb-18 12:11:30

As many posters above, I like the idea of using a different username for sensitive threads - but only if there is a designated area for these which cannot be mined by the media.

I appreciate that GN is a business, but I do feel that the majority of threads would still be in the public area and therefore open to the media.

mcem Thu 22-Feb-18 12:12:19

I just can't see the logic. One poll seems to be in favour of a second name and that can be agreed.
Overwhelming numbers of posters ask for edit/like buttons but that's a no-no.
Pleas for a more private area for sensitive issues - another refusal.
Real dislike of the ever-closer relationship with FB - too bad - it suits the business.
Significant opposition to the changes to the site's format - 'We note the comments but the changes are happening, like it or lump it'!
Why elicit opinions and ignore them but impose arbitrary decisions, however unpopular?

humptydumpty Thu 22-Feb-18 14:23:05

Then they can say 'we had a consultation'...

maryeliza54 Thu 22-Feb-18 14:24:10

An edit button that gave you a very very brief window would be great - but as I tell myself many times, I should use the preview button. As for a like button - can’t you see how that could be abused. Just post ‘I agrre’ or ‘Good post’ - that’s hardly asking much is it? A like button is a bit lazy IMO. As for everything else just breathe and repeat ‘GN is a business they are not my friend’

maryeliza54 Thu 22-Feb-18 14:25:10

Wh6 should they even consult?
